Another tip for Dr Dray: Re: 14:52 - Beware (to her subscribers) of the propylene glycol, anecdotal, I know, but in me it caused treatment-absolutely-resistant dandruff about which a lot of MDs are ignorant. It was just very chunky dandruff (yuck) with zero itching. I tried every dandruff shampoo (Rx and OTC) for a year to no avail until I switched to foam. No more dandruff. So glad they ditched it!

I'm just recently come across Dr. Drew. LOVE everything she says. MAINLY LOVE that she never seems to try and sell you the one and only miracle that's going to change your life forever. You just get the "real" information. LOVE that she says a product might effect one person differently than another.

I used system 2, bought the small kit. The shampoo really deeply cleansed my scalp. Did not have problems with the mint. The conditioner was a bit too much for my scalp (I have oily hair), it really needs a long long rinsing to make sure it’s all off and my hair was always limp. The leave-in product in this case is a light mousse that disappears in the hair. It does not leave your hair crunchy in any way. All in all, I felt it helped slightly my hair thinning, and I’ve repurchased the shampoo to use as a deep cleanser once a week or so. More than that, realising that I have chronic anemia and starting taking iron supplements was the actual game-changer.

I've been using Nioxin since 1994 & i love it. I'm male 56 year old & i use system #4 & the scalp treatment as well as the hair booster. The nioxin styling products are the best. I've used other products but i always came back to Nioxin. They have 3D system with with Pro thick & it works great for me. I have very thin hair with bald spots & really like it. Thanks for sharing.

I started using Nioxin for major hair loss (System 6). Though I think I have hair for System 3, I decided because I had extreme shedding/hair loss to get System 6. It stopped the hair loss immediately and is still stopping it. I Love the hair kit and the Nioxin HTX 3D Intensive Diamax. They saved my hair. As someone who works in Pathology & tells the doctors what is what… I personally recommend this & not that Neutrogena crud.

I used various Nioxin products and systems for many years, and I was happy with results. However , in the last 1-2 years the product quality has changed dramatically for the worse. Now shampoo leaves hair dry, and frenzy, somewhat similar to clarifying shampoos which are very harsh

It’s also recommended for cancer patients! When I used it I got a lot more baby hairs, which I assumed was from it. Also the peppermint and menthol will kill lice😂 It can also help a little with scalp/ face acne but I would not use it more than once or twice a week

So I do use system 1. I completely see your point. I have noticed my hair is fuller, and the breakage and hair-fall is much less than my previous shampoo, and I think part of it is the Ph balance of the system. It does work for me. I don't suffer from hair loss per say, but I have noticed that the hair I do have is stronger and it seems or appears fuller. I really appreciate your videos.

I really love the kenra zinc shampoo, I have color treated hair and love it so much more than a drug store version of the same thing. The actual surfactants are more gentle than the ones used by head and shoulders and it is 1.9% zinc rather than just 1%. It does have a mild fraigrance, though, so obviously that's not appropriate for everyone.

I was treated for thyroid cancer last year and before going through that I had hypothyroidism meaning my hair was constantly shedding. I actually used the nioxin system to try and help. I didn’t find the shampoo or conditioner to be very effective but I did like the scalp treatment leave on spray and actually found it reduced the amount of hair I was loosing. I forgot to take it on a trip with me and that’s when I realised how well it was working when I wasn’t able to use it for 2 weeks. My hair has grown back now so I don’t use the nioxin treatment but I definitely found it useful, it didn’t do miracles or help to grow my hair but it did seem to reduce the amount of hair fall for me which was a massive bonus and saved me from a lot of distress in the shower.

@@EliasSanchez21 Hi, ah I’m sorry to hear you’ve been through the same. Because you’ve also had cancer you’ll probably be slightly over medicated to keep your TSH low to prevent the cancer coming back. I actually felt much better on a higher dose of Levothroxine and it definitely helped my hair! You should ask to see a copy of your blood results and push to get your TSH as close to 0 as possible . My hair is about 90% back to its original health and thickness now and no longer use the nioxin treatment but it definitely helped at the time but have tried other products over the years that I prefer. I had covid related hair loss last year so I started using viciscal supplements for hair growth, scalp oiling 2/3 times a week and scalp massages and within a week or 2 my hair stopped falling out and now I have so much regrowth! If you had surgery for your cancer recently remember that is a major trauma to your body and you need to take the time to look after yourself and try not to worry. Your hair will eventually grow back it just takes time and lots of patience. Be kind to yourself and try to reduce any stress as much as possible ❤️

I’m just seeing this reply. Thank you for the advice and kind words. I am currently at 275 of levothyroxine and it will probably still increase. We’re still trying to figure out my dosing. I’m 6’4 250lbs and workout a lot so my dose is probably a bit higher than most because of my size. The fatigue during this time is very annoying but has improved little by little. I don’t notice hair falling out anymore like before and I’m starting to have regrowth including my eyebrows. I’m making progress but the process is long and slow. I find myself wearing hats a lot to try and hide my hair because I don’t like how it looks compared to before when I had thick curls. But I’ve read that’s not good so now I’m just sucking it up and letting it breathe. Not only did my scalp get dry encause of this cancer issue but my face now suffers from being too dry and some redness also. Issues that I never had before. It will be a long road to recovery and feeling at least 90%.

