▶ A B O U T D R E A M P R A G U E:
Ahoj! I'm Jen, Native Californian, living in Prague, Czech Republic for the past 9 years with my husband and our rescue dog Tobik. One fateful night, we drank a bottle of wine, threw a dart at the map, and bought one-way tickets to move our entire lives to the center of Europe! Everyday we learn something new, about Czech people, Czech culture, Czech history, Czech language and how to battle the Czech bureaucracy. Dream Prague started as a place to share what we learned with other foreigners living here.

After seeing your IG story about the tanks being deployed, it was comforting to see you convincing me to still come! 😆 I have always had this draw to Europe, even as a kid. Ahoj Jen, you look great and happy today, you always make my day... :-) Edit: In fact, it is quite easy to get gun permit, it is "shall" obtain, state has no say, like driving licence, you do the test and practical test, no hard criminal record, you have the gun licence. Czech have a lot of guns, but concealed carry in mandatory, so you do not see guns so often. As you live here, you can get it too, citizenship not required.

@@bmxrichard21 It depends on the person. There are 500 questions to learn, some people can do it without any problems, for others it is an insurmountable obstacle. Being clean, not having a criminal record, not being an alcoholic, not being a drug user, not having psychiatric problems? For some, it's a given, for others, it's a problem. Gun handling - they're much stricter than they used to be, and it's no exception that they throw out half the applicants... The shooting test itself is really easy. As I wrote, for most law abiding citizens, getting a firearms license is no problem. I wouldn't call it hard, but I wouldn't call it easy either, we don't hand them out like rolls or like Americans.

I’m no gun nut, but obtaining a gun license in the Czech Republic, all with concealed-carry permit, is about as difficult as getting a driver’s license. Arguably, that’s part of why the country is relatively safe, though it’s a combination of factors.

Well, even total idiot can have driver license, they literally give it to everyone who pays, so I hope obtaining a gun license is at least slightly harder. I believe that even orangutan could obtain driver license in Czech Republic.

I would be a poor fit for a gun license. I'm very glad the potential attacker doesn't know that. And I'd say among Czech gun license holders, the system helps a lot to have quite a lot of *responsible* gun owners while having minimal gun-crazed idiots armed.

Two less known Czech places straight from a fairy tale: - Giacomo Casanova lived in Duchcov Chateau for 13 years: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duchcov_Chateau - Sir Edward Kelley, the famous alchemist, was imprisoned by emperor Rudolf II in Hněvín Castle: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hn%C4%9Bv%C3%ADn_Castle (although the original castle was demolished after the Thirty Years' War, the current castle is a literal tourist attraction built shortly before World War I).

You feel like you're watching the country evolve because that's exactly what goes on. Sure, it wasnt always exactly a smooth process and there were some big problems along the road. However with every new generation we shift further away from the depressing nothingness brought to us by Russians from the east. We slowly realise where is our place and who we are, we rediscover our roots that were ripped to pieces by nazis and soviets, but never truly gone. Our culture, economy and society in general grows quite nicely and most importantly - people started to give damn about their surroundings, about the places and communities they live in - the apathy of life in communism / early post communist times is long gone. That is of course as long as you dont live in certain parts of Sudetenland, in which case you are conserned mostly about crystal meth.

Compared to Czechoslovakia times? some things did not change for the best... As a whole - sure there has been some progress, but than again Czechoslovakia was per capita richer than Spain and Greece both before and after Second World War. So... Prague just came back where it always use to be aside from the 90-ties. So the big question is did it really have to transfer like this? Through all the prostitution, drugs and murder of the 90-ties?
@vh5663

Yeah pre communist czechslovakia was rich and developed and remained like that until couple of decades of communism didnt gradually grind it to dust. This is an economy that was destroyed and rebuilt again in a few decades. Before communism we had wages +- equal to the austrian wages, after communism our wages were FIFTEEN times lower. Now its like twice lower. Its no easy thing to reinvent a country and obviously, many people used that oportunity to gain wealth in organised crime - the only solution would be do it the German way, which would mean to fire literally every communist judge, policeman, lawyer, politician, manager and just about anyone holding a public position. Things are so much better now, and not just in Prague, but quite all over the place - except of course certain regions mostly in Sudetenland, that suffered socialy and economicaly so much during the last century, that it will take forever to actually fix it.

@@vh5663 Sudentenland is also way better off than it used to be, it's just that it was really shitty compared to the rest of the country even back in commie times. But you can see a huge improvement already, especially in nature - the forests look way better than they did in the 90s.
@vh5663

@@Starkiller935 Well the war, the post war years and communism completely destroyed what made Sudetenland a prosperous region - one of the most prosperous in the country, actually. It does get better at many places though, sure, thats why I wrote about "certain parts of Sudetenland", not the entire region. Southern Moravia, Böhmerwald, Liberec region etc. are actually very decent places to live and the nature is stunning. I still remember some of those mountain forests in the 90s, forest that looked like a ww1 battlefield after the acid rains caused by the insane pollution of the communist industry. Thank god its over. :--)

Three times since January 2020 Jitka and I have tried to get the hell out of Dodge and move to Moravia, only to be stymied by circumstances far beyond our meagre control…Covid, a recalcitrant tenant, and now-the horror unravelling 400 km east of Jitka's hometown. This episode (amongst your many others) is helping to keep our 'český sen' alive. Many thanks to you and Honza for your hard work in producing this valuable resource. As an aside, I'd like to hear how the war has affected daily life for expats in Prague. Would that be an appropriate topic for your channel?

What place in Moravia did you choose? :) Jen already made a video about the war, anyway, for an English-speaking person nothing has changed. People are now sensitive to Russian/Ukrainian language, which few people recognize. btw. in the Czechia the war changed especially the mindset of the people and it can be seen in the laws, now covid is in the past because the war is more important.

Ahoj. Great video. I love Czech Republic for many of the same reasons. But I live in a panelaky in Ceske Budejovice 4-6 months of the year, when I am not in my "primary" residence in Cleveland, and I love the minimalism. I can leave all the clutter behind and live a minimalistic life in Ceske Budejovice, which I note does not make it into your videos. Dis Brno, but CB is a fantastic university town with amateur musicians jamming in the pubs and wonderful fish pond parks good for a stroll or bike ride. I like Prague, but I like it here better. I will keep watching and maybe watch some of the earlier videos to see if you get out of Prague.

Tip na další video: Jedno Vašich nejlepší videí bylo to, s hádáním významů idiomů. Podle mě by bylo hodně zajímavé video s hádáním významů přísloví. Několik tipů: Kdo chce s vlky žíti, musí s nimi výti/Who wants to live with wolves, musts howl with them. Pes který štěká, nekouše./Dog which barks dont bites. Dvakrát měr, jednou řež/Measure twice, cut once. Tak dlouho se hodí se džbánem pro vodu, až se ucho utrhne/So log people carry jar to bring water, than handle rips off. Košile bližší než kabát./Shirt closer than coat.
