Wet sand the parts to knock the shine off them with very fine wet’n’dry before you put the clear coat on otherwise it won’t adhere very well and may peel off after a few months, (don’t worry the clear coat will cover all the ultra fine scratches, you’ll be amazed just how much it does) also wet the floor down with water to stop any dust etc blowing up in the air and settling on your painted parts 😀

Just mentioned to someone else about dreaming of wet sanding before the gloss and going too far, turned into a nightmare

I now like the baby blue a lot (after originally thinking "WHAT IS HE DOING..??"). Can't wait to see how this comes out after you put on the clear coat - which I encourage you to do (looks sooo much better and can be easily buffed later if you e.g. scratch the tank while riding). One tip though: you should color sand the clear coat to a mirror finish. You won't regret it. Wet sand with 600-1000-2000 grid paper, then final polish with cutting compound. You can do it manually, it's not too much work on tank and seat. The bike will look absolutely killer.
@forthebold
@forthebold 6 жыл бұрын
Have faith in the colours, ha. Strangely enough I had a dream last night of wet sanding in preparation and going too deep.
@woodywoodpecker2708
@woodywoodpecker2708 6 жыл бұрын
I agree there is a fine line between one's dreams and one's nightmares.But you'll be fine. As suggested by markdeedee below, wet sand down the paint very lightly with 1000 grid paper just to dull up the surface. Then put on three coats of clear (first coat very light) with enough drying between coats. You'll end up with some orange peel effect in the clear but can sand it out easily with the 600/800-1000-2000 routine. The fine grid won't burn through the clear. Make sure you don't push too hard when you sand it down. Don't use your hand/fingers directly on the paper but put the sandpaper on a light and flexible pad. Believe me, it's a lot of fun and not dangerous at all. There is also a gazillion videos on KZfaq to show you how to do it.
@forthebold
@forthebold 6 жыл бұрын
Ha, show's I'm thinking too much about the bike when I dream about it. I've done this technique before on the original colour of the bike, back when it was orange and grey, sanded it with 2000 at the end and then buffed up with polishing compound, it does work well, very scary half way through but does polish up fine.

Andrew Lynch no 100% the previous paint. Tried different tests etc. It's happened to me before. The rattle can paint just doesn't react well to any kind of solvent and cellulose paint does shrink.

Commenting this only because it relates to the cowl; how tall are you? I’m 6’4” and struggling with seating position for my CB400-4. What’s the best cowl to go for if you’re a taller gent? Or is it worth making one myself?
@forthebold
@forthebold 6 жыл бұрын
I'm 6'4. The seats I tend to build are all roughly the same length. I think what makes a difference is the bike frame. The CB750 customer is taller than me and the GS550 and CX500 frames would have been too small for him.

The plastic itself is fine, it's only wherever the old previous paint was, I've noticed that rattle can paint does the same for fuel when spilt on it. Horrible stuff.

Does he read these comments? If so, I have an interesting idea. I have a 2009 KX450F, and I want to build a bobber out of it using the mainframe and a custom subframe. do you think it's possible?
@forthebold
@forthebold 6 жыл бұрын
Ethan Stevens I've never seen it done but doesn't mean it's not impossible. You'd have to be one good engineer and aluminium welder. Look at new shorter forks to get it lower to the ground. Personally I'd choose an easier bike for one

Nice,nice,nice. -- I Love the GS 550 and hate myself selling one in the Late 80‘s. But why you did not protect your shop while spraying. A cheap platic foil would protect all the fine equipment in your shop from this fine collored fog...?
@forthebold

Thanks. The overspray is only like dust, dries before it hits the ground, if there's anything left over a light dust gets rid of it, the bikes are covered.

Looking good! The cracking paint is cross contamination. Next time try a stripper or paint thinner cleaning before you start priming...
@forthebold
@forthebold 6 жыл бұрын
I did think that originally, and I do clean everything with a tack cloth and degreaser first, but after trying a few samples a few months ago it's the rattle can paint that affects it. If I try and put stripper or thinner on wherever the rattle can paint is it just turns to like a tacky glue like substance.

Sumit that’s the style of the fuel tanks used. So the CX500 and CB750 tanks slope down. The GS550 doesn’t. If you look at the frames of all from the side they’re straight by raising the height of the rear and front shortened.
