(This is a continuation from PART 1: • Natural Building How-T... )
Lately, there's been a lot of building work going on around Dancing Rabbit (www.dancingrabb...)
So for this episode of Dancing Rabbit TV, we're taking the opportunity to provide a "how-to" natural building lesson, an in-depth video about earthen plastering techniques and application. Tamar guides us through every step of the way, showing how easy it is to make natural plaster from just a few simple ingredients, and both making and mixing the plaster, and then applying it to a natural home wall.

I know about Dancing Rabbit thanks to 30 Days. Such an interesting episode, great to see how the 'city slickers' became more accustomed to the traditions of the eco-village and how their judgment peacefully went away once they warmed up to the idea. What I'm sad about is knowing how the woman in this video, Tamar, passed away of terminal cancer in 2010. Reading her blog, documenting her journey with cancer. May she rest in peace. :(

I am so glad to have found your videos! I am making a straw bale shelter for an emu that I've acquired. I've got the bales up but was having trouble finding info on making earthen plaster. Your videos were perfect and I love how natural everything is that you do! Thank you very much! :)

@jerryaltman well you can use a high pressure baler and drive slow when you make them, that makes them nice and tight.

There was a company in Texas that made building panels out of compressed straw, but they went out of business in 1990.

With large enough roof overhangs, the walls are generally well-protected against the rain. That is usually the best defense against the elements.

bamboo as a live plant growing in the ground helps to keep the earth from cleaving. strips of bamboo added to the cob structure helps to keep the structure from caving in during a quake buzz

I think it would stand up pretty well as it would have a lot more give. Sure you'd have cracks in your plaster but that would be merelu cosmetic and easily fixed. On the other hand, I don't know if I'd like it in a cyclone prone area...would appear to be easily torn apart and that would be dangerous...bits flying everywhere.

To peste padure: the second plaster layer is ment to build out to shape, ie; to level the wall to a nice flat surface or to add sculptural elements. So the ratios of this mix will vary depending on how thick a build out is needed. Generally, just clay sand and draw are used in a second coat, and I like a watery clay mix that is a bit soupy that is very high in straw content, with a little sand. I want a mix that will go on easily, build out to thickness/shape quickly, and doesnt crack much. Hope this helps. Hassan hall (cobwallbuilder.com) lives at dancing rabbit ecovillage

I agree with SauronsEye -- I live in Tornado Alley and I'd want to know how well this building technique stands up to tornadoes before I'd build with it. Having said that, I'd like one more video detailing the second coat, and what you do to keep your plaster from melting when it rains. And Neuroid is right -- Tamara is super-cute!

Excellent post. I don't understand though how the straw bails don't catch fire through decomposition? Also do they don't decompose and settle over the years? Thanks for the info!

nice. looks like lipay that they do/used to use on the walls of village houses in Trinidad and maybe India. That's made of cow dung, straw and mud mixed. What is this made of?
