The Stone Crafting Workshop

Күн бұрын

My missus picked up a lovely piece of Carnelian Agate on our local beach, probably too thin to rock tumble but maybe a good candidate for rock carving? I decided to make a small piece of jewellery as a gift for Marie for Christmas.
I have been trying to carve the Agate pebbles for almost two years with little success, the stone is just too hard! I had to improvise somewhat on the tools but this time I think I cracked it! I used the dremel attachment on my Ferrex mini bench grinder with diamond burrs, but the real star was the small Angle-grinder I used as a carving tool!
I have tried to show each stage and the tools I used.
Enjoy!

That is such a lovely leaf! You worked with the curvature of the stone to make it look like it just fell from the tree in October. I’m sure your wife will love it!

Steve that was great.. I have some dremel's and a mass of different bits for them I used back in the day for delicate wood work.. And I have a big jar of agates. I think once the kitchen remodel is done I will "have a go" as you Brits say.. What fun.. Now I just have to find my dremel's 😊

@@thestonecraftingworkshop7490 Yes getting great polish on these hard stones is difficult. Working with that tiny round bit about a 1mm thick that you used can have give a nice polish on quartz but it's very time consuming. I'm interested to see what you come up with. I do most polishing by hand, I also really enjoy the process so it's not a necessity more of a hobby.

Very nice job. I look forward to carving my first stone. Would you recommend starting on a softer stone? And can you tell me what the name of the different dremels you used are? Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge.

Hi Steve! What RPM do you recommend on the dremel? I get scared to turn it up because of how loud mine gets, even though it's not even close to "Max RPM" recommendation that came with my dremel. Is higher better? Maybe it becomes easier to carve. But I don't feel safe hehe For example, my dremel goes up to 50k RPM, but I never go beyond 20k. Recommended max seem to be 35k. Thanks for your videos. Great results with a cool stone. I like how the light shines through it, it almost looks like candy.

Dremel type tools are really not very powerful, so if you have the thing turned up to full speed then start grinding and lean on it, it will slow down with the friction. However I seldom use at full speed, speed does not always make the work quicker, with abrasive bits too much speed can make the tool slip rather than cut and perhaps even burn out diamond burrs. Depends a lot on the type of stone and the type of burrs you are using. The only answer really is practice, in time you will get a feel for what works best. I would suggest practice on a spare piece of stone, start at slower speeds then quicken up bit by bit till you feel comfortable and the bits are cutting well. Best of luck!

Hi Audra, I have two ways, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hqxnf5N0zJnJYKs.html and kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nseAlLtk1drFmX0.html, one way provides more water at slightly higher pressure, good for feeding a polishing disc and the other way is gravity fed ideal for dremel carving. Hope this helps!