I have an oily scalp and dry hair shaft and brittle tips that comes with flares of eczema. I used Nioxin shampoo and conditioner for over 2 months with no change to the overall health of my hair or scalp. I found the salicylic acid combined with the cleansers in the shampoo formula too harsh for my hair and made my tips break off. I use the Neutrogena T-Sal fragrance-free shampoo instead and it is has improved my hair and scalp health. I tried this product after watching Dr. Dray's clarifying shampoo vlog I watch her vlog's everyday and enjoy them! Thanks, Dr. Dray!

I have (heartbreakingly) experienced hairloss since age 17 (34 now) Over the years I have tried so many products and the only time I see a difference in the thickness of my hair is when I use Nioxin. It's very expensive here in New Zealand so that's unfortunate. I have been using spironolactone, mycrogynon as I have PCOS. I also use a simple anti-dandruff shampoo twice a week and with all of this, I can see that my hair is thicker. Still, it's not like a normal head of hair but it is thicker. After watching this, I might repurchase Nioxin. I don't think it regrow hair at all, but it does definitely make mine look thick and bouncy. Have a nice day Dr Dray😁

I used Nioxin for years because it was recommended to me for dry scalp and static in the dry Canadian winter. I have fine hair and have difficulty finding shampoo/conditioners that do not weigh my hair down. I saw a difference after only a few uses. Nioxin left it light and soft with no static or dryness. I only used it in the winter because it can be expensive. I stopped using it when I started covering my gray because the series for colour treated hair does not protect the colour, and now I know why. Although I still keep some on-hand and will use it to if static is bad. I also never have never used the leave-in third step because one and two did the trick.

I have personally used both System 2 and System 4 on multiple occasions and have found them helpful to thicken up the hair as four years ago at 22 my hair had thinned out so much. But these systems are more than anything just supplementing the treatment that is carried out in salons, which is if anything the product that actually works. The treatment can be applied every 45 days to the scalp. In my country at least, the treatment product cannot be bought for home use, not sure about other countries. I don't know if its ingredients are available on their website either.

As a hairdresser of about like a decade, I can share with you you, that you are not supposed to apply strong hair shampoo on your hair. I've observed hairlines of many individuals, and I noticed that people who were using strong shampoo cleansers generally had thin hair line. So I suggest only to use mild shampoo cleanser only. I personally use and recommend to apply littleextrra coconioon shampoo only. Also, do hot oil massage two times a week as it boosts circulation and promotes healthy hair growth.

I experienced a allergic contact dermatitis after using a hair thickening shampoo for about a month. First few weeks were fine, then suddenly - BAM - eczema and scarring on the areas where the shampoo would touch (arms, hands, neck, ears, upper back and shoulders. I am certain it was likely the peppermint in the product. At the time I thought peppermint was good to stimulate the scalp and promote hair growth, but I will never use shampoos with peppermint in them again as I am pretty sure I am now sensitized to that ingredient. 😞💔

Ive been using Nioxin system 2 for about 8 years. Like Dray mentioned, if we don't know what the type of hair loss were experiencing is, we can't treat it. So last week I went to a dermatologist for a scalp biopsy to determine the diagnosis for my hair loss and stop wasting progression of my hair loss. Good luck to all those out there that suffer from hair loss and like the doctor mentioned, a scalp biopsy is very helpful in determining and treating hair loss!

Hi Dr. Dray! I used Nioxin for quite a few years hoping to get more hair. I have fine color treated hair. I used the 3 part system, decided, the leave in did nothing for me after a year or so and continued using just the shampoo and conditioner for a couple of years until my colorist convinced me to use their brand of sulfate free shampoo. I eventually switched to Loreal strengthening shampoo and conditioner that is sulfate free for color treated hair for a few years now and am ultimately happy with my drugstore shampoo and conditioner.

I literally just found Nioxin a few days ago and I've been so curious about it! Crazy how you always make videos on products I just started looking at. I am interested in learning more about Peppermint and lavender EO for hair growth, I know you said that it doesn't help with the scalp health past helping relieve some itch... but I do know that a lot of DIY enthusiastic curly girls point to a 2014 and a 2016 study of comparing Lavender and Peppermint EO with Minoxidil on mice, with good results. I wonder if you disregard these study because they're only on mice and failed to be replicated in human trials or if you think the cost vs benefit of EO is just not worth it. I've been very curious on your thoughts on these studies.

