Drain and refill the DEF/AdBlue tank on a Jaguar XE - HOW TO!

Күн бұрынWelcome back! In today's how to I will show you how to drain and refill DEF/AdBlue tank on a Jaguar XE. as well as take the DEF injector off and giving it a clean!
We have had a couple of DEF related issues since we have picked up our jaguar and i'm hoping this may help others in the future!
The early XE's in particular where extremely strict when it came to the quality of AdBlue used. there are ECU updates and parameters changed at the dealer which solve these issues! However, taking these steps may also help to remove such error messages listed below.
This may help if you have accidentally put the incorrect specification of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF)
in to a jaguar/land-rover. this will cause errors such as "incorrect DEF quality detected" on the dash.
by removing the DEF injector and cleaning it this may also help with the "DEF Dosing malfunction".
The handbook states that AdBlue fluid should meet ISO standard 22241-1

Boys and girls I had to comment on here....I had this problem, I started with the first error and it then turned into a malfunction. Car isn't in warranty so Jag doesn't care and will charge the world! was all booked in ready to pay £215 just for the pleasure of plugging in a computer before they would tell me the issue. I was losing faith until the night before I saw this video.. All I will say is this mate you just saved me a crap load of money nearly £1000 I am presuming. It is really as simple as on the video and took 3 hours in total to do all the work carefully. The injector part is the key as mine was caked. also do check around the seal of the injector as could be blocked also. Once it was all back together I took it for a long hours journey about 55 miles but the message was still there. few hours later on the return trip home knowing that I was calling Jaguar assist in the morning to come and software update I looked at the dash and the warning disappered. My Friend was couldn't believe that you have saved me from those stealer (dealers) and I can use that money saved on good things for my kids. Trust this video guys and dolls and take the time and it works! some may need the update and some may not but all I can say chap is thanks for the post and you're the b*@locks!! in the end it cost me £7.18 for 2 bottles from Jaguar. only use their stuff and not like I did from elsewhere as you will get this problem no doubt. My car was a Jaguar XE 65 plate The good guys 1 Jaguar Thieves 0 😂😂😂😂

Haha we had same issue went back to dealership three times 1 time per month and all they did was refill the adblue each time, 8000 miles it should last one tank of adblue on the higher hp 2.0 diesel xe, it didnt go through any of their heads but its free money for them each time, and then finally on this visit they figure out theres a issue, i looked online and within 5 minutes found nox sensor, they found the nox sensor was 100 percent dead, but the last 3 diagnostics the part was fine, how in space of 4 weeks does a nox sensor go from 0 percent fault to 100 percent dead ill never know, but they wanted 880 for that and 192 for the diagnostics they did, same price they charged for the last 3 diagnostics where they didnt solve the issue, the dealers are very big stealers, im glad i found this video

@@MrWaheedulHaque How did you find out the NOx sensor is dead. I have this exact issue on the video. And I’m convinced it’s my NOx sensor but have no way of finding out. Please help.

After doing loads of research on the adblue systems it seems the route cause of the DEF incorrect quality is the second NoX sensor. The first NoX sensor reads the level of NoX after the turbo then the second NoX sensor reads the level of NoX present after the adblue treatment. The reason we get the incorrect DEF message is the second NoX sensor isn’t reading correctly thinking the adblue isn’t doing its job. After the 3rd time the message came up on the dash after doing what I done in the video followed by an update at the dealer (which just accepts a higher value of NoX at the second sensor) and cleaning the NoX sensor I eventually got an actual error code for the second NoX sensor. It seems as though this is extremely common across all vehicle fitted with this system (Mercedes, VAG etc) not just jag’s. I have now had the adblue system deleted with a remap. Which cost the same as buying a NoX sensor so was a no brained for me. No more having to buy adblue etc too. Hope this helps Jason

