My doctor told me I was anemic many years ago. I used to have to go in and get vitamin B 12 shots in the arm but my insurance doesn’t cover that anymore and I can’t afford to go to the doctor for $250 each time. I don’t want to take iron pills because they constipate me. But I have stopped running. I have zero energy anymore. I get very pale when normally I have a good color, … and now my skin adjusting all the time. I no longer have health insurance so I can’t afford to get blood work.

Thank you! I have been struggling with anemia all through the pandemic as my gyno provider closed in 2020 and I went without care for a long time. While I knew most of these symptoms were part of anemia, angular cheilitis was a new one to me and I had dealt with that too with no explanation. It's very distressing to have all of these random things happening while you're trying to be strong, keep moving forward, and live your life in a pandemic. Putting all of the pieces together and knowing it's not all in my head is very validating and empowering. Thank you.

Fantastic info! Wish I would have known this while caring for my mother-in-law. Her dementia made it a bit difficult to diagnose when to go to a doctor, and she needed blood transfusions a few times due to low iron. I could have (a) gotten her treated sooner, and (b) looked to see if other symptoms (like itch, dry skin, etc) resolved shortly after the transfusion (thus possibly sparing her unnecessary visits to other doctors for those symptoms). But, now I know. Thank you Dr. Dray. It is obviously you care about not just your career, but specifically people well being. Thanks!

I've been a vegetarian/vegan for almost 10 years while being super low in iron and my hair shed like crazy but I refused to accept it. Then I was diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia but Minoxidil would only work to a certain extent. Now I've been eating meat again for six months and my hair completely stopped shedding. It makes me very sad to do that but after being on a plant based lifestyle for almost a decade, I think it's fair to admit my body doesn't absorb iron and protein from a vegetarian/vegan diet as well as I thought.

iron is really tricky and people sometimes don't know a lot about the digestion :( I've been vegetarian for 5 years, had anemia too and just last year I learnt a lot of things about iron and the digestion of it. I'm going to write a bit about it in case it helps: The thing that surprised me the most is: DON'T consume coffee, tea or chocolate before OR after eating (2 hours before and after), it won't let it absorb. Calcium and iron don't mix, calcium will compromise the absorption of it. Vitamin C is a really helpful so having a salad with lemon juice with your meals, could be lemonade too, orange juice and other vit. C rich fruits will definitely help iron absorb better. Legumes every day if possible, lentils are rich in iron. You must soak them the night before or 8-12 hours (I'd go with 12) before cooking them, this goes for all legumes except red lentils. When you're about to cook them, discard the water and with chickpeas and beans you can go an extra step and boil them once, discard the water again and boil them again.

My only clue to being iron deficient was an growing craving for ice chips. I had had exceedingly heavy periods for years, yet none of the doctors i had consulted ever thought of checking my iron levels. I read about a link between ice chip cravings and low hemoglobin on the Mayo Clinic website and asked to be tested. By the time i returned home after giving blood for the test, my doctor's office had left a message that i required an emergency blood transfusion because my blood count had decreased so much. I had no other symptom except feeling tired "in my bones" and craving ice.

This is ME! One other cause is Lyme. I was diagnosed with Lyme, particularly a live form of Babesia, which gets into the red blood cells and restricts blood flow. My broken shoulder from 10 months ago isn’t healing properly because of lack of blood flow!! Also I’ve been told I look “pasty”, with no color. The biggest problem is that I am extremely tired, and can’t drive far. You also mentioned dry skin, and about a month ago, I was in my daughter’s car that has black fabric seats. There were flakes of my skin (I thought it was dust!) all over her seats! My doctor is trying to do blood work, but I can’t drive there, so I keep canceling. She mentioned this, so I’ve been taking iron supplements, and I hope I can function soon! THANK YOU!

I experienced many symptoms of iron deficiency for so many years. My hair was thinning, my skin went from oily to extremely dry, vertical nail ridges, and MAJOR problems with no energy. I saw multiple Dr’s and no one could figure out what was wrong. They all did the common blood tests, but everything was normal. It wasn’t until a new Dr tested my ferritin that I got an answer. My ferritin was a 7! Wish I had known to ask for that test!
@cicir423
@cicir423 2 жыл бұрын
How did they treat it - just iron supplement? My ferritin has been below 10 for over two years. Several times the lab has not been able to detect it. One of my doctors says I need transfusions, but my other doctors say ferritin doesn't matter unless Hgb is very low. I do have symptoms; that's why it was checked initially.
@amyw3472

@@cicir423 if they won’t get you in for a transfusion, some of them will suggest supplementing. It usually takes months of supplementing though to get levels back up. It’s such a pain. You also have to be very careful not to go overboard if you’re not being monitored.