However, I don't think it grows hair, don't think it claims to either. I love how concentrated the products are too. These are just my personal results. I love using it, have been for some years, not consistently though, and even if its not a cure and your hair goes back to thinning if you are not constantly using the leave in treatments, at least mantaining it like twice a week, helped me. I feel like the Night Density Rescue works the best, and it is a option that makes my hair loss better since minoxidil makes my scalp extremelly itchy and hot. The leave in usually have niacinamide, which I'm all for.

Also having alot of hair falling out. Quite a process working with insurance, family doctor, dematologist, and hair loss specialist to figure out if it's male pattern baldness or something else. If I had $1,500 to burn out of pocket I could just get the full array of blood tests done and take it to the specialist for review. But because I don't, I have to work with what my doctor and the dermatologist he recommended think I should do (instead of just testing for everything). So far, doc checked out my thyroid and that's about it. That came back okay, so the dermatologists advice was to "meditate to reduce stress," and "wait and see" if the hairloss develops the typical male pattern or not, to only then decide what to do -.- ugh

Hi Dr. Dray! Happy Thursday! Can you make a video about regular shampoos you recommend? I know you recommend the function of beauty shampoo but it’s quite expensive.... Also thanks for helping me with so many things Dr. Dray! I find it amazing that you take time of your day to educate us. Thank you Dr. Dray!

Function of Beauty is totally worth it! I've gone through so many drug store and high end brands that don't hold a candle to FOB! I never spent this much on hair care, but it lasts on average 3 months for me, and I always use a coupon code so it costs me about $19 a month if broken down that way.

$50 for a 16ouncr shampoo AND conditioner specially made for you with quality ingredients I’m sorry no, that is NOT expensive at all. But I also know that you can pay half the price for half the product and it’s crap quality... I understand people’s backgrounds and have a poor one myself. But I’m sorry I’m today’s economy function of beauty is not expensive at all..those bottle would last you almost a year if you are washing properly..$50 for almost a year of shampoo and conditioner is CRAZY cheap if you actually sit and do the math.

Thank you so much for all the honest, helpful information you give day after day! I have androgenic alopecia. My head itched really bad from minoxidil foam and had to quit. Have been on Spiro for 1 1\2 yrs with no noticeable improvement. Have been using Nioxin shampoo, conditioner and leave in scalp treatment because I thought the "system" increased hair diameter. Does it? Does finasteride work at all on females with androgenic alopecia? I don't have a lot if $. Do you feel a laser device is worth the investment? ~ Julie ~

Dr. Dray, I tried the shampoo and it did make my hair look fuller. However, I avoided the conditioner, as they usually leave my hair flat, and the leave-in products because of the probability of irritating the scalp.

My understanding with Nioxin is that it doesn’t necessarily regrow hair but it stops the hair loss from progressing further. I noticed light thinning and started using Nioxin system 1 a few years ago and it seems to have stopped my hair loss for the time being but nothing grew back. Also you have to be warned about Rogaine. Rogaine will actually cause hair loss for the first 3-4 months as it basically makes you shed your damaged hair so you’ll actually go more bald which freaks dudes out. Your hair will start to come back after about 6-8 months and you start seeing real results with a year, But if you stop using Rogaine everything will fall back out. So once you’re on the Rogaine train then its a life long process unless you get a hair transplant or move to prescription stuff.

Thanks for a great review of Nioxin! I've recommended it to my clients for many years and although it doesn't work for everyone, depending on the cause of the hair loss/thinning, it does seem to promote a healthy scalp which can encourage some growth. I've also used it myself for about 15 years. Thanks again for informative and useful content. ❤❤

Hello Dr. Dray! I live in Puerto Rico which is hot and humid year round, my scalp and hair stays drenched in sweat all day. I’d like to know what’s your take on a product called DRY It’s a topical spray used to minimize perspiration under prosthetic appliances. I read that it can help alleviate a sweaty scalp Which can damage hair and hair growth and I’m starting to notice some damage to my hair.

I really enjoy your videos dr. Andrea. I have a question ? I have a bowel disease that gets me very tired and I also have dark circles under my eyes inherited after my mom. I started using a caffeine based under eye regime from the Original. I like their formula, and thought it was helpful, however I stated to notice that I am getting small pimples under my eyes and even on top of my eyelids. I don’t mean comodones, but actual pimples, and I find that strange. Have you ever come across this? 45 y/o F, thank you

I see a liitle hair grow up. But i dont know if its after use nioxin... Also tried level 3 and 4 for colored hair. Didnt see difference to compare both. But what i know Its definety not for daily use. Its cleaned very properly meant left behind too much dry hair and scalp. Hair dye is shading very fast

Dr. Dray, I bought Quai Detox shampoo that is designed to ward off build up and dandruff but for some reasons I still get some flakes that doesn’t thoroughly clean. Neutrogena one makes my hair break easily. What are your thoughts on Quai Detox shampoo? I love their regular Quai Shampoo which helps keeps my hair from breaking and makes my hair so soft and manageable. The scent is amazing and purely vegan and cruelty free products.
