I talk a lot about why I love using work exchanges to travel, but there are some drawbacks I don't mention often. Here they are!
If you're thinking of doing a work-stay with Workaway or other work exchanges, consider these 8 bits of information before you go. These are things I didn't know before I went, but after 4 Workaways in 4 countries, I noticed these are pretty constant negatives.
If you're thinking of using Workaway, I recommend checking out this video I did, which answers most questions you might have: • EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO...

Ive done dozens of them at this point. 31 countries and counting from alpaca farms to animal sanctuaries and adventure hostels. These are great points, but entire depend on the exchange. Some times I have "worked" (volueenterd) 6 hours a day and others 1 hour a day. Sometimes I worked a lot but had great dinners, another I worked little and was treated to a free skydive. There is no question, Go! However here are some importamt things to keep in mind before going your first time, ask : 1. What will my accomodation be like? 2. Will the commute there be difficult? one time I paid for an 80$ taxi and had no idea it was more than 10$ 3. What is expected of you in terms of work and will i be with another human person 4. What kinds of things does the host do for fun, you are going to integrate with them after all! Enjoy the trip and expect only the good, prepare for the potential bad.

Seems to me like these "drawbacks" reside entirely in your reasons for using workaway. If you're using it to get to know locals and meet people, exchange, and engage, these "drawbacks" are actually good things. Whereas, if you're using it to freeload, well yeah, they can be percieved as drawbacks cause nothing is actually free !

I'm looking into workaway rn, my feelings are: I have to work so much just to be able to afford plane tickets I don't know if I wanna be working there as well lol, even if it's for a couple hours. I feel like it's best to just go on vacation to places far away (if you stay in hostels you'll get the cultural exchange experience anyways) and doing workaway somewhere closer/easier. For me at least.

Hi Romi! Everyone's experiences are different--you have to do what feels right to you. When I first began traveling, it was with very limited funds and the determination to travel anyway. I found Workaway originally because it was a say to save hundreds of dollars on places to stay. I continued using Workaway because it was such a unique experience and gave me the opportunity to learn new things and be fully immersed in another culture. The experience you get from Workaway is different from a vacation; I'd say it's more of an adventure. :D

Hi Shawna! I definitely urge you to try using Workaway. When I first thought of traveling, I put the idea off for the "future" because I didn't have the money for it. But once I found out about Workaway, suddenly there were more options. And it's a different (arguably better) experience than simply traveling. I'll do more Workaways in the future, I'm sure.

@FearlessJacey
@FearlessJacey 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jacob! Good question! In addition to these tips, you can also find information within the Workaway website. I suggest referencing back to their profile so they know you read it all, and that this is not a copy-paste email. If they ask for someone who loves to work outside, mention something about yourself that proves it. When I apply to someone who wants a volunteer who works well with others, I mention my 7 years' restaurant experience. If they want someone in the garden, I mention how much I love gardening and what my experience is with it. The basic structure I use is this: Greeting (with their name if you can find it), short intro ("My name is...I'd like to work on your property in August..."), address requests from profile ("I see you mentioned...I have experience...I'd love to learn..."), short overall character statement ("I use workaway to meet new people...traveling is my passion...culture...learning...etc"), and a nice note at the end ("I hope to hear from you soon...etc."). Be honest and personal.

@FearlessJacey
@FearlessJacey 6 жыл бұрын
When using Workaway, the costs are mostly up to you. Most Workaway agreements involve free room and food in exchange for your time and labor. What you pay for during a Workaway stay is visiting attractions on weekend, going out to dinner, or buying souveniers or extra groceries. You do have to pay for your transportation TO and FROM the Workaway location though.

The great thing about Workaway is you only pay $40 for the membership (a fantastic deal), then transportation to your workaway. Some Workaways are for 3-6 months, some are for 1-4 weeks. There are so many options.

Hi Joana! Thank you, I'm glad you found it too. 😬 In regards to traveling to your Workaway, that is all on you. Workaway itself is just a platform, like AirBnB or Facebook. It allows you to connect with hosts who agree to put you up in exchange for some work. I think Workaway is a fantastic way to spend some free time before going to college. I learned so much from my Workaway experiences. I was overwhelmed when I first decided to travel with Workaway. I mean there are literally thousands of phenomenal opportunities around the globe. How do you choose? I used Google Flights to search for the cheapest plane ticket to Europe (I just had Europe in mind at the time). Flights to Paris and Toulouse were relatively inexpensive, so I decided to search for a Workaway in France. I found a fantastic place, messaged back and forth for a few days, Skyped the hosts, and booked my flight once they said I can come. It was truly a wonderful time. Let me know if you have any other questions! I'd love to help if I can.

Hi Daniel! I only posted this video to be as transparent as possible. All of the other Workaway videos I made were about the things I love about Workaway, so I wanted to be honest. I still hugely recommend trying Workaway. If I had to redo it, I'd go back and do all 4 Workaways again. Please don't let this dissuade you. I just want to add a pinch of salt to let you know that this, like most things, is not 100% happiness and rainbows. I hope you still give it a try. If you go and don't like it, you can always return. But if you don't go, you'll just continue to be where you are. As a rule of thumb, I say learning from experiences is better than having no new experiences.

But they only work 5 hours 5 days right? On the weekend, the 2 days off..you can go out and check around the place by yourself I am sure..So..I think that is enough to check around..then after the WorkAway maybe you could stay 2 days extra to check the place out again. Am I right? I am going to start my 3 months WorkAway projects in KL and Penang from June to September...but still I really would like to know what work I can do while travel. I want to see the World. But I don't want to worry about money. Not to get rich..just don't want run out of spending money. And importantly the Flight..to your destination. How you want to buy the ticket if you are broke? Right?
@FearlessJacey
@FearlessJacey 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, those are excellent questions! The work requirements change by host, so make sure to read their profile carefully.Your days off aren't likely to be weekends, just any 2 days. Sometimes your host might want three 8 hour days, or six 4 hour days, etc. It depends on the work. The host may be nice enough to show you the local area in your time off. Usually I spent zero dollars during my workaway stays, but I didn't buy souvenirs and I ate what the family provided for me. Best of luck!!

A quick question: What sort of equipment are you using to make your videos? I'm embarking on very much the same path as you and I want to document as a blog and KZfaq videos. So I'm curious as to what you're using to document your adventures. I assuming you're using a laptop... what sort of laptop are you using? What sort of camera are you using? A cell phone camera? Hi Hendrsb33, I currently have a Macbook Pro and Nikon 5600, but started with my old Dell and a GoPro. Most of my videos were from the GoPro Hero 5. IT's not the best, but it did the job. Until my harddrive broke. I recommend a laptop with a SSD with less moving parts.

Hi Rafal. Great question! You can travel with a friend. You can even make a Couples Account if you're in a couple. I've only ever used Workaway as a solo traveler though. I've gone to hosts where I was the only Workawayer and where I was a group of 4-8. Personally, I prefer going to hosts where I'm not the only volunteer, then I can make friends and spend time with the other volunteers too. If you have a friend from home who wants to join you, you can both apply on solo accounts, or create a couples account. It's up to the host to decide if they want one or both of you to join them. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions! 😁😁😁
