DREDD was/is a comic book with a huge backstory. The Stallone movie was a glitzy interpretation of the original stories with a feel similar to the Flash Gordon 1980 with Sam Jones. This movie is more grit and less glitz, and in my opinion more faithful to the original material.

the comic has its serious moments but the stallone one was actually pretty close to the campy future shock world in the comics. this movie is not the universe that has the dark judges or crazy hillbilly cannibals or an AI starting a cult among many other goofy plots and characters. also the world of megacity one is captured WAY better in the stallone movie..this movie...i can see the SKY. i feel like if you are trying to create a megacity and you can clearly see the sky at all times you have failed.

@@willwilliamson9580 the Stallone movie had some great visuals, but they misused certain characters. Case in point the ABC warrior. A wasted element with a version that looked like a Generic Hammerstein, without the others. Would have been better if they did more than just make it a mindless henchman. Yeah, they had Mean Machine and the Angel Gang, but that was a 10 minute segment only. There were 3 sets of enemies in the film, when it should have focused on just one or two central antagonists. So... Visually impressive, but shallow, with generic villains that never got properly fleshed out.

@@willwilliamson9580 That's what I've always said about this movie. It's way too serious. It never feels like the Judge Dredd comics or universe to me whatsoever. Yes Mega City one in 2000AD is often shown as a colourful, ridiculous and insane place. More like the Stallone version. But through all of it there's been Justice Department, The Law and Dredd is ahem....The Law distilled and embodied. That and what an average day for Dredd, Anderson and the other Judges is like. Is what this film captured so well.

That's really interesting. I didn't know that. I only read one thing with Judge Dredd and that was a Batman/Judge Dredd comic crossover a long time ago. Think it was in the 90s. The only thing I remember is that Dredd somehow crossed over to the DC Universe, into Gotham City and when he saw Batman's villains, he was like, "OK, THIS place is cuh-RAZY." Paraphrasing, obviously. 😁 Considering how hardcore Dredd and Mega City One is, him saying that speaks volumes.

Another great reaction, your such a great reactor.. Trivia In a recent interview recollecting on this movie, Karl Urban said he refused to smile or take the helmet off at any point during the movie's filming or even in between takes. He spoke with an American accent and kept a scowl the whole time and stayed serious to keep in character. At one point, a cast member made a joke causing laughter on the set, and Urban gave him the 'Dredd' stare, prompting the person to immediately apologize.

Pete Travis is "officially" credited as the director but according to a lot of the crew (and I think even Urban himself) think of Alex Garland (who wrote the screenplay) as the director since he stepped in and helped on a lot of the directing. Which definitely tracks because the stuff Alex Garland has directed so far feels very similar in tone to Dredd. Alex Garland is an amazing dark sci-fi director (Ex Machina, Annihilation, Devs).

This is based on a very long-running comic series in the UK that runs in a zine called 2000AD. In the comics, Dredd and Andersen have a long history of working together and more than once she has saved the world. FYI - she is a telepath as in she can read minds, an empath can only sense emotions. This great film had the terrible luck of coming out the same summer as Avengers so it got lost. For me this is the best Dredd ever done and one of the top comic movies of all time.

I love the original for the spectacle of it, and the inclusion of an ABC warrior, but this is so much better. From the uniforms to the depiction of the blocks they got so much right. Not the bike though. And I admit I was dubious when I first heard who got cast as Dredd (don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Karl), but I was so wrong. Karl Urban nailed it. As for being based on the earlier film, the comics go way further back. I really wish i still had my old copies of 2000AD. Thanks for the video, was fun to watch and remember a good film.

Yay, so happy you enjoyed this movie!...🙂 Even in 2012, Dredd was ahead of its time. Great story, Fantastic set and sound design, great soundtrack, visually stunning dystopian backdrop etc. I put this movie in a similar category as Watchmen, where audiences at this time simply were not ready of this ambitious style of movie. Like I mention before, RoboCop was loosely based on the Dredd character from the 70's and 80's comics. Karl Urban embodied this role (MUCH BETTER than Stallone ever did) and yes, he absolutely LOVES this character; and was one of its biggest champions when it was released on DVD. Unfortunately, Dredd did not do well at the box-office due to bad marketing from the studio ahead of its release. However, when buzz started picking up, the DVD sales did HUGE numbers. But to answer your question about a possible sequel, there was a Dredd series in development from Amazon titled, Dredd: Mega City One. But with Karl's time tied up mostly on the insanely popular show, The Boys, development on the project has unfortunately come to a standstill. My hot take on the matter is that Karl will eventually come back to do another Dredd movie, (or series?) when The Boys decides to end in another couple of seasons. Like I said above, he absolutely loves the character and feels there is a lot more story left to be told in this world. Loved your reaction...you have great energy and enthusiasm. Keep up the great work! 😊