@@TrackAndBeyond Jason, that’s amazing info, you really know your stuff. I was just about to write you a message asking a few questions and running you through quickly what I’ve done so far and what my problems are. (If you soundly mind spending a bit of time with me I’d really appreciate it.) So I initially got the DEF quality message. 😩 I drained the Adblue and cleaned the injector as per your video. I also cleared the emissions fault with a cheap OBD II reader and cleaned the NOx sensor with a de carbon spray. The dash message changed to the “DEF dosing malfunction” message. 🤬. After taking the car on a few drive cycles (I only have 200 miles remaining before no engine restarts.) The Engine management light has gone off but then no engine restarts is still there. Also, my cheap OBD II reports that the “EGR monitor bank 1” and “EGR monitor bank 2” have failed due to exceeding the MIN limit 🤷🏻♂️. So, on this information. Do you still think it could be my 2 NOx sensors? Many thinks Mike.

This was a fantastic video. I spoke to you a few days ago regarding problems. But today, with just 190 miles to “no engine restarts” remaining, the fault went away. Phew. 😅 Thanks for sharing, especially the DEF drain. I couldn’t have done it without this video.

Thank you for the video, it was really useful and provided good info. I had the "Incorrect Diesel fluid Quality Detected" error on my XF 2016 2.0D recently. I solved the issue by doing the following: 1) I topped up with 5L of Redex Adblue. I've had the car for just over 5k miles and did not top up until now and not sure when the previous owner had topped up. So, I figured 5L would be a safe amount (not risk causing an overfill) because I read somewhere that the car uses about 1L per 1000miles or even 500miles in some cases. 2) Then I checked for fault codes using an iCarsoft v2.0 device and some regarding the glow plugs circuit appeared but nothing about the DEF. I cleared all the fault codes anyway, which changed the error to "Diesel Exhaust Fluid Dosing Malfunction" with the mileage countdown still there. BTW I opted for buying the iCarsoft after doing some research as it's recommended as a really good and decent priced OBD2 scanner. 3) I took the car for a long motorway drive (about 30miles), driving 70mph on a lower gear to up the revs, then turned the car off and went shopping for a few hours, then did a few shorter trips whilst I was there including turning the car on and off a few times. I then drove the 30miles on the motorway back home and eventually the "dosing" error disappeared!!! My 'Diesel Exhaust Fluid Refill' indicator in the 'Next Service' screen is now showing 10,000miles. I believe the 5L top-up has solved the issue for me and hope that it doesn't return anytime soon! Hope this helps anyone if they get this issue and wants to try an Adblue top-up before trying to clean the DEF injector or drain and refill the DEF tank, as long as there is no risk of overfilling! Great video, helped me a lot. Got this warning on Friday, phoned the guy who’s worked on my car for years and he managed to fit me in this morning. Put it up on the ramp and took the sensor out, it was covered in crystallised adblue. Cleaned it off, hooked it up to the computer and cleared the errors. £30 versus the thousands Jaguar would have charged

Maybe I'm just a noob, but I got stuck trying to remove the "spinney little bits" at 1:51 (!?) Arch was full of muck too so had to put the wheel back on and wash my eyes out xD

@@MrNazRMed they can be a pain in the bum use a pair of pliers or a flat head and try tap them round. And yea sadly the lining can get pretty muddy 🙃🤣

You ate a Star . Quoted all sorts of rubbish by garages for the dosing malfunction error on a jag xe r sport 2016. Watched video , cleaned sensor at the bottom near the exhaust as per your vid . Took for a ride with some shell v power in the tank and after a few minutes bingo error cleared itself .Cheers for the vid ...appreciated.

So I live 70 Miles from any Jag dealers here in the US, I just filled my add blue tank with Blue Platinum, its the best I could find around where I live, the auto is a 2017 Xe and only has 20K miles, I been trying to learn the maintenance on it for myself as everything here in the US is about 1/3 more expensive than in the EU. I want to thank you for this important info. I got the same alarm and I follow your steps and able to clear the alarm. I got a alarm saying "NO engine restart in 500 kms. Bad DEF quality detected". I searched the info on web and found your video which was really helpful. First I added another container of Adblue and Filled to top. I was assuming it would go, but it was there and now i have only 100kms left. Then I performed every step of yours and drained the whole Adblue. However It was too tough for me to find the Injector you mentioned in the video which I found from the other video. I cleaned it with worm water and put it back. I fucked the 5mm screw so I went for 6mm. I put it back and cleared the alarm with Innova 3100rs OBD2 scanner which costs me $170. The status of the alarm changed to "Dosing malfunction". I put my tire back in and refill the Adblue. I took it to drive and after 28kms it cleared automatically. Such a relief for me. I want to thank you that u put your efforts by sharing the detailed video. It was tough job for me as I have only my car jacks. Thanks Ravinder Singh

