This is going to sound superweird, but this album also change some sexual preferences for me. You know, to have things left for the imagination, that kind of thing? This album changed me fundamentally. Then I discovered Images and Words, and then Tool and Karnivool, and my entire outlook on everything was just... changed.

DT's best album, as far as I am concerned. This song leads directly into Dance of Eternity, which I believe you have heard. It's the one with 100+ time signature changes. :) If you like this one, you may want to check out an earlier DT album called Awake, especially the tracks The Mirror/Lie

For heavier, more "ballsy" Dream Theater, try any track from Train of Thought or any of a few tracks from Awake. AMEND: I just remembered you did "This Dying Soul" in an extended track session few months ago, that's off Train of Thought. So you do have some experience with DT's heavier side. That said, they've got a lot more tracks from the 2 albums I mentioned, plus other heavy stuff from other albums, to keep fans of their more metal side very happy.

I understand what you mean by staying in the pocket. It's very organic in it's changes. LaBrie on records and LaBrie live are two very different animals. He also have problems with his high notes today a well, which is natural for everyone as we get older. Scenes From a Memory already were in a more comfortable range for him, than Images and Words and Awake. Jordan is their third keyboard player, previous were Kevin Moore and Derek Sherinian.

I know "prog" is a notoriously flexible genra, but to me this has always felt definitely progy (with a healthy dose of metal). Maybe what you are hearing is that this is part of a concept album/rock opera and I feel it definitely has some light musical theater elements to it, especially the vocals.

It's amazing to be able to experience this song for the first time again through your reaction Geebz, I gotta admit that for a while I was an enormous Dream Theater fan. I still love them! Mainly because of John Petrucci. One of my all time favourite albums is Images and Words and I have the guitar tablature book for it. Finally Free from this album really took me by surprise. It is a very dramatic and theatrical album. Spirit Carries On is perhaps one of the most beautiful ballads and guitar solos I have ever heard. ( That's just my opinion though) It took me a bit longer to appreciate their other albums. I think I have collected most of them. It's quite addictive when you first discover them. The musicianship and fantastic atmosphere is unlike anything else I've heard. Thank you for the reaction Geebz, I'm really happy you're still doing this :). You are actually one of the few music reaction channels that I find worth watching. You and Charismatic voice are my favourites. In the lyrics they quote " I remember i was told there's a new love, for each one that has died " - That is a direct reference to Metropolis pt 1 on the Images and Words album. I believe that phrase is also referred to in another DT song. I just can't remember which one.

At the end you mention Steven Tyler as an example of a singer who never had issues, but in fact he had surgery in 2006 and more recently had to postpone a bunch of shows because he's injured again. Singing rock and metal is akin to performing an extreme sport and when you do it professionally and go 100% night after night on tours, it's very hard not to get any injuries, unfortunately.

This was one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. My friends and I bought this album the day it came out and we studied every track before we saw them on tour. Little fact for you, they released a live album called Scenes From New York on September 11th, 2001. That was pulled from shelves the same morning because of the attacks on the US. The reason it was pulled is because the original cover art was was picture of an apple wrapped in barbed wire with the New York skyline (statue of liberty and the twin towers) on fire. It was a complete fluke that the album and the terror attack happened the same morning.

Yeah, man! Home is probably DTs heaviest intro/riff out of everything pretty much up to As I Am, and even though that song is quite chunky and heavy, you're right in that there's a more loose/organic vibe to the way this song is written and it always gets me bopping way more than As I Am does. 🔥🔥🔥 Really, this album was one of the highest points in DTs career, imo. It's probably less sticky than something like Images and Words, but they hit a peak of storytelling in their composition during Scenes that stuck with me in a more profound way than most of their other albums. I'm rambling, but long story short: I love DT. I love this era of DT. I loved older DT as well but this DT is the DT we're watching now.

Spot on. This is one of the last albums where the music felt truly personal and more visceral. Also, the singer damaged his voice via food poisoning in '94 or '95 and this album came out in '99 and he had still not fully recovered. He did a remarkable job on this album for not being 100%. But if you go back and listen to the '94 album Awake, particularly the track "voices", you'll hear what this guy was capable of pre-injury. Spoiler alert: any and everything

Earlier works !? This is Dream Theater ! Personally could never get into anything post Octavarium... ( even that album was a stretch )

Even though Mike is back in the band, there is a big shadow hanging over them and that shadow is James Labrie. At some point they need to let him go. Rather sooner or later. The vocal parts are so difficult that it is just impossible to make it sound good live if vocalist has completely destroyed his singing abilities. So sad 😢

I was noticing in the chat that nobody commented that on their very first album they had a different singer named Charlie Dominici. Also there were 3 keyboard players in the bands career. Kevin moore started and was replaced with Derek Sherinian when he left. They wanted to have Jordan Rudess, who was not available at the time. When he was available, Dream Theater kicked out Derek to replace him with Jordan.

James sounds really strong on this track aswell. Not a fan of every individual song on this album as its a concept album so some songs are just filler but this is definitly the best song on the album.
