I no longer draw, but plan to again someday, on thing I did when I did draw was to just use the same standard black and yellow pencil for everything, I knew of different hardness of graphite but on the one occasion I did I found it all a bit daunting knowing what was for what and very messy/smudgy

I am so glad that I found your channel. I'm 64 and just started to learn watercolor. I learned how to set up my palette by your videos. I haven't drawn anything since 6th grade and have been beating myself up and quitting so many times. But I'm stubborn and want to learn. You have put so much in perspective for me. Thankyou so much. You can tell that you are a good teacher. I love how you use examples and explanation the reason behind everything'. I will be watching a lot of your previous videos. Retired and looking forward to my new adventures 😊

Oh Michele, you're such a great teacher, not just straightforward information but humour. I only decided to learn to draw last year and my sins start at 10 and go up to 1, but the greatest of these is 1. Get involved in intricate detail which then expands and expands as I try to pack more in. I don't feel so frustrated now I know I am not alone.

Michele has to be one of the funniest of the KZfaq artists. “That tree looks like it’s from a horror movie. OK, I’m going to stop drawing a tree now“. In another video, can’t remember which one, she said that playing Céline Dion music loudly should be outlawed. 😆 Also, she’s quite intelligent/knowledgeable outside of art. Considering drawing a flat fish as an example of a rule breaker was pretty cool.

Getting a proper perspective on objects is a continual struggle for me, your advice on depth etc is extremely helpful. Like the last commenter, I am 64 too, and I began trying my hand at watercolour during the first lockdown when my granddaughter said: “Come and do some art with me, Nanny.” The moment I held that paintbrush in my hand I was hooked. I’m not good, but I love it. My old office is now my craft room (though one of my daughters calls it my ‘crap’ room because she thinks that’s what I make 😂). I don’t care. I discovered your channel only a couple of weeks ago but I’ve already subscribed and watched several of your videos. You’re easy to listen to, very instructive and honest about your own shortcomings. I like that. Makes me, and I’m sure everyone else, feel they don’t have to get things perfect right away. Thank you so much 😊

Extraordinary! I learned so much in this 30 minute video. You answered about a million questions I’ve had forever about drawing. I had a drawing instructor decades ago that made us all erase and start over, over and over, but she never explained what we were doing wrong and why we had to start over. I gave up on drawing for many years because that’s the impression I was left with about it, erase and start over ‘til you get it right, never having the HOW answered. Big heavy sigh. Thank you for sharing, Michelle! I’m close to tears of relief right now. I’ll be watching this many times. My biggest issue at the moment is drawing or painting from the shoulder. I don’t think I’ve quite got that yet because I have aches and pains I probably shouldn’t have, but I’m old too, lol. I’ll keep working on it. Blessings to you from Indian Rocks Beach in sunny Florida!

@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber So true! In hindsight, I’d have been better off dropping the class and finding a REAL drawing instructor. I watched all of your short videos too, and also learned a lot. Would you consider doing a short that demonstrates the mechanics of drawing from the shoulder. For some reason my head doesn’t get it. Either my elbow is moving too much, or my hand is moving too much. Maybe I need to clamp my arm to my side until I get a hold of this, lol. You know, I had the same trouble back in the ‘70s when learning to cut hair, I always had my arms up too high until one of my instructors pointed to the lift at the bottom of the chair and said in a commanding voice “LOWER YOUR CHAIR,” lol. I finally got it after that. Thanks for all you do and especially for your straight up approach. So many out here on YT teach a concept, and then blast the thing away with wishy washy commentary that only confuses me (and likely everyone else). Your a star Michele! Oh, and I’ve done tai chi, but currently doing Happy Yoga with Sarah Starr here on YT. Blessings to you!

@@rmuller366 I will try and do a demo. Allow your arm to move freely at the shoulder, not only forward and back but also to the side, as if you were making a chicken wing motion, so you get a full circular motion. Your elbow can move a little. 🙂

Thank you for sharing this very useful information that beginners can actually use rather than quick sketches that really explain nothing about what to look for in the subject. I knew about 8 of the mistakes, but I taught some drawing in High School. I saw students making these mistakes constantly. Personally, I would like to learn about how to draw forest scenes that capture the essence of particular trees ( how the limbs are shaped in different types of trees) and how to suggest the light and shadow without drawing every leaf. Complicated I know but I thought I would put this out there. Drawings can be so much more magical than photos and this is what I would like to capture.....

It's funny how I've been an artist since my first 'wall installation' at age 2, much to my mom's chagrin... and I still learned or re-learned an easier way how to do a couple basics! Thank you Michele. :) I'm lucky because Mom did right by me and she encouraged my art and writing . At 15 she let me take over the basement, and it became my first studio. THAT was sheer luck and her generosity. So moms and dads out there - teach your kid how to clean up when their art ends up on the wrong canvas, and give them a better canvas - be it a simple pad of paper , or a spare room with table and chair and a way for them to earn money to fill it with the gear for the form of art that grabs them. The lovely madness began there in that studio and the 48 years since my first art gallery show have been made better by creating many types / forms of art. It never hurts to try something new! The best part of my art journey was the years I volunteered as an art assistant at my local VA (vet's hospital).

Bless you! As a senior citizen I decided to learn to drawing, so now all my essential tools are here, read a ‘how to book’ and yup, I made all the mistakes you stated, 1 thru 10! Thank you for showing the how-too, as I’m a visual learner I’m saving this video with my plan to watch all your other ones too. I will then restart from video 1 and draw with you! Thank you again for a great video!

Excellent summary. Guilty of many, but I have learned to deal with the objects tipping up from you from another video. Helped me tremendously.