Anderson is super powerful in the comics. She becomes one of the best judges they have and plays an integral part of saving the city numerous times. This was a great take on her beginnings. Her and Dredd don’t get along too well. He doesn’t like her playful attitude and she doesn’t like his stick up his ass over the law. But they’ve still got mutual respect for each other as the top judges in MC1. Urban is also a Dredd fan. Since he was a kid. He even said there was no way the helmet was coming off in the film or he’d walk. Respect.

One of the great things about this movie is it gives such strong roles for women in Judge Anderson and Ma-Ma, without making the male characters look weak or stupid. Plus an actual character arc for Anderson. She starts the movie as a clueless rookie, but by the end, she's born-again hard, instead of just being perfect at everything from the word go and making her male counterparts look foolish. That's a thing that filmmakers used to be able to do before 10 or 15 years ago. I don't know if they still have that talent with the utter tripe that Marvel and Disney vomit out on us on a regular basis...

Firstly If you want another Dredd style film I highly recommend "Judge Minty - A Judge Dredd/2000 AD fan film2 it's 27 minute long and does an amazing job at bringing the comic to life going for more of the comic book designs. Really do adore this film. Like many people have said this film is based on the Judge Dredd comics. The character of Dredd first appeared in 2000 AD 1977, which is a British weekly anthology comic following different characters set within a shared universe known as 2000 AD. He was younger and much smaller in his first appearance, one amazing detail is Dredd ages in real time with the comic books so over time he got older and older until now he's an old man. Funny that you mentioned like Robocop has the film was heavily inspired by Dredd, The Delta City model from Robocop 1 looked like Mega City One from the comics. Robocop for me does a better job at highlighting the Satire of the 2000AD but this film is still amazing. Most important aspect is that they nailed the characters unlike the Judge Dredd film featuring Sly where Dredd removed his helmet revealing his face like 10 minutes into the film. Dredd is well known for never revealing his face and the times he does remove his helmet his face is 90% in darkness so we don't see it. But I will say that the 1990s Judge Dredd film does a much better job at transferring the visuals of the comic to live action from it's amazing Mega City One to the vehicle designs and a certain Robot it nailed the look of the universe while Dredd 2012 lacked in this department for Budget reasons of course focusing on a smaller scale which worked out in the end. I like the gritty tone of this but would love to see more of the wacky side of the 2000AD universe, similar in tone to the Fallout games or The Boy it's Dark yet filled with Satire and fun wacky characters along with some really cool places like Texas City filled with massive statues of Cowboys and buildings with Cowboy hats. They could 100% transfer to look of the comics over into a film today with a good budget, Star Wars has such a unique look and feel and it still holds up in 2022 in shows like Andor without looking silly. Shows like Peacemaker and The Boys are the perfect style tone for a Dredd show. I think when people say this film is more faithful to the original material I think they're referring to the characters but not the visuals or the world etc. For me 1990s Judge Dredd came closer in these areas while Dredd was more true in terms of characters, combined these two together and we'll have one amazing Dredd show or film. It's very Tim Burton Batman vs Nolan's Batman one is more comic book inspired while the other tries it's best to be grounded and that's kind of how I feel about Dredd just whatever style you prefer.

The Raid has a bit of a dark backside to it - back when work was being done on Dredd, the guys who would make The Raid managed to get a copy of the screenplay. They basically stole it and did it in half the time due to not needing the special FX, and when it came out it was _before_ Dredd. So people thought Dredd ripped off The Raid when in truth it was the other way around.

The best line in this film is - "One million! One million? You have a problem with a Judge. Do you know who he is? No... I DO. One million!" It tells you everything you need to know about how badass Dredd is even amongst his peers. This is also one of the rare occasions where they invented a villain not from the comics and they didn't suck. Mama is a cool villain for this urban setting. If I remember correctly; Dredd 3D was a low budget (filmed in South Africa) based on the British 80s Comic Book (2000AD) Character Judge Dredd. Hollywood tried to get the rights, failed and made a rights-free version called "ROBOCOP". They eventually secured them for a 90s Sylvester Stallone vehicle that had a big budget, very loose with the mythos, and is widely regarded as a "GOOD-BAD" Film. Dredd never removes his helmet, ages in real time as long as the comic is being published, and it was Urban who really wanted to stick to the roots of the Character. There was a few reasons why it did poorly at the Box Office: Limited run with 80% of screenings shown in 3D theaters, people were a little hesitant due to the prior 90s film being cheesy and loose with cannon, the very similar plot to another film (Despite Dredd being filmed first) called the Raid. It's a pity, as touted sequel was meant to have Dredd's nemesis - Judge Death and the Dark Judges. There has been many a rumor for 10 years, regarding a Karl Urban return to a MEGA CITY ONE Series, only for either a lack of investing, WOKE written scripts, and usurping of ownership/producers to get in the way!