Hi, @Track & Beyond, Great video and learnt some about the DEF system. I viewed the video because I have a P20B9 error on my Jag XE 2015. The scanner tells me "there is no detectable voltage in the control circuit of the reductant heater with the “A” designation". Just wondering if you knew where the heater is located so I can check the heater, injector and refill the DEF tank all in one go. Many thanks.

I believe the heats are located near the turbo although I think their are 2 of them with another further down the exhaust system. They’re little screw in prope type things

Great video! I have a GPS fault on my XE where the car thinks it’s in the wrong location. I think it’s a fairly common problem with earlier XEs - have you ever changed the shark fin aerial or removed the headliner? Thanks in advance!

Excellent video. Will the quality warning automatically reset and what options do I have if I get the error “no engine restarts possible”?

It should eventually reset after doing the flush and clean. If it doesn’t then Their could be a further issue Jaguar have an update available for the ECU. If you’ve already reached no engine restart possible then unfortunately it’s a trip to the dealer as they’re the only one that can reset it etc.

No need to drain after topping up no. This is when you have a fault with the DEF system

Hello, great video! If I have the Def quality fault code showing, after refilling and cleaning the injector, would the fault message disappear of its own accord or do I need to get removed by a dealership? Cheers Tony

Hi Toney thanks for the kind message! I have known it to reset it’s self after doing what you mention however if it doesn’t reset itself after a drive then it will have to go to a dealer. There is a software update available which alters the perimeters of the adblue system I believe. Thanks Jason

Should just be a case of unscrewing it counted clockwise, it’s a fairly big cap so get your hand round it.

Not that I have seen. Adblue seems to be the only issue I have come up against. Iv done a lot of research on the adblue system and seems as though the route cause of this issue is the NoX sensor. I love the car and still love driving it 10 months on! Hope you enjoy yours!

Yip, spot on, i cleaned the injector and drained the adblue tank, ordered 2 x large tubs of Jaguar/ Land Rover adblue, which I put in today. The fault is still on the dash, but will do as advised and take it for a long run and hopefully it will go.. I did the “Service” warning delete thing while I was at it, as Jaguar fooked that up last year on service and the warning kept coming up, that also worked a treat. Wish I knew where Mick Sloey got Jag Adblue for £7.18 tho, I was £46. 🥳😤😂🫡🇬🇧

REDEX AdBlue works in mine - great if you are a Costco user - I grab 5L when it's on offer and keep it the car for when the low light come on

Hi Sorry late tho the xe party, only owned a year, the def warning has come on saying def low. Can I just top this up or do I need to do a full drain down? And how much do I know how to put in unlike my van it has no digital gauge. Thank you

Yea if it’s low just top it up, put 3l in I believe is the standard top up. What year is your XE? I believe 2017 onwards there is an option to see the gauge for DEF.

Hey mate I had the incorrect diesel exhaust fluid warning appear and followed your steps by doing an adblue flush and topping up followed by cleaning the injector and resetting the codes with a OBD2 reader. The message changed to dosing malfunction however, i took the car for a 60 mile drive and the warning has not gone away. Would be grateful if you could advise on what the next step should be?

Sounds like unfortunately it could be your secondary NoX sponsor has failed as the readings from this sensor pick up the emissions readings after the Adblue treatment, What codes did you have on the ECU? My guess is NoX sensor was one of them. Jason

Thanks for the kind words! So the quantity depends on which model you have. The earlier version report like I have took 16l I believe and the modern ones took 8l I believe but would have to double check that Jason

Have owned it for 8 months and the yellow warning light has come on...having never owned a car with add blue I was worried that I could damage it in some way by over filling the system, if possible?

