Dr., you've done so much to help me better care for my skin-health and I can't thank you enough. Not only is my skin looking better than it ever has since puberty but, more importantly, I think your constant plea for everyone to use proper sun protection has made the biggest difference. I may not be l able to *see* any dramatic changes in my skin just from using sunscreen but, considering what sunscreen is for, I'd say that's a good sign. I'm in my early 20's and I lost my dad Thanksgiving night almost 1 year ago to a multitude of illnesses - but by far the most aggressive illness he had was skin cancer. I know genetically I'm already at an even greater risk for the same fate than people whose family history doesn't include skin cancer but I feel like I at least have a handle on the controllable factors. I've even quit smoking thanks to this newfound concern for my skin. The cosmetic help you've provided me is of course greatly appreciated, but I couldn't in a million years even begin to express my gratitude for the way you've influenced my overall health for the better. It's not every day a KZfaqr changes the course of perhaps the rest your life.

Thank you for this video. As a Canadian, I'm thankful that we have a lot of options here. From what I have read, UVA protection here is evaluated nearly identical to the US metric, but formulators have the option to have their sunscreens with a UVA circle to designate the UVAPF is 1:3 of the SPF (the EU standard). If you are based in the US, I believe Amazon Canada sends packages over there. Nearly all the sunscreens L'Oréal sells here have that UVA circle, I highly recommend the Garnier Ombrelle Sport SPF 60 sunscreen if you can get it. :)

I love that it protects from blue-light on top of being a powerful protector against all UVA rays. I wear it on its own without moisturizer as it’s super hydrating. A fantastic overview of everything a consumer needs to know before purchasing a sunscreen (in the US and elsewhere)! Super thorough! Thanks, Dr Dray. I think the only aspect you didn't cover was reef-friendly sunscreens--and you've covered that in other videos. As always, I appreciate the bibliography! Interesting too to see all this information in one place--you really see where institutional racism has affected photoprotection in dermatology. More than half of the Fitzpatrick Skin Type scale covers people of European heritage, and even now in the US we have more focus on protection against UVB rays (which mostly affects Fitzpatrick I-III) but not nearly as much data and prophylactics regarding damage from UVA rays or visible light (which affects everyone else). Hopefully this will change soon.

Dr Dray's really taught me everything about skin care! I started out with Anthelios Shaka Fluid, then I went on to Garnier's Ambre Soleil for both face (with glicerin) and for body and they were burning my face, especially the areas with psoriasis. Got Eucerin's one for sensitive skin and it works wonders on me! So glad that I can wear a chemical one ♥️ P.S.: Dr Dray, please look into the Autoimmune Protocol. I ditched all psoriasis conventional treatments long ago and this is clearing me up!

I hate the claims that mineral/inorganic sunscreens are better around the eyes.. in my experience, these burn and sting exactly the same (sometimes even more) as any other category of sunscreen. It's the inactive ingredients and the overall formulation that causes irritation, not the sunscreen filters themselves. You just need to find a sunscreen that you can tolerate around the eyes, regardless of it being mineral or chemical (inorganic/organic).

I saw a video about reapplying sunscreen and how difficult especially if you are wearing makeup on KZfaq shorts. The woman in question refused to do it for the same reason you mentioned and apparently, there is a solution in the form of a spray or powder. I would love to send Dr Dray the link to the video so she can analyse it but links don't always work on KZfaq. This is because I read the comments for that video and some people are complaining it doesn't offer protection, and some are saying it does.

@@thelearner9984sprays and powder are “secondary” protection. You HAVE to use a cream sunscreen, then make up, go to work and reapply a powder or spray sunscreen at lunchtime and at end of work day. I’m Fitzpatrick I and did that all my life (51 here!), I hate being sunburned. If you are indoors all day, this is more than enough. If you are working outdoors or on the beach you HAVE to reapply CREAM. Forget makeup. Powder and spray are only a light reinforcement of your protection, should never be used as a primary source, it doesn’t offer appropriate coverage.

You're probably not using enough - most people vastly under-estimate how much they need. And not reapplying frequently enough esp if you're in the water and/or toweling off. If you're in or near the water, sun magnifies/reflects and you can get way more burned than if you weren't by the water (or like snow would do something similar.)

Good day, Doc! I have a concern re: Acne spot treatment Will my acne worsen if I stop using acne spot treatment after using it for a month? The acne spot treatment I used was Salyzap. I don't have enough money to buy it again since it is pricey for me, so I want to buy another that is affordable, but it contains AHA/BHA. I hope you could answer this one. If it's okay. Thank you so much!

Dr Dray - how can we take our sunscreen on the go? Especially for those of us in warmer climates, putting a sunscreen in my bag or car will inevitably melt, which surely could negatively affect the formula (I’m guessing). What can we do?!