the comic is very campy and cheesy. megacity one is also very weakly represented in this movie, it should be TOTALLY PACKED with buildings. this looks like dc suburbs. do you think villians like the dark judges could exist in this more recent movies? no way, but they would fit right in with the Stallone version which actually was very comic accurate.

KeviNation have you actually read the comics? They've always had plenty of campy and cheesey. I've been reading them since I was a lil kid in the 80s and as bad as the Stallone movie is, it still feels more like the comics to me whereas as decent as this film is, I never feel like I'm watching a Judge Dredd film when watching it. I've been reading the Dredd/2000AD comics since the early 80s and this film absolutely knocked it out of the park. Karl _IS_ Dredd, imo. He took on an iconic role and made it his own. And frankly Olivia Thirlby's portrayal of a young Anderson was perfect. Hard to believe this movie is over ten years old now.

As other posters have mentioned 'Judge Dredd' is a comic property created in 1977 by writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra (while editor Pat Mills came up with the name.) It has been running non-stop since then and so now has a huge back story which contributed to the film having such rich world-building. I believe there are video games. Dredd has continued to age in real time in the comics - starting out aged around 30, but now about 75!

He's (about to turn?) 84 now - he and his brother Rico were decanted from the clone tanks as 5 year olds in 2066, the current year in the comics is 2144/5. Over the years he's had several rejuvenation treatments and several organ replacements with cybernetic implants (his eyes were the first to go that way, quite early on).

Yes, there was a rights issue with Dredd, as you already know it's a comic, but a British comic and the international facet made the rights blurry. Due to this not being a successful movie in theaters, the studio hesitated too long to make a follow up. They have settled the rights issue and Karl did indicate that they are trying to move forward with Dredd 2, but that was a year ago and I haven't heard anything else. It might be lost in development Hell if they are having a funding issue. edit - This is the best screen version of Dredd, which many probably already stated, and Karl had a blast. He's a fan of the original comic. The ONLY problem, is that the comic Dredd would have failed Anderson for losing her gun.

Dredd was filmed in South Africa, I believe Johannesburg, don't remember since its been a few years. The screenplay was leaked during filming, and another film called The Raid, was able to copy the screenplay and film and release their film in just two or three months, while Dredd was still in post production. It hurt the release of Dredd, since people assumed Dredd took ideas from the Indonesian film, when it was actually the reverse.

Judge Dredd is a character in the British SciFi comic 2000AD (there are so many stories & characters that would make great movies). The comic was first published back in 1977 and Dredd has been a character since Issue 2. In the comic, we never ever see Dredd's face, because he is supposed to be the faceless embodiment of the Law (hence one of his catchphrases "I am the Law"). Karl Urban is a fan of the character, and was happy to NOT reveal his face in the movie (a failure of the '95 movie), because he knew it was important. There was also a 2003 Judge Dredd video game "Judge Dredd: Dredd vs Death", which featured the battle between Dredd and his undead nemesis Judge Death (a Judge from a parallel universe, where life itself was declared illegal). Also, Robocop was heavily influenced by the Judge Dredd comics.

Just as I was getting ready to wind down for the night you Blind Side me with this one. So couple quick behind the scenes facts for you since I know you live for them: first off, Dredd is actually a British comic character from the 70s that was adapted for film due to its more aggressive, edgier nature. Unfortunately back then they couldn't make a film without a big star attached which is how we ended up with the Sylvester Stallone version. As for Karl Urban, he's actually a New Zealander but uses an American accent for this film and unfortunately for you, to stay true to the character like the comics, he keeps his helmet on the entire time but it rectifies one of the main criticisms of the Stallone version. The film was shot in South Africa and Urban did his own riding in the opening chase and tried to stay method to not lose his approach. Lena Headey shot this in between seasons of Game of Thrones and a fair amount of the tattoos shown are actually hers that she chose not to cover up or even had enhanced through makeup for the visual flair. The slow-mo effect was used in trailers to heavily pitch the film as a 3D action thriller, although unfortunately at the time 3D films had a serious hit or miss record. Unfortunately for you the director has gone on record stating that there are no plans to make a sequel however before the pandemic, there were discussions of expanding the world of dread by showing other cops and Other Stories of Mega City one. I believe discussions are currently stalled. And there's probably a few more tidbits of information but you caught me while I was half asleep. Anyway thank you for the surprise reaction, Angel. 🖤