Thank you! 😀 it’s a common thing especially from where the car would have been sat on the forecourt the adblue goes bad in the tank. Iv still got mine in tubs at the garage but I think the local recycling centre would take it it’s not a harmful liquid so shouldn’t be to much of an issue of disposal Thanks Jason

Yea I had mine updated as mines an early XE there is an update available for them yea however jaguar will still try drain and refill the tank costing you a fortune

@@lostboy9313 a guy on the comments section here actually had the update done for free after doing his own adblue drain and refill! But I payed £120 I think. As far as I’m aware draining refilling and an update usually cures all adblue issues

Hi, this video has been so helpful for my 65 Jag XE. Drained the Adblue tank and refilled, and about to clean the injector this week. Quick question re the "dosing malfunction" error, will that clear itself or will I need a code reset? I had someone help me reset the "incorrect DEF" after re-filling the tank, then the "dosing" error appeared. So based on this video, am pretty certain the next thing to do is the injector clean.

Thanks for the kind worlds 😅 yea based on the dosing malfunction I would give the injector a clean but it may require the reset. They’re is also an ECU update from Jaguar for our earlier XE’s which may need to be applied. Hope this helps Jason

My friend cleaned the injector today, it wasn't clogged up but the part it connects to was totally crystalised, no Adblue would be able to get through. After about 15-20 mile journey home, switched engine off and re-started again, the error code was GONE! Thank you so much. Saved me taking it to Jaguar.

If it is an Ingenium engine which I believe it is they have had a few issues with the chain. The best thing to help prevent any issues In my opinion is to replace the oil in shorter intervals. Jaguar say every 2 years or 25,000 miles which ever comes first I suggest especially is using as a taxi is replace the oil and filter every 10k miles. It doesn’t seem to be a certain issue with them though it’s very hit and miss they have updated the chain guide and chain I believe in newer engines.

Great video. How do you know how much adblue to add to the tank? I have a 5L of adblue but i thought i was only meant to add 3L?

There’s 2 different tanks depending on the year. If you Google it there’s info on there I believe one tank (early one) is 18l and then the later version I think is 15l

In this case when you drained the tank did you only fill it with the 5L’s or did you add more?

Excellent. 6:03 are those 3 tiny holes in the adblue nozzle? I'm guessing that's what controls the spray pattern? Also wondering if you drain the DEF tank and then put a gallon of really hot water in there and start the car and let that pump through, would it break up the clog? Seems like that might dissolve the crystals and free up the flow. Or am I wrong? Anyone try this? I'm working on a Range Rover Sport 2017.

Yea spot on mate the 3 nozels will control the spray pattern. I’m not sure when the adblue pump actually operates as I don’t think it does it under idle conditions so not sure if filling the tank with hot water will work or not

Hey I need help. Few days ago the no engine restart restart message came up in amber. From amber it turned red and now my xe won’t start. I done a ad blue service(change the ad blue) and cleaned the ad blue injector. The car still won’t start. I’ve disconnected the battery a few times but no improvement. Reading online it looks like it needs a software update. Can anyone advise anything. I’m thinking about the software update, just not happy about spending the money.

Hi Lee, sadly once the engine has shut down it has to go back to the dealer to be reset so the engine will start once again. There is also software updates that correspond to the adblue issue which Jaguar would probably do at the same time. Hope that helps Jason

In theory yes however nothing’s a guarantee with this adblue system so you may have to do both

Not sure if this’ll work for everyone, but I managed to clear the fault today. I took the plunge and reached ‘0 miles left’. The big red triangle appeared saying ‘no engine restarts’. I went on the car settings and changed the date backwards 4 days and the hours back by 4 hours, after that I set the sat nav to my home address. Somewhere in there wires got crossed and the fault completely cleared. I took the car for a drive, turned it off and on again 5 times and the fault didn’t come back. I’m not in any way saying that this is how to fix it, but it worked for me

