I’m an African American female going through this right now because of how I used to bun my hair. I would section my hair into five sections, put a rubber band around the middle section and then pull back and rubberband each of the other sections individually until I had one cohesive bun and it was all slicked down. That was me trying to make an effort to styling my hair and I ruined it by trying to make it look “neater.” It has started to grow back as I’ve learned to embrace my beautiful kinks and coils and just leave them be. Really great video. Like some other people in these comments not enough dermatologist know about African American hair care issues. Mine certainly didn’t have a clue what to suggest for me so I so appreciate you. ❤️❤️❤️

Military girls have the same issues! I just had to stop pulling my buns so tight and I also made sure I didn’t pull it back wet. That’s the worst. Damp or dry and then use hairspray to keep the hairs in place. I could always tell if I had it too tight because I’d get a headache. I’d go in the bathroom and redo it looser. Not losing hair due to a tight bun! Now in my 40s, I have some hair loss right where my bangs are. Might try the minoxidil foam and see how that works.

Thanks for the video Dr. Dray! This is very helpful. I've gotten my hair braided once and noticed those little bumps and irritation you were talking about along parts of my hairline. After I got the braids taken out I realized how bad it was for my edges, and they've slowly been growing back. I haven't gotten my hair braided since then (2-3 years ago) and I try to leave my baby hairs out and free when I style my hair. I also switch up my part a lot, which has been very helpful for me because I do like to wear my hair up and out of my face a lot! I also try to massage oils like castor oil into my hair (specifically the areas where my hair had broken off) every so often. These things have helped me see some improvement in the regrowth of y baby hairs, but I'm also a bit curious about the Rogaine you suggested. Thanks for the recommendation!

Happy Monday, Dr Dray! It never occurred to me that the alcohol in leave in hair products could contribute to this issue. Thanks for the info! I hope you have a wonderful evening! 💖

When I was in my early 20's I used to wear weaves and the lady always cornrowed it so tight that I would have a headache for the first few days. I also had those bumps on my scalp that Dr. Dray talked about. I have very fine curly hair ( I'm European) My hair in the temples has never gotten back to its normal thickness :'(

She’s addressing some great points here . I know women are just too rough with their hair and we often forget how fragile it is ! Ladies you do not have to put your hair too tight , it can cause headaches too . Wear bonnets if you’re sleeping , do a hair mask every week too! If you have curly hair try to detangle along with a detangler for less breakage. When you brush to rough you’re also breaking more hair than needed too. To avoid gel usage you can also use aloe Vera gel which is amazing if you want to save your edges and are also prone to break outs . If you do braids, just ask for them to not do them so tight and to not braid your edges away if you think they take too much in the front

VR headsets can cause this issue too. Like oculus quest 2. The straps are horrible for hair. Also you have the 4 pound or so headset concentrated to one area on the face and the straps rap around your temples scalp, crown, mid hairline. Depending on your hairstyle, how long you use it and what games you play, how tight you tie it and how fast you move it can definitley pull your hair out.

My cute long-haired Havanese dog developed Traction Alopecia due to wearing tight scrunchies on the top of her head; therefore, I no longer put her hair up like that. Luckily, the hair around her bald spot has grown out and covers it up for the most part. But now when I take her to the dog beach, I put sunscreen on the spot so she doesn’t get sunburned there. Note that I took her to a vet dermatologist who was able to correctly diagnose the alopecia after her regular vet was unable to; he thought it was an allergy issue. The derm prescribed some medication that she took for months which we hoped would bring back the hair follicles but to no avail. So for those of you with small fluffy dogs, don’t put their hair in tight ponytails or clips, or at least only on special occasions. 🐾 💗 😊
