Since it’s from Shien, you’d have to use the boil method with the synthetic dye (Rit has a good tutorial for this). So you’ll need a really big steel pot (if it’s a pot you eat with, you need to clean it with chlorine bleach or a powder cleanser after dyeing).

You need to press your fabric before, during, and after your sewing, otherwise everything you make will look homemade! It's hard to see if this is a nice garment because it was not pressed while being constructed. It is definately not flowy as it is because of that. If you follow this advice, you will find the quality of everything you make will be improved immensely. I cannot stress pressing enough!

With the synthetics you need to boil the dye/fabric. The back of the rit dye more bottle should have more info on the specific water ratio/processing time

I did follow all the instructions (I boiled the water before mixing the colour etc). Usually it takes the colour straight away, but this fabric doesn't seem to properly soak any of the pigment :/

@@recreatefulchannel a few years ago, I experimented with dying a polyester material with Dyemore. I basically had to cook the fabric in the dye bath for 20-30 minutes in a big pot on the stove or it would wash out. Some colors took better than others, and some materials take the dye better than others. I think because some synthetics are pretty much plastic, the heat is needed to make the threads more pliable, which lets it absorb more of the dye. I could be wrong, but there is probably a reason for it.

For synthetic fabrics you have to dye them in lightly boiling water. I've had success dying even plastic sandals with this method!

Dyes come in two types. One is for synthetic fibres. One is for natural fibres. U need to match this to the type of fabric you are dying. If you have an item of clothing that was half one natural and half synthetic, you could put red and green dye in with one dye being synthetic, put it in the bucket and it'd come out evenly dyed separate colors on both halves.

I like the new dress better! It's cute where the other was plain except for the weird wrap tie. Also I think orange is pretty for spring, summer or fall (unless it's a neon orange), so it's up to you if you want to try dying it again. Some materials are very hard to re-dye from what I hear, which is why I haven't really gotten into trying any dye projects.

Very nice!! So glad it was upcycled instead of being thrown away! Just a tip for dyeing synthetic fabrics like this - the fabric/dish soap/water/dye mixture needs to be heated to just under boiling (between 200 and 212 degrees Fahrenheit) and kept there for at least 30 minutes for the dye to take. I recently dyed 2 pairs of polyester curtains with the same Rit dye, and I kept them at a soft boil for a full hour before taking them out. I used 3 gallons of water (which is all I could fit in my pot) and 2 bottles of black dye, and they ended up a medium gray (they started as a beige/sand color). Polyester in specific requires double the amount of dye to get the intended color, so I think if I wanted them to be a darker black I should have used four bottles of dye. Either way, good luck with dyeing in the future! It’s a tricky business!

I think it's the sleeves that look weird other than that the new cut is actually pretty cute. I liked the original too but you definitely made it more modern. With that being said I think the orange matches the modern cut even if it's not my favourite colour. Maybe embrace fall coming our way and keep it orange? Idk... Brown would look bomb too but idk how to help

Everyone coming in clutch with the rit dye tips! Also make sure you’re using the right dye for your fabric. They have two different formulas: one for natural fibers and one for synthetics. If it’s polyester it’s a synthetic!