I have the error showing 512 miles count down due adblue quality. I did the steps in the video cleaning the sensor , mine was full with white stuff . Used warm water an look like new . Drove the car for 15 miles at 70mph and the error is still there . I didn’t did a adblue drain a refill. I’m left now only with 260 miles till engine won’t start. Any advice please ? Are there any other sensors left to clean ? If yes , where ? I read somewhere that Jaguar can update my car but not sure since it’s a 2015 model . Is there any odb reader that can reset the error? And if yes , it’s a permanent solution ? Please help . Thank you 🙏

Good evening! Sadly if all the above steps haven’t worked it could be the secondary NoX sensor which is located on the exhaust system itself after the adblue injector that could be clogged or sadly the more likely case of beginning to fail as they are an extremely sensitive sensor. Yes Jaguar can apply an update the earlier models like yours where more prone and the update was developed for them to begin with so defo worth having done if you can. Sadly I don’t know of any 3rd party diagnostic equipment capable of doing so as the update will be on the Jaguar server. Hope this helps Jason

@@TrackAndBeyond This morning they fix my car . Apparently that DEF injector was leaking. 149£ +VAT , Software updated 130£ + vat, refit kit and some bolts plus his work 435.91£ . This was made at a Jaguar Specialist, in York . Car is running great 👍 . Thanks for all the support and info I found here. Helped me a lot at least to understand the system .

Do you know of any updates for the xf?. I've had issues ever since I bought it in November 2019 (65 plate) my showed I've got x amount of adblue left so bought some from Halfords put about 4litres in and did about 2000miles before the wrong quality def light come on. Had in to jag specialist who drained and refilled. Few months later same issue so they updated the software drain refill in February and now back again. Just no luck

Sorry to hear that you certainly arnt having much luck at all! Have they cleaned the adblue injector at all? I’d imagine there is a software update much the same as the XE as I’m sure they probably use the same system. I’d maybe book it in to jaguar themselves and explain what’s been done and see if there is a jaguar software update sadly o think that’s the only course of action.

@@TrackAndBeyond yeah ive had it to a jaguar specialist and they checked the injector it's clean they had updated the software to. Had it back in yesterday they have taken it for a dry run and seems there's an issue with some sensor it's reading 10 then dropping so hopefully come Monday issue should be sorted

The video is good, but I think you missed one important thing to mention - what is the right liquid for Jag XE? I want to top up in my car, watched several videos, everybody saying to put the right on AdBlue, but nobody says which one is, or maybe to get closer the camera to the label.

I think Iv mentioned it in one of the comments above but will add it to the description of the video. Here’s a link to the genuine Jaguar DEF i used: rimmerbros.com/Item--i-LR104014 The handbook states that AdBlue fluid should meet ISO standard 22241-1. However most people use any quality branded adblue and hasn’t caused an issue. Hope that helps Jason

Thank man! As far as I know the adblue injector doesn’t spray all the time I think it cycles whilst driving too keep emissions down so could be why it’s not spraying whilst connected. The secondary NoX sensor fails on these causing that fault also! There is also an ECU update regarding this issue also!

So the secondary NoX sensor is about half way down the exhaust system under the car. You have to take a load of plastic under tray bits off to get to it. You can buy a sensor for £119 on eBay but I don’t think it’s a genuine sensor. I need to do one on mine but had the Adblue mapped out the car so it’s not urgent

Good video sadly not resolved my issues. I had 'disel exhaust fluid quality incorrect' so followed both steps in this video clenainf then injector and the tank. Code changed to diesel exhaust fluid dosing malfunction. I went for 20 mile drive and tried to clear on obd but no luck

There are ECU updates than can be applied by dealer grade diagnostic equipment. Could also be your secondary NoX sensor has failed

I think so as code wise I have P2BAE (00) and (02) which both state nox sensor exceed then have the p2baf (00) is there no way of resting the countdown without NOX replacement

Hi guys Thought I might just throw this out there but it is one scanner I found that is capable of deleting this error message “Incorrect diesel exhaust fluid detected” it’s called the DA-ST512 for Jaguar and Land Rover. Problem is it cost £510. It’s the official product the dealers use.

