Jackie Kennedy is a style icon who transcends time and trends. In this video I react to the costumes in the film Jackie and analyze whether they are historically accurate or not. The costume designer for this film is Madeline Fontaine who also created the costumes for the film Ameile. Madeline stated that she tried to match the costumes as closely as possible to what Jackie actually wore, and let me tell you, her historical reconstructions are wild.
If you appreciate 20th century dress history as much as I do, subscribe! 🥂

Thank you for starting the heavy lifting that is being the first on the platform to talk historical context in terms of the broader history of historical dress for vintage fashion. The cause and effects between history and dress is so fluid and relatively fast for the majority of the century. I caught a bootleg of the Jackie movie. Note. Perfect. I was born in the late 60's, so it's close enough to me that I saw people still wearing those cloths on special occasions. Not once did a costume choice pull me out of the story. How on Earth do you track down the Exact Same Buttons... - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

Hi Cathy, it’s always a joy to read your comments. I really appreciate your recognition. I saw people making vintage clothing (love those videos) but not really diving into the history behind them. Yea, the costumes in Jackie really are stunning. The lengths they went to get everything right still amazes me. I’m enamored with 60s dress!

@@CarolineElizabethMartin Hey Woman! For the foreseeable I'm going to be dabbling in the 50's - mostly because I was able to snag some lovely patterns on a couple of Stephanie Canada's unboxing livestream (psst - propose a collab with her, sure she would be open to it and the combined knowledge of the two of you would be a treat). The long-term goal is to be able to sew clothing for myself from the first half of the century. I have family photos to try to match up to. As for the Jackie costumes. They somehow found the buttons and an original tag to put into the costume. I don't even know where to begin on that one. Just...

@@CarolineElizabethMartin Once we're done the Great Apartment Rearrangement I'm going to be starting on this lovely fit and flair dress pattern from the 50's (it's a Hollywood, which I'm geeking out over). I'm going to break it down into a skirt; then bust adjust for the top; then join them together for a dress; and maybe a rain coat in cloth from Ghana. Basically I'm going to spin it into a little wardrobe. It's the wardrobe carrot I'm dangling in front of me as I go through yet another box of papers.

Mid 1960s fashion is my favorite style, so I am happy to find a channel that deals with clothes after the 1950s 😍 Because as you say, watching people recreate 19th century clothes is fun and all, but I want more content about more recent decades. I also regularly sew 60s style dresses myself.

these were my years.I sewed and wore the little dresses with yoked, little rolled collars and princess seams. A new kind of fabric came out--bonded knit. very easy to sew and looked nice.

You should do a video on Jackie's wedding dress. She treated the seamstress, a black woman named Ann Lowe, horribly.

It took me a second viewing to recognize Natalie Portman portraying Jackie. What a contrast between ultra-petite Portman (I believe she is 5'2") and "normal-sized" Jackie, who was 5'8" and wore a size 10 shoe. The costume designer had to recreate everything, even though she probably had access to the actual garments that Kennedy wore.