Thank for another very informative video. You mentioned you can use a powder over sunscreen , that sounds a great option to cover the white cast mineral sunscreens leave and to cover shine. My question is does doing this negate the effectiveness of the sunscreen used either mineral or chemical? You said in a previous video that sunscreen should always go on last.

Sunscreen can go under makeup. Id just recommend applying it thoroughly and maybe atleast 15 minutes before powder, so it has a chance to set up and prevent pilling (:

If anyone here is living in europe, we have so many exceptional sunscreens at the drugstore. The one I think is the best is the Garnier ambre solaire “anti-age” super UV sunscreen with hyaluronic acid (not the glycerin version!) This sunscreen is very perfect, it is also the only sunscreen my boyfriend will wear.

I really liked that one but sadly it would start to ball up on my skin after about 30-60 min. I think the Uriage bariesun spf50+ cream is quite similar while not balling up and offering water resistance which is a must for me during summer months.

Thank you so much for recommending the Neutrogena tinted mineral sunscreen- has been a lifesaver for me!! And when I wear powder over it I don’t get as greasy during the day. The one lasting problem I have with sunscreen is that every single one I’ve ever tried has that strong chemical smell and it’s a trigger for my allergies, especially when I’m wearing a mask. If they can ever make a good sunscreen that doesn’t have a strong smell I would have no problem wearing it 24/7!

I am at the Fitzpatrick level 3 and do wear tinted SPF with iron oxides since they help with hyperpigmentation. That's something I learned from Dr Dray a few years ago and all this time those are the only types of spfs I get. My main issue is that I do have melasma (sun mustache :( and its been so hard to "improve" the look of it, as I know it might not fully dissapear. It doesnt help that I've live in FlL now and heat, sun and humidity are very high here. I always wear a hat if I'm outdoors. If someone has a similar issue, can you tell me how to deal with my melasma and if theres something I can do to clear it a little bit at least

@janemuses3031
@janemuses3031 10 ай бұрын
I can relate as I have major issues now with melasma - a few minutes of sun (even with daily use sunscreens) and get a bumper crop (usually side of face/cheeks) which is so hard to fade. But Dr Dray did mention Heliocare tablets which seem to help. I also (based on Dr Dray and other derm vloggers) try to use tranexamic acid serum and do tretinoin and BHA (alternating them). I am not sure if all of these have helped together but it does seem to fade out my sun spots. I am resigned to never really completely removing them. For that, I indulge in an IPL session once a year and use a face shield to keep the sun out post op. All the best with your melasma treatment. I know it's such a bummer to enjoy the sun these days. I am in sun glasses, hat, slathered with sunscreen, long sleeves - all I need is a mask to complete the "contamination zone outfit" look.

I just yesterday bought 2 tubes of Alba Botanica fragrance free spf 50 sheer mineral sunscreen with niacinimide, squalene& vitamin e, oxybenzone and octinoxate free. It's broad spectrum and water resistant for 80 minutes. The 3 oz tube was $10 at walmart. I'm hoping I can tolerate it around my eyes. I've been using the Neutrogena mineral uv tint around my eyes and a chemical sunscreen on the rest of my face, but still getting some of the chemical suncreen in my eyes. I'm tired of the burning sensation in my eyes. I hope the Alba was a good choice. 😊

I just started using the Alba Botanica Sheer Mineral sunscreen about two weeks ago and I love it so far! I’m able to rub it all around my eyes and onto the eyelids, and experience absolutely no sting, watering of the eyes, or discomfort. Almost every other sunscreen I’ve used causes my eyes to sting and/or be hazy. It’s been an amazing product for me so far. The white cast is minimal, it has a slight sheen, and it does not dry out my skin like other mineral sunscreens. I hope it works as well for you as it does for me!

@michaeljack930 thanks for sharing your experience with me. I tested a little on my hand and it seemed to give more a glow than a caste. Last mineral sunscreen I bought was Bare Republic brand. It said light powder finish. I looked like a Japanese kabuki dancer. Pale as a ghost! 😆 This Alba Botanica will be an improvement. 🙂

@michaeljack930 I wanted to give you my update on the Alba Botanica sunscreen to see if you've encountered this issue. I apply the product after I let my moisturizer dry. When I apply it, it's like applying a blob of Elmer's glue to my face! I have to very aggressively rub it into my cheeks, etc, to get it to spread. The same goes for my arms. I've even tried without using moisturizer prior to application, and it is still difficult to spread. Once I manage to get it all over, it does go from white to clear and leaves a shiny cast, which doesn't bother me one way or another. But the application is brutal. I'm tugging at my skin like I'm trying to tear it off. Except for the application process, it's been ok. No stinging around the eyes.
