How $300,000 in student loans changed the course of my life. Has student loan debt changed your life?
Hello my friend! Little bit different content today than usual, I've wanted to do this video for awhile and finally got the nerve to share with you why I started living and traveling in a truck camper. There's a fun recap of the amazing off road adventures we've been able to go on over the last year or two and more about the upcoming future of this channel!
I made this video because I want to help inspire others not to give up, with lots of hard work, determination and time you can work towards reaching your dreams.

Hannah, this video should be shown every year in High School. I am an old retired teacher and believe that finance, citizenship, the value of going to a trade school, and what are taxes for should be taught in every grade level in some form or other. Your video will be of great value to all to see. Thank you.

As someone that is in the trades that started later in life I am totally for that as well. I am still learning about a lot of that stuff and I am 44. Lucky for me I didn't have to get any student loans for to go to Clackamas community college to get my degree in manufacturing technologies (basically machining in the actual sense) as the place I was working at when I was going to school and later go through the apprenticeship they ran at that workplace. And so even with that I am still having some debt as I have done some stupid things over the years but it's not much of a debt at least lol.

You must be insane. You want children to learn VALUABLE life lessons before they actually begin a real life? What kind of psycho are you. We need to teach them how to add 10 + 12 the longest and hardest way possible, that’s how you make smart people that comply and do what they’re told without question… wait a minute???

Hannah, you are an inspiration to people young and old. I'm 55, almost 56, and have been living the American dream of career and home ownership for my whole life. A 20 year battle with chronic Lyme changed a lot for me, but now that I'm well I'm out backpacking and living life again, although I still have the full time, stressful sales career that keeps me busy and exhausted. I wrote a book on healing from Lyme naturally in hopes that, that would give me the extra income to slow down, but I had no idea how hard it was to make money on book sales...I'm positive that KZfaq is more lucrative. I've already written more than I wanted to, but in short, keep doing what you're doing because you make a difference. I'm sure there are critics and they areboften the loudest, but know that there are a lot of us out here that enjoy seeing your enthusiasm for life and your tips for better living.

When I went to high school in the 80s one of the requirements to graduate was a home economics class. We basically learned about different types of loans and interest. We learned about budgeting money for food, utilities, insurance etc... We learned how to balance a checkbook. We also leaned about the stock market by (pretend) buying stocks at the beginning of the semester and seeing how they did by the end. We learned how to fill out a job application and make a resume. It was all real life type stuff. It's unfortunate they don't seem to teach that anymore.

Hannah, I started my engineering degree with two years at the community college and transferred to a 'fancy' school for the last two years and the diploma. I basically got half off the cost! I also stayed home and saved all the room and board (and ate better at home). I worked in a hardware store all the way through and got out with minimal loans. Now, after 50 years in the workforce, I retired and roam with my wife in an RV (that’s how we stumbled on to you!) For our four kids, I told them if they get accepted at a fancy school, they are good to go as long as they get a scholarship to pay the way… otherwise there is simply no business case for it and we didn’t have $1 million sitting around in our family wealth. All four of them got their undergrad degrees and three master’s degrees and didn’t pay one cent of tuition! Scholarships all the way! And there are Harvard, MIT, NYU and Georgetown degrees in that mix! Obviously, my kids are an order of magnitude smarter than me!

@@DrHannahStraight Until people started talking about it, I felt like a complete failure trapped in a miserable situation. I think we all need to have more authentic conversations. There's a story in a recent book I read (can't remember which right this second) that talked about an "unhidden secret". When asked everyone says "I'm fine" but that's a lie that doesn't hide the truth it just leaves the truth unspoken. The result is that everyone ends up feeling isolated in their personal experience of the truth because no one is being authentic. The truth is that life is hard and we are all going through hard things. This story resonates so much with me. The more we talk to each other about our truths the better we can handle our experiences without that feeling of isolation. 🤗❤️

I'm 55 yrs old. I'm raising a family with a teenager while doing 12hr shifts on a Days/Nights rotation at a refinery. I've been doing this almost my entire career. Not easy for sure. I went in to college back when it was affordable. A lot of people go to college . A lot of college grads can't find a job. Remember this country was built with people using there minds as well as with their "HANDS". Consider skills and trades when you're picking a career. This country has a deficit of that. PS.....I haven't used the degree I went to college for in almost 30 yrs. I make more money using my mind and hands together. :) I can't wait to try the mushroom coffee and watch your next video.

Having a trade to me is so important. My eldest son has an apprenticeship in plumbing and heating, my other son leaves school next year and is looking to gain an apprenticeship in engineering. I've tried to educate them both to manage their finances as the education system in the UK doesn't teach them this. Loving the content you are proving Hannah. All the best for 2022.

Yes, it's a money-making industry that leaves many saddled in debt they'll take decades to pay off and some never. Some waste the time and money to end up in a field they didn't go to school for or a field they can't make a decent living in despite the degree.

Same here Tim , but I ended up with $ 10.000 in student debt the last years in university, but I count myself lucky. It's terrible to be in your mid 20 and have huge debt that even before you start a family and buy a house. It's financial slavery.

Thank you for talking about this. Our entire generation was truly sabotaged by them convincing us all to sign on to a debt the size of Alaska the second we graduated, leaving us with immoral high interest rates. No one should have their future ruined for pursuing a higher education, like the fact that it's essentially impossible to get forgiveness on the loans is the first indicator that it's a corrupt system that needs to be reset and restructured.

Amen. You hit the nail on the head. I was pressured and conned by a college to pursue computer networking. Saying everyone gets a job making $50 thousand a year after their first year. That was good money back then. It was a lie. I graduated, had $40,000 in school loan debt and never could get a job no matter how hard I tried. I finally went and learned a trade. Joined a union and now make $55.00 per hour in construction. Wish I had never wasted my time going to college. I waisted 2 years of my life when I could have been enjoying it doing things I wanted.

It took me 14 years to get my degrees, largely because I paid as I went. I didn't take out loans because I was terrified at the prospect of not being able to pay them back. As such, I feel a great deal of empathy for people with excessive student debt, because there but for the grace of God went I. But I do not agree with the idea of forcing taxpayers to pay off that debt. Someone who never got a chance at higher education should not see their taxes raised to subsidize the consequences of someone else's decisions. I'm all for reform and halting interest after a certain dollar amount; I'm not for punishing other people because you took a risk that didn't pay off and now don't want to own it.

Yes, Dr Hanna, we understand being a college graduate myself, I know where your coming from. My Dad wanted to start a garden as soon as we got the septic tank put in! We’re from a large town, moving into on the outskirts of a small town. About eighteen inches deep we hit rocks, so we knew the foundation was good and my Dad could plant! Pumpkin’s, onions, cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, dates, corn needed more water and so do watermelon. Most of his fun was protecting the pecan tree from the squirrels, rabbits from the rest of the garden. You can use rain water draining into a tank to help water.