Brian, you never fail! Thank you! :) I didn't know he was a British comic character...or that the decade was the 70's.... you know that just makes me love him so much more. haha Ohhh, yeah; that makes sense why it had Stallone in the old one. And WHAT? cool! She shot this in between takes of GOT? Plus wanting to leave her own flare in there for the "Ma-Ma" character? Very, very cool...I already admired her dedication to characters, and her energy she brings to every role, so that just increased that admiration even more. :) Oh, okay; that really makes sense for the slow-mo, especially when this came out. I wish I would have known how good it was. I missed out! If a movie was done correctly and well in 3D (during the big phase of them), I enjoyed it...but some were hit or miss for me, like you said. I think I would have liked this one in 3D. The others I liked in 3D were Avatar and Tron: Legacy. They made the movies even better imo, than they are not in 3d and in theaters. I hope they at least bring Dredd back to the big screen at some point so I can see it there! Aww. Well, even though there won't be a sequel with Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby anytime soon, I WILL be holding out for the expanded world that you mentioned. If done right (like this movie), that would be interesting and fun. Thanks again, Brian, and thanks for staying awake to share all of that!

@@AngelGroves oh yes, the "dark days of 3D" films. The main issue was the fact that outside of Avatar and a couple other films, most films weren't intended to be 3D and were only converted post-production, which is why you saw that inconsistency in quality but as always, it was really the studios who wanted to see if they can make a few extra bucks off of it and had to learn the hard way that unless you're planning it from the ground up as a 3D film it's not worth the hassle. I'm glad my wealth of random cinematic knowledge came in clutch again for you and now you have me scanning everyone in the background for made in Georgia movies and TV. As always, Anytime Angel 🖤

I listen to the Dredd soundtrack all the time. It never got a sequel and they even tried to get a show together, but it fell through. (Mega City One) I would have loved if there was a sequel to this. It's so good. Karl Urban has openly said that he would love to return to the role, but as Dredd didn't make enough money, nothing has come of it. The film's marketing was pretty poor. I didn't even hear about the film until it had already left theatres. Plus, I was pretty depressed back in 2012 around the time this released. The Stallone version of this, (Judge Dredd) actually is pretty good in certain ways. A lot of the characters from the comics make an appearance in that film. A lot of it isn't super accurate to the source material, but done in a fairly entertaining way. That film definitely has its issues, but I find it to be one of those guilty pleasures. I really liked that they didn't shy away from showing the same brutality that's in the comics. I think people miss that violence can actually serve to ground a film even further. This could have been just another kind of goofy comic book adaptation, but no, they went there and I love it. I've honestly never seen another movie where the death of a villain is made so beautiful. Whenever you get so into the film that you start flailing your arms always puts a wholesome smile on my face, because it's so relatable. lol I get really into movies too. A question from me to you, because you seem like you've enjoyed and watched some of the films I grew up with. Have you ever seen The Indian in the Cupboard? Very good film that I watched as a kid. If you haven't seen it, you should. Dredd > Judge Dredd for sure.

Ohhh... that's so awesome you listen to the soundtrack as well. :) I'm sad they didn't get any type of sequel together, but I'll still be hoping for SOME extended world in the future..if done right, like this movie. I agree completely with her statement about how the violence was portrayed and how that can impact a film and resonate with the audiences. If done right (which, again, they did), it makes such a difference. Especially, since learning this is actually based off comics. SO cool and makes so much sense. Right?? Ma-Ma's death was truly beautiful...in my unedited version I go on and on about how she looks like this Angel from this movie I watched tons when I was a kid, where an Angel falls into a swimming pool in a guys backyard. I only mention it a little in the YT edit. But I thought it was really, really beautiful. I want posters of multiple scenes in this movie. It made my heart so, so happy when I just read your question about The Indian in the Cupboard... ones of those I put on so often, I'm surprised I didn't mess up my VHS tape. When it came out, I wanted the VHS you could get that came with an actual cupboard..or at least I thought it did, but the plastic case was just shaped like the cupboard. lol It was still cool. I wanted to have that cupboard/ power so badly, though, when I was little. Who didn't?!? Great recommendation.
