Gara Von Hoiwkenzoiber A pilot doesn't save everyone's life on a plane by landing in terrible conditions. If they crash and die, it's because he a made a stupid decision. If it's that dangerous, the only way the pilot can save everyone's life is by making a wise decision and landing at some other airport where the conditions aren't so dangerous. Presumably, this pilot knew the conditions were within the capabilities of the plane and his piloting skills. That's all.

Congratulations to the responsible engineers who made all that structure and equipment for the pilot to use and try to save his own life under all flying and crashing conditions, where other people may benefit. From what I can see the wind impulses were fast, but conscientious engineers designed the pulse characteristic response of that large plane using the right amount of power and control surfaces to react so fast on their anchorage points that the wings are seen to bend violently but not to twist and to hold and force the inertia of the fuselage to roll as desired. The ailerons are seen working at their maximum speed and deviation, which only a responsible engineer can build where the rolling damping is an integral part of the wing design. This action together with the inclined design of the bogie wheels ensured that the rolling angular momentum was first damped by the inclination of the undercarriage and then the taken weight stored energy in the springy/ damping medium and right size orifices to cause one bounce but the size of those spoilers quickly cut down the lift at the right time to stop wind gusts bouncing the plane back in the air. Those diffusers to slow down the air in the burners within the engines so that the flame is not blown out by the high velocity output of the compressors are quite a headache to design and ensure that engines react to any rate of change of the throttle demands plus the revers thrust and the brakes to stop the plane safely. The pilot did fine to understand how to use all this, for it saved his life.

Let us now proceed to understand what makes a good computer programme or a good pilot to control planes in any condition. It all had to do with the capacity of the sensors in the engineering or the pilot human detection system, I have to speak mathematically. There are sensors to pick up at least three parameters in AMPLITUDE, VELOCITY ACCELERATION in any dimension of pitch, roll, and yaw, and the similar information in error in height, drift to port and starboard and distance ahead to target. If a pilot is new he would control using positional error, which could be delayed and so the plane would oscillate and never fly a steady route. If the pilot can detect the rate of change in any dimension mentioned then he can control better as he need not achieve a position to know that there is a position error in the making. If the pilot can detect that the plane is accelerating in any of the variables mentioned then he can counteract the action by using acceleration errors which is even better than detecting the velocity in a particular variable. In a storm where there could be FAST external inputs due to wind etc, the pilot would be more equipped if he could detect what comes before acceleration. Thus a high calibre pilot would apply his controls before the plane gains an error in velocity or position that is if the plane is accelerating he would apply the counterpart of that at the acceleration state and so there will be no acceleration and so the plane will hold its position. He could not do that if the pilot waits for the plane to have a positional error as that is too late for fast stormy external inputs. All this is called derivative control as it needs to be fast. In long distance flights there is an integral control which detects the error in position and integrates it slowly and if this has a value it would be fed to the control system to cancel the error. It is going the other way to what is required to correct long time errors and it is called Integral Control For fast immediate control in a storm one needs to detect, many errors, the particular amplitude of an error, the rate of change or the error(velocity) and the rate of change of velocity( acceleration) and the rate of change of acceleration ( ????) and the rate of change of the rate of change of acceleration, the higher order derivative one can go the better pilot he is for fast immediate control of internal and external errors. For error in long distance flights one needs to know the integral of the positional error. All this can be processed by a good human brain/ mind, ( once he knows all this) but normally a new pilot or one with few brain cells he could only handle positional errors and so he would oscillate the control as when someone learns a car for the first time. The delay in noticing the positional error and reacting to it is too long. If a pilot can quickly detect that the plane is accelerating in any particular error then the pilot applies control BEFORE the plane takes up a velocity or a positional error. From what I can see in this video, the pilot was detecting the acceleration of the roll and pitch, but he was holding it for too long causing the plane to oscillate a little. I would not say that all this is beyond the capacity of a human pilot and to learn faster a pilot should not just fly his plane with holding the stick in the same position, but he should CONTINUOUSLY move the stick giving an internal STEP error and then apply the next move so that he would steady the action without overshoot. My 10 year old daughter and I flew as passengers in small planes and obviously my daughter had to sit beside the pilot who gave her the stick to handle the plane. As I had told her about continuously moving the stick in continuous steps as in a PULSE WIDTH MODULATION system, she did just that, to follow the coast and within five minutes she felt the reaction of the plane to the step input and decreased the magnitude of the step input till the stick was being moved in minute steps so minutely at the right time when the plane was accelerating that it could not be detected by the pilot who insisted than my daughter had flown before. On a higher inertia craft as a 5,000 ton passenger ferry, on which the Masters appreciated my contribution as an engineer, they often gave me the wheel to see how I perform. I did what I always do to learn to handle new craft, I gave square error control and saw how the ship reacted when the ship had gathered pitch momentum. To aim for the target port, I applied rudder much before the bow faced port as that would have been too late. I kept that ship as straight as an arrow., irrespective of wave motion and wind speed.......... where the captain accused me that I had done it all before which I had never done before, and what I told him...................... Sir, as engineers we do more mathematics than you do and so I know exactly what to detect and react for it before the amplitude and velocity errors are integrated. So my advise to all pilots is ................ do not train your eyes to detect amplitude error in yaw, roll, pitch , height, errors to port starboard or how far from target................... at least operate on detecting the accelerations in each individual variable and reacting to it at the acceleration stage, not its velocity not its position. If you can train yourself to detect that what comes before acceleration ................ then you can fly in typhoons and land an A380 on an aircraft carrier, even without an arresting hook. With side winds you can still do it as all one needs is to set the state of the neutral positions of rudder, elevator , ailerons to an new value and take the stick control errors relative to this new value. Happy flying in all weather and please do think what engineers do for you and what signals are processed in silence and unseen, when you go in automatic control system!!! Learn it well so that you can save your lives.

Flying like this by instinct and the seat of your pants, in constantly variable wind gusts, needs skill to get it right. Wrestling with constant trim corrections is no joke. The last 30 seconds are always a bit hairy because you're almost there, but not quite down. That last twitch to the right side before touchdown, could have easily had the wing tip scrape the runway, it was very close! Nice piloting in this clip, - a job well done.👊👍

The pilots took an unnecessary risk with the passengers under these terrible conditions, there were better alternatives, you know it if you are a pilot, there is no need to praise what happened here, this is not an air show and this is not acrobatics. Shameful, just shameful, all the pilot worshipers out there, what a disgraceful situation. I’m a pilot to and I know how to land in adverse cross wind conditions and I don’t need any lectures about how I wish I could do it. I would never do it like that with passengers on board. With my own plane and only me on board, I like doing Crosswind Landing’s, kind of exciting. But this is not excusable, risking lives of innocent passengers.

We once went to London (from Amsterdam) in our national pride: a Fokker Friendship. We had to land in a 'stiff breeze' - as they say across the Channel - and we knew already that our pilots were Australian (recognize an Ozzie anywhere...). So, after some reeling and rockng, slipping and sliding, rolling, yawing, bumping and what not, we came to a standstill. After a stunned silence, came the remark of one of our fellow-passengers: "They must have been on the team of the "Flying Bush Doctors"'.
