Travel video about destination Dresden.
Dresden is the capital of the German Free State of Saxony and a major centre of culture with a remarkable history. Although almost completely destroyed at the end of the Second World War and for many years hidden behind the Iron Curtain, today the city shines out in all of its former splendour. As a centre of art and science, Dresden Castle contains a number of collections that are well known throughout the world and draw international visitors to this most ambitiously-conceived and successful project. Close by, the stable courtyard is the world's oldest original Tournament Arena of its kind. The Tuscan-arched arcades originated in the Renaissance period and were used by spectators during various tournaments and entertainments. Count Brühl, a follower of Friedrich August The Second, was presented with the Elb Wall as a gift and had a mile-long walkway built for the nobility. It is known as The Balcony of Europe and is located ten metres above the banks of the River Elbe. Meissen is well known for the porcelain of the same name. In the Meissen factory each aspect of the manufacturing process can be observed, along with a presentation of the history of the famous porcelain. The centuries created such beauty that Dresden has been described as The Venice Of The East and Florence On The Elb. Today, the city is a harmony of both architecture and landscape, a brilliant work of art!

Visited Dresden about 1 month ago (mid-October 2015); great place to visit. They did a fantastic job rebuilding the city. Highly recommended (by me, at any rate). RE the comment by mils5000 concerning nazis he's completely off base. The current generation of Germans should not be held responsible for the sins of their grandparents; they had absolutely nothing to do with Hitler's plans. Also, he might review the story of Dresden where about 300,000 civilians were killed by allied bombing (there was no apparent industrial or military targets) duriong the war. That make the re-construction of the city even more remarkable!

No one ever talks about the firebombings of Japan, in which a great deal more of Japanese people were killed than any bombings in Europe.

Know Very Little, Dresden's historic city centre was in deed nearly completely destroyed. This fact even the "Western" historians can't deny. The official death toll of 25,000 is ridiculous, a black and bitter joke. Those "official" historians who came to that number don't even tell or show whether they based their calculations on 100,000 Silesian refugees in the city center or more. there were approx 500,000 refugees from Silesia in the city center at that time fleeing from the Red army. IMO the death toll is at least 250,000, perhaps 500,000. And it was the British that started with bombing civiilian targets of German cities. The British already started long before the war building a bomber fleet of huge bombers. The German Air Force (Luftwaffe) never had this type of huge bombers that was able to to fly from Germany to England and back to Germany while transporting loads of bombs. The German approach of the Air Force was different. The German Air Force was primarly intended tu support the fighting troops on the groiund, while the Anglo-Saxon Air Forces were primarly built up to destroy German cities and to create terror.

@Know Very Little your name fits perfect! "another myth" so my great-grandfather didn't lose his whole family while getting bombed by allies at a side part of dresden(dresden-gittersee / dresden-coschütz. google it and check if it is in the centre of dresden)...just a myth... he couldn't even bring his family to the graveyard. they all got burned at a heap hours after getting bombed to prevent epidemics. there were heaps full of dead bodies everywhere and also this 25k is just ridiculous. everyone who had family in dresden or survived dresden '45 knows the truth. but yeah you know it better since you won the war and used google...and google is always right.

I live in Dresden. I love it. It really is worth a look. But right now I must say I am ashamed of being a citizen of Dresden. Pegida has poisoned our reputation and our peace. This beauty fades while they turn those historical buildings into their monuments. It is a shame that this is happening to Germany right now. But don't be scared to visit Dresden anyway. There are a lot of open minded people living in the new city. It's nice to see some different faces around...

Open Mindedness ´brought westgermany to the brink of not seeing a single german face in the evening hours at some places .Pegida is literally saving you from that .Trust me , it is not a nice experience to not feel save in the evening hours because youre shouted at and called a fkn german .

So you are really someone, who believes, that everyone, who is not german is automaticlly a rude, sexist person. I just cant understand how there are people in this world, who have that much hatred that they cant see the bigger picture. First: White people are the minority on this planet and should not feel better just because the pigments in their skins are not that close (and yes, thats the only difference) Second: this is one planet and because of the world economy we are to blame for people starving and dying Third: just because youre born i germany it is not your land And last: it is wrong to hate people you dont know. Fact is while your biggest problems are your described ones there are people dying and fighting to survive, rotting in unmarked graves, robbed of their rights. Does it really just need another skin color to loose all the human urge for justice? Ich sage nur dein Kommentar... neues Tiefstniveau!

Pegida does not scare me. I am glad for them that they are working to ensure a future for their people and culture, a basic human right. Looking forward to visiting beautiful Dresden in the spring.

Of course it's a human right. But what comes along with it has nothing to do with humanity and equality. People being insulted and hated, just because they look different. There are even grown up men insulting black kids. That is wrong and doesn't have anything to do with fighting for freedom. It's keeping others down in order to feel strong

Celia L that is indeed quite disturbing. But I understand Germany and most of Europe is currently in the midst of a demographic-crisis, brought on by the arrival of hundreds of thousands of migrants (mostly military aged men) from cultures that historically have been at odds with Europe, and to this day hold certain values and norms that are antithetical to liberal European values. While random and unprovoked acts of violence like that heaped on the poor African kid can never be excusable, I won’t fault ordinary European men for wanting to defend their identity and culture.
