A tutorial for drawing the head and face. Mainly focused on setting up mental guidelines for being able to draw realistic faces from the mind without reference. A remake of the first video on the channel. This video was done in Painter 12 using the basic "scratchboard tool" as the brush. One face is from reference, mentioned in the video. Every other face is done without reference material.

@zippythewildone In my sketchbooks, I always just used pens... I suppose that makes you be more confident with your lines. The purpose of the skull stuff is mainly to drill the proportions into your head. The fleshyness of a face can make it difficult to figure out all of your visual cues for proportions. That is why visualizing the skull is so great. It has such obvious landmarks and visual cues. At the end of the day, just draw a lot of faces and you'll be fine.

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that your tutorial made me really happy. Even though there are heaps of online resources that show how to draw faces, this is the only one that made me smile just because I can hear it in your voice that this is something you really love and something that keeps your engine ticking and gives me hope that maybe one day I can comfortably draw at this level and be as happy as you are :) peace

At first, i'll admit, i was like...oh god. Skulls and anatomy and more studying and blehh. But the further i went on...the more inspired i got. So i guess im going to end up picking back up my skull studies after all XD Because drawing expressive and unique faces is my biggest goal amongst my many others

@DarkSaibot88 It's just minor interface differences and control stuff, as well as how the brushes feel. I wouldn't say one is better, and photoshop does a lot of great things with custom brushes that painter doesn't. But overall, I just feel more at home in Painter.

You have no idea how useful this was for me. I think I'm pretty decent at drawing. faces aswel, but these small things just put things into perspective for me. (well, not literally.) Hands down, The best video on youtube on how to construct a face. You cover functionality and shapes and placement in one. It improved my visual understanding of the face and skull greatly.

@Lydomina I've tried the guideline stuff far in the past, but this ties into the second part of the question. I only use either a lining pen or a brush pen to do all of my traditional sketching. No room for guidelines there.

@omanitnathan I don't think my pen pressure is anything special, but if yours feels off to you, be sure to mess with the settings in your Control Panel -> Wacom Tablet Settings.. as well as on the tablet itself. The sensitivity should feel natural to you, so that you're getting the line weight you want instinctively. Painter has a preference setting called "brush tracking" which helps adjust sensitivity. I'm not sure if photoshop has something similar as well.

Thanks for a very enjoyable video. I admire the sureness of your lines which are so dark, crisp and sharp! What's been most enjoyable, though, is my attempting to go draw along with you; as, basically, everyone draws 'different', I guess; so the faces that came out when I copied yours...were NOT the sort of faces I as a 'beginner' would normally produce. Certainly, I tend to struggle an awful lot with getting proportions right; and, your proportions are therefore far better than is mine. The overall lesson I learned here is...when you try NOT copying...then, you are in effect copying yourself(not a good thing when you're a beginner?!); but, when you copy from others...who, really and truly, know what they're doing; then, you learn one hell of a lot more. ;-)

I think it is absolutely necessary to learn everything about the skull before drawing the flesh that is if one desires drawing from the mind. Many face tutorials I came across are deemed helpful, but always find something lacking. In addition some are like reading a textbook; not as fun to watch. I also like your little I suppose unintentional countenance lessons. And your style is awesome! Thanks!

It might just be that I don't know how to change the brush preferences, but the flat pens/brushes mostly have an automated tilt that results in them rotating instead of remaining flat...I don't know how to better explain...sorry..

I had a thought about half way through the video - it would be cool if you took the traditional anatomical approach and theory and apply them to comic/cartoon characters, so we could see what Homer Simpson, Mickey Mouse, Rick Sanchez, Fred Flintstone etc etc would look like under the skin 🤔👍

@sinixdesign Ah, I asked because it seems like you mostly draw from right to left instead of the other way around. I'm right handed too(amazing right?), but I can't play pool or open bottles and jars with my right hand for some reason. Next 2 questions: Have you always drawn without guidelines? Also, have you always preferred an ink style brush(no pressure sensitivity) for doing sketches digitally(or even traditionally)?
