I know right😀 its funny now looking back but i do miss those times when graphics floored you, it happened to me also when PS3 came out, first time playing motorstorm i could not believe how real it looked hah. I don't think it was lazy ports it had a lot to do with the technology being different on both systems. For example MVC2 and Soul calibur were made using the unique Naomi arcade technology. Not even 7 generations console in the future were able to emulate it perfectly. The current generation I believe have finally achieved it, but I may be wrong.

Yea most 3rd party games from that era both play and look better on xbox 👍 from now on I will use Retrotink 5x to get even better quality out of ps2 in this video series . It should mostly get rid of flickering on ps2 footage 👍 I think I'm gonna hold this series until I get it in my hands

Xbox is Dreamcast generation.... because microsoft kil DC uses winCE on DC and then birth Xbox. Sega America and Japan clash.

@@yosukerechain2000 Yes Dreamcast/PS2/Xbox/Gamecube are all in the same generation but Microsoft didn't have anything to do with killing the Dreamcast. Sega simply ran out of money. In fact they had a great relationship after the Dreamcast was discontinued because Sega continued releasing games for the Xbox and Sega's next arcade hardware was based on the Xbox and Xbox adopted Sega's controller layout and button namings.

@@KimTe63 When I was a kid I rented Alone in the Dark for PS1 from Blockbuster, so lots of memories of that version. I can't believe how sharp the DC version is, the detail is insane, as the OP said, nice touch of the breath of the PS2 version though and the mouth moving.

The saddest part is that the Sega Dreamcast could've definitely handled the breath effect and mouth movement, if they'd simply designed it that way when it initially released.

I don't think so because there was much more incentive for developers to optimize for PS2 since it is where the money was. The games look better on DC because it was genuinely capable of outputting superior frames both in terms of image resolution, and texture quality, this results in more vibrant - accurate - colors, much higher texture resolution, and a more enjoyable image to look at. The developers of Lemans really did try to make it as good as possible on PS2, but the HW is so obviously flawed, there is no point in damage controlling it. I could understand your point if some some games were better looking on DC, but the fact is that all these games look systematically better on Dreamcast.

I think the DVD player might have made a difference, but it's hard to say. The hype for the PS2 was unassailable, undeservedly IMO. Sega bet the farm on the DC, and couldn't withstand more financial losses.

Hmm I think if the Dreamcast lasted you would have seen the gulf in graphics between of them really widen. It may have had the VGA output as an advantage against PS2 but everyone was playing on standard crt tvs back then so very few people would be using the VGA hi res displays

Yea when you play on CRT TV with composite cables differences are way smaller. And tbh probably 99% of people did play like that back then 😁 but its just interesting to see how they compare with todays equipment on best case scenario 💯 check out my other episodes also If interested! @@RIPzippyshare It was. Sony's inflated numbers weren't achievable by most developers and head-to-head, the same game usually looks better on the Dreamcast. You can be a spec-whore or you can look at the actual quality of games produced.

well one problem at the time was that pretty much everyone just used basic CRT TV and with that differences are way different looking. Barely anyone saw back then Dreamcast at its best i believe

It's never the better hardware that matters. It's the games. The PS2 had way more of them. People bought it because it was the cheapest DVD player at the time. It sold more than any other console ever as a result... so it received more, better and longer support for 3rd party games than any other system. The PS2 library is enormous. It has the best light guns and light gun games, best sports titles, best racers with arcade-like link play, best fighters, best retro support, it plays PS1 games. It's magnificent. The 480i thing is a problem but mostly on ports that weren't designed for it. It certainly doesn't ruin Time Crisis 2 and 3. But you need a CRT monitor to get the best out of it. There is no HD flat-screen that can make 480i look good.

@@nonarKitten When people claim the DC is more powerful than PS2 they only seem to care about early ports.. Later PS2 games like Burnout 3 are invisable. When I get a decent scaler again, I intend to do a comparison of Evil Twin since I own both versions and because it's the only game I know of where the PS2 version came first and so naturally it's the better version.

It’s also worth noting the Emotion Engine was a frustrating chip to work with, according to many developers.

The ports weren't lazy. The PS2 had a unique architecture that was difficult to develop for. It also had half the VRAM of the DC, although at a much higher bandwidth. It took quite a bit of time before devs started to learn how to develop for the system proper with Sony offering better tools. It is ironic how the PS1 had the more direct and easier architecture versus the Saturn. Then both Sony and Sega reversed things with the PS2 and DC.

Haha yea they often do. BUT keep in mind this is using modern equipment to get best image quality out of original hardware. Playing on CRT tv differences are not as big

Nah. The SNES bodied the Genesis. Way better colors, bigger sprites... almost every single game that was on the SNES and the Genesis looked better on the SNES.

Its not that bad 🙂 you know PS2 was desinged with 480i CRTs in mind back in the day and it looked great there but nowdays with modern displays and best equipment it definetly is behind Image quality wise to other systems from that gen

It generally doesn't. But it does have good video options, with 480p on most games which makes it easier to get a good image on modern screens. Sega also used good colours in a lot of games that age really nicely. But when you get to games like Gran Turismo 3, God of War or Zone of the Enders 2, PS2 shows its raw power. All system from that era have some great features though.

There are many games where difference is not as big as in these ones but yea that 480p output is big deal especially nowdays
