Rather than using pins, I baste my Dresden down several inches back from the edge on the background using the largest stitch on my sewing machine. It is very easily picked out after hand sewing the Dresden down.

The little Clover applique pins are nice to use, but I wonder if you have ever tried Glue-Baste-it. It eliminates the pins and really nicely tacks the fabric to the backing fabric. It comes in a nice applicator bottle. It can be a bit pricey, but I have done the exact same thing with good old Elmer's Glue. Glue it down, let it dry, and then do my hand or machine applique. No pins to catch one's thread on! Nice instructional video. Thank you!