Sadly Not really no, there is a specification of adblue that Jaguar state you need to use but most of what’s for sale matches this spec any way. There is a software update to widen the settings in the ECU but majority of the causes now is the secondary NoX sensor which reads the emissions after the adblue treatment and if it fails or starts to fail the car thinks the adblue isn’t working

It will give you a warning to say it’s low and will give you 1,000 miles to top it up 😀

Yea I filled it 5l as it’s half way for the tank and saves overfilling which can cause issues. depending on the model there are 2 different tank sizes one at 9l and one at 18l I believe. I

That’s a tricky one to answer. Their are some very costly issues that rear they’re head but theirs no exact time iv seen engines fail at 20k and engines fail at nearer 200k. Any car manufacture has issues but the Ingenium diesel engine maybe has a few more issues than most. Turbos fail and chains stretch and the adblue system is actually a NoX sensor failure. If maintained and probably change the oil more frequently it could be a more reliable engine. I change my oil every year or 10,000 miles whatever comes first where as jag recommend 2 years and 25k miles

Should just unscrew as normal. If it’s right you can fit a ratchet in the square in the centre and undo it that way 😃

This issue killed my car, I love driving and when I bought my XF the error message came on 2 days later. Returning the vehicle as the dealership lied about the cars condition too. Not only losing my beautiful XF but now without a car at all

Oh no that’s terrible! Sorry to read this man! Unfortunately after doing a lot of research it seems many manufactures including Mercedes are struggling with this issue, the fault is actually thrown up due to the NoX sensor failing. I wouldn’t judge Jaguar on your experience so far after this had been sorted the cars been faultless and love it! Hope you get something sorted soon! Jason

@@TrackAndBeyond thanks for your supportive comment Jason. I actually spoke with a Jaguar mechanic today and he says the engine cut off through faulty Nox sensor is the law. It’s been dictated to manufacturers that in the event of an adblue issue, the car should not be on the road, thus the ‘no engine restart’ failsafe. Another big government policy interfering with our passion of driving

Useful video. Thank you! I've had nothing but trouble with my XE and the warning about Ad Blue quality is just one of about 30+ issues. My ultimate cure is to get rid of it and never buy a Jag or Land Rover again. But I'm stuck with it for now and I have 200 miles left before it no longer allows engine restarts. At the end, you said 'hopefully' that should solve it. But I'm wondering if your solution worked to clear the message? p.s. Hi Daleep, thanks for the kind words about the video! Firstly, sad to read you’ve had multiple issues with your Jag. I wouldn’t get rid though as what I’m about to explain regarding the adblue system isn’t just a jaguar land rover issue. So when I say “hopefully” that’s becuse I know that there is a software update available for the XE Adblue system and I had to have that done aswell as do all the bits I did in the video. I think I have come to the conclusion that the main cause of this issue is the adblue goes bad whilst sitting in the tanks of our cars Adblue requires correct conditions to be stored and those conditions aren’t matched when it’s sitting inside the tank. Drain the tank and refilling it theory should cure all issues but as mentioned above I know there is a software update so may need that. Also, the jaguar dealer would want to try and charge you for a drain and refill when having the update done so if you tell them you have already done that they can’t charge you for doing that and “should” only charge you for the update. I took it to Jaguar (as suggested in your comment to me) and insisted they reset the computer. They took it away for about 15 mins and came back sorted. I didn't pay anything. Most people have been quoted £1,200 for an end-to-end fix. Thanks to you I paid what the car is worth (i.e. nothing). Sincere thanks Jason! :-)

Sadly it’s not just a jag thing 😢 iv seen a lot of Mercedes guys are having a similar issue, it’s all down to the second NoX sensor. After doing loads of research it appears it’s a manufacture wide issue with NoX sensors being extremely temperamental

It’s fine on emissions testing as they do a rev smoke test more than anything on an MOT
