Fun fact: court jesters were the only people who couldn’t be punished for what they said! So technically, Jacob couldn’t be beheaded for saying how much he loves Hot Joseph!
@lilacpen8678
@lilacpen8678 2 жыл бұрын
I just made this comment, but I love the dynamic of the court jester so much I'll repeat myself. I find it hilarious how they mock jesters, but in reality, the court jester was often one of the most power people in the political sphere. Renouned for their wit, they naturally had to be quite clever, and were not only allowed to mock the king or queen, but encouraged to do so. Because of this, they doubled as political advisors, as they had the ability to criticize any decisions the nobility made. It was also their job to be the bearer of bad news to royalty. Also, they wore the same clothes as nobility. The iconic jesters outfit was reserved for novices and apprentices.

That's not strictly true, if they offended the royals hard enough they could be punished. So yes, Jacob *could* be guillotined for Meat Man

There's a welsh town with jester as a job in modern day...he even started his own cafe or something. Quite fun. so technically, Jester is not obsolete.

Well, the king could bludgeon the jester to death if he wished it or he would order someone else to do it. But I get what you mean. Isn't there a jester that took care of the treasury and helped in the war room makin plans? I think I read that some where or maybe it was on the youtube channel Absolute History 🤔

Regarding "useful man:" after watching "Downton Abbey" I did a bunch of research of the hierarchy of European great houses, and HOO there's a lot. A footman ranks pretty highly, they're a man who's pretty enough and well-mannered enough to do the visible work of the house, like waiting on the table and greeting people at the door. The hall boy is the lowest level, they actually serve the servants and sleep in the hall. The useful man is somewhere in the middle and does very general work, you know, carrying things, polishing silver and that kind of thing.

Broomsquires were just dudes who made brooms and useful men were domestic male servants. But that's not the weirdest of obsolete jobs. Link boys (which had nothing to do with chains) were just some kids who would hold torches to light the way at night before gas lights were invented. Garden hermits were just like these hermits that were allowed to live on rich peoples land and just do their own thing. Essentially they were like novelty lawn ornaments. But out of all the obsolete jobs, I think the worst one was the gong farmer. Basically, before plumbing these guys would clean out latrines and cess pits. I think its safe to say that people are pretty happy they don't have deal with clearing out massive pit of human waste with only a shovel. I mean, people still have clean up after other people but at least we have PPE and hazmat equipment so we don't have to deal with cholera or dysentery.

And interestingly, they didn’t actually get sick that much more often than other people… the night soil men NOT getting cholera at a higher rate than other people was actually a factor that made it more convincing that disease wasn’t caused by “vapors” or “bad air” but instead drinking polluted water. Source is the Ghost Map, about cholera in London

Fun fact: There actually are a few places in the UK and US that still refer to the person who is in charge of the animal pound as the poundmaster in official paperwork. The California Agricultural Code uses the term several times (and includes a definition and list of synonymous terms), and many counties and municipalities in California officially do have poundmasters.

I found and article that mentioned broom-squires were not a position obviously of wealth and importance. Squire is an insult in this case. It said they are often grouped with Apple-squire aka a companion for a lady of ill repute aka a pimp. I think Nathan's depiction is much nicer and more wholesome than what the actual job was. Also in this article it said they were relegated to the heathlands of England and Surrey.