That's very odd. A basic blood test always checks ferritin levels especially if you tell your doctor your feeling extreme fatigue

Excellent information here! I've been gradually seeing some shifts of this over the last year or so. This is super helpful. My integrative doctor has recommended VerVita Black Cumin Seed oil. And, I believe two things I was doing may have played in as well: 1) Taking Vit D3/K2 liquid 10,000 IU AM and PM over the last year perhaps made my calcium too high thus blocking iron absorption; 2) Not soaking my almonds high in phytic acid which blocks iron absorption which I eat daily. Finally, some other bacterial/pathogenic infections I am working to clear with various protocols (Dr. Bob Beck's protocol of micropulsing, magnetic pulsing, ozone water and ionic collidial silver) are probably also a factor. I've battled staph and skin boils on/off since I was 12. This information is invaluable. Thank you!

Currently pregnant - 18 weeks- and experiencing almost every symptom except instead of itch, it feels more like restless leg syndrome. Taking an iron prescription to feel better soon. The sore in the corner of my lips/ mouth was the first thing to heal so far 👍 Thankfully I’ve figured this out in previous pregnancies so I knew to ask for an iron check and prescription. The key for me is to take the prescription with a glass of orange juice as vitamin c helps absorption and with a big meal that doesn’t have dairy. Dairy inhibits absorption. The big meal helps me not throw up the iron pill as it is hard on the stomach

I have struggled with anemia most of my life. A nurse told me that drinking OJ with iron pills will help your body absorb it because of the vitamin C. I try to eat a lot of beets too. Even with prenatal vitamins, I was very anemic during my pregnancies. I also have mitral valve prolapse which makes me more lethargic. I have always had hard cycles and bled a lot. Dry heaving, horrible intense pain, cold sweats were a normal monthly part of my cycles before having babies. Men have it sooooo easy. I can't wait for menopause!

Restless leg syndrome is also tied to low levels of iron. Not quite in the deficiency range for some - even just lower levels can result in RLS.

For me, my low iron was due to the fact that I was consuming gluten and gluten in my body inhibits iron absorption. Had very dry skin and fainting spells from time to time. Would also feel lightheaded if you squat down and get back up. Cutting out gluten and taking iron supps once in a while helps.

Same for me!! I never realized I had a gluten intolerance until I started getting acne all over my cheeks that I had never experienced, constant bloating and stomach aches, and constipation. (Sorry, TMI) In conjunction with that. Hair loss, dry itchy skin, extremely low energy, mood swings. I finally got Blood Builder and cut dairy and gluten for good measure. It is like night and day difference.

The best I ever felt was cutting out dairy and gluten. I went from wanting to stay home all the time and being exhausted and hiding from everyone to smiling and wanting to go out and wanting to socialize because of more energy. That lasted about a week and my husband brought home a pizza and I gave in and slowly went back to eating whatever. But I will never forget that amazing week of feeling my energy return which makes me think about trying it again.

When I had my knee replacement, a few years back, I had to give two pints of blood, as an autologous donation, with two weeks between the first and second pint. When I had my pre-operative lab tests performed, my primary care physician called me up and told me I could not go into surgery with my blood count that low. I explained that I had just donated my own blood, two pints in two weeks. She replied that it might not be enough, considering how much I would lose during and after surgery. Sure enough, my blood pressure tanked two days after surgery, and the two pints I’d donated in advance were not enough to bring my blood pressure up to normal. I went into surgery anemic from the autologous donation, and thus needed a pint of someone else’s blood to bring my blood volume, and my blood pressure, back to normal.

I've always struggled with low iron anemia because of heavy menstrual cycles. Tried to go the natural route, but my doctor was too concerned that my organs would start to shut down and put me on birth control. Though I don't love being on hormones, it has helped a lot and I'm now back to normal iron levels. The pica is real though, I craved ice like it was a drug!

Be sure to get a full iron panel - most ordinary blood test just do a basic iron. Like with vita b12. Some people are deficient in B12 but never know bc the usual CBC blood lab work up only looks at the B12 floating in your blood, NOT whether you are absorbing it or using it , "Active B-12" testing and a couple other kinds of B12 tests may be needed if ppl show clinical signs of B12 deficiency. Oh and do NOT take Biotin before a blood test - at least 2-3 weeks bc it raised certain results in thyroid, and Vitamin D and I believe one more but I forgot.
