Whistle Register Singing. Not every voice can sing whistle notes! Whistle register is a very cool thing to do and adds the all-important WOW factor when applied at the right moment in a song. But what is whistle register and can every singer learn to sing those uber-high notes?

Very interesting topic. I have found that there are many things that our voices/vocal folds are capable of doing that may or may not be accessible all the time. I discovered my whistle voice when I was sick and I had laryngitis. I was barely able to speak and when I tried to sing I could either sing very low or my voice would jump octaves. I think this is due to swelling. In fact, I think Mariah Carey recorded some of her best whistle voice notes when she was sick. Not sure if that is verified, but I have heard that. After discovering my whistle voice, I started trying to access it all the time. It was much easier when I would practice it all the time, but I realized that I was better at it when my voice was fatigued and that didn't seem like a good thing to me. Also, it served no purpose in helping me to become a better singer and to sing my songs with the sound I wanted. I rarely try to even access my whistle voice anymore because I would prefer to focus on the sounds I actually use. I have, however, recorded myself singing C6, Eb6, and C7 in whistle voice. It's not actual singing. Just sounds. I also recorded myself singing very low notes (usually when I am kind of sick). I got down to G1 and F1. They are low vocal fry sounds. I think whistle voice and vocal fry are similar in that they use specific parts of the vocal folds only to produce their extreme pitch. Here is the audio of the different notes I vocalized: picosong.com/7mHz/

Dr Dan's Voice Essentials I do it a ton and I'm a guy I can hit a B7 and when my voice is in a wierd state I recorded a super high note and compared it with your friend Adam lopez who has the highest male voice and some people said I did it higher so... gotta see if the video will count in the Guinness book of world records

Dr Dan's Voice Essentials also is it a bad thing if sometimes when u belt a high note that a whistle is polyphonic or u have raspy chest polyphonic when doing whistles sometimes cause I can count like 3 times I belted and had a whistle polyphonic and one not if I start off with a break it's polyphonic during the break

I used to sing in Whistle register a lot--- I think in part because of Sarah Brightman XD But it was my favorite thing to do with Mariah Carey and so forth. I will be ecstatic if, after retraining and working my voice, I can do it again. The cool thing was that I never felt any strain. When my old vocal instructor told me that you should never show strain or feel it in the voice, it made me happy to know I was doing it right haha.

Nice one, Dr. Dan! This isn't a topic I've seen discussed much but it's something that's always intrigued me. I used to be able to get into whistle register and I'm a natural baritone, but it's such an unusual, non-intuitive way to direct the air, and at such a surprisingly low level of pressure, that it takes ages to learn the balance to do it consistently. I'm guessing you're probably aware of Mike Patton, the lead singer of Faith No More and countless other bands/projects? If not, check out his work with John Zorn; he uses whistle register and a lot of other cool extended techniques in improvisations and also incorporated a lot of them into fairly 'normal' rock music. It's amazing how some people don't have access to these same sorts of spaces vocally and really shows the uniqueness of each voice. I'm going to play around with this again and see if I can relearn how to access it and incorporate it into something!

I'm a lyric Bass that can go down to G#-1 and mostly sing in the first and second octave, in chest i can go up to C4 or D4, on falsetto the lowest i can go is like A#2 and up to probably F#6 but sometimes up to B6 is pretty achievable, but the whistle tones are a rarity for me and the last time i get access to it i play around until i reach like an F#7, i really want to sing whistle notes frequently and improve it also to extend my vocal range further to the 8th or the 9th octave

Funny you mention Mitch Grassi here. He's actually one of the first whistle registers I've heard. And really, I just envied how cool it sounded. So I just said "hey, I wanna do it". And I did. No training, nothing. My only training I've had is singing in a choir class for two years (though I do want to continue). I knew males could access it, I just felt it was a more rare thing. Probably because males just sing lower in general and everyone in my class seemed to be baritones aside from me.

I am a bass-baritone(I've recently found I sing very well in the key of F# minor). Anyway, I think I may have developed a whistle register relatively well, although I don't ever use it in my hard rock music. Unless maybe I'm confusing it with falsetto.

I can get into it sometimes, through a combination of messing around with various ideas to get those squeaks out, then copying Mariah and messing around with 'Emotions', using the run up in it to try to get a note. It's not really a good time investment for me though, and I'm not so bothered with it. Still, for me I have to have my jaw open very wide, even more so than standard extra high notes. I used the tiniest amount of air at first, like you're making a creak or squeak, then worked it from there. Freya Casey's video was the most helpful for advice on how to do it. Maybe others interested might find these ideas help them a bit.

Yes I wouldn't worry about it at all if anyone can't get there, it's has very niche application, you're not missing much. It's a fun distraction but low down on my practice priorities. Most people enjoy songs sung in the typical comfortable range for a guy, and even if you like singing high, do you really need it? probably not.

Interesting question. When I started singing ~10years ago, I thought that those uber high notes were only accessible for a select few. But 10 years ago there was not nearly as much information about the technique. And I have heard a lot more people doing it. I suspect that most people are physically capable, but that's only a guess. I haven't had much success myself, but I do believe I've been able to access it, not by singing up to it chromatically (I can get to about Eb6), but by singing normal high notes (e.g. F5) and jumping an octave. I have eeked out some higher pitches that way, with almost no control over it... but I have spent no time practicing it. I feel like there may be untapped potential there, but honestly I don't know if I have the motivation to learn to actually sing up there.

C6 and above are actually called whistle in contemporary singing? cos for me they were Just like very high notes at the singer's modal range like i use to do and whistle were Just a crazy sound you do that was not found at the piano like a G7 for example :)
