Hello my friend! Today I want to take you down into the engine room of this big old boat. There is certainly a lot of learning and work to do ahead of me before I go on a fishing expedition but it's gonna happen! Any ready and willing participants?! Let me know in the comments where you'd want to see an excursion to! This is just part 1 of this boat renovation, I will be working through the entire boat restoring as much as I can!

Dr. Hannah, I can't help but like you more and more with each video I watch. First, those Volvo engines are pure gold when properly maintained. Take care of them, and they'll take care of you! Second, you need to come visit us on the East Coast. We also have mountains, rivers, lakes, deserts, beautiful vistas, and ............ no smoke!! (Although we do get our fair share of hurricanes.) Having "gotten to know you a bit" through your videos, I have no doubt you'd fall in love with the Everglades and the Keys. Third, thank you again for sharing your adventures and aspirations with us, with everything else going on in the world, you are ALWAYS a breath of fresh air. Ciao!

I got a kick out of you talking about your "sea legs". Brought back memories of my navy days. After spending from a few weeks to a few months at sea without a port of call, your legs get very used to the constant motion of the deck below you. Stepping onto dry land after that is an experience you just have to go through to understand. Best of luck, captain!

Hey Doc, because the engines sit so low in the hull, many boats use a pump to extract the oil from the sump. There is very likely a valve on or very near the sump. Trace out the hose to find the pump and continue tracing it out to find the discharge. Those engines likely hold a lot more oil than you realize. Look up local laws about servicing and disposal of used oil and oil soaked trash. The boat looks in really good shape. The woodwork is beautiful!

Volvo Penta has been at it for decades and honestly an inline 6 turbo diesel is a great engine, they're perfectly balanced, the pistons are vertical so there's no wearing of cylinders as seen on a V configuration, and a random note almost every inline 6 engine has the same firing order 153624. In fact I am in the process of converting from a V8 to an inline 6 engine in my truck. The low end torque a straight 6 produces is impressive. I agree wholeheartedly on the space constraints in a boat engine bay. I regularly worked on the twin Cummins turbo diesels on the SeArk 34' naval patrol crafts my Navy unit used for inshore security and vessel escort duties.

Addressing the cushions and soft surfaces is a good first step to dealing with “boat odor”, but I found that you have to find the stagnant water to completely rid a boat of all smells. Check all the bilges, shower sump pump housing, air condition overflow tray, and anywhere else you think water can accumulate. You’d be surprised how the smallest amount of sedentary water contributes to that musty smell. Once you get the stagnant water out, you’ll notice a tremendous difference. Then as the boat is used, all water entering the boat will flow through your water systems. All boats leak and or have water intrusion. I would highly recommend damp rid buckets and hanging air fresheners to address the dampness. Good luck. It’s a lot of work so enjoy the boat while you fix it. You can definitely do it with basic mechanical skills. With an older boat (new ones too), there will ALWAYS be something that needs fixing. This is my 12th year owning boats and I’ve spent as many years creating amazing memories…and working on the boat.

I have had diesel powered live aboard boats for over 40 years. I have worked extensively on all of them. You have to learn to do almost everything yourself because the cost of hiring decent marine help is beyond crazy expensive. So you buy all the manuals and sit and read and learn. You dive in and just figure out how to do everything yourself. You have a potentially great motor yacht and using it as a trawler is the perfect application. I have loved boating all my life and I suspect you will too. When i first started out and I was looking for a boat to live on an old salt took me aside and told me that there are two things that I should always avoid - teak decks and volvo engines. You will come to develop a love / hate relationship with your volvos but do not be concerned - they are what the boat came with so just do your best to love them and do all your maintenance with them in a regular, timely manner. Yes, you will come to despise volvo dealers, volvo parts availability and volvo prices. But it sounds like you got a great deal on the boat, she is a beauty and she can take you to many beautiful places and many great adventures. At the end of it all you will have wonderful stories to tell your grandchildren. So saddle up and take this ride. Life is a great adventure on a boat.

Hi Hannah, looks like you got yourself a good boat. I worked as a shipwright and mechanic on all types of boats. I am glad you have taken the approach to service and maintain your engines, those volvo engines are great if taken care of and used. Not sure where you are but in Washington state there are volvo folks who have all your parts and they are well priced, you can also find parts on ebay, you can use lithium batteries on your boat, there are many sailing channels on youtube you can watch to get great advice on lithium battery and solar setups. You will have so many great adventures on the water. Great project, Peace, love and fruit!

Another fun video to watch! Thanks! The Volvo Penta motors.... If they have been pampered and serviced regularly, should treat you well. Yes, parts are more expensive on VP than some other brands, but diesels are more expensive....period. They are good equipment though. Two new little snippets to pass your way... - Different battery technologies (lead-acid vs AGM vs Gel cell) all have different charging profiles, and you have to be attentive to what type of battery charger you have, and what it is capable of charging. Otherwise, damage can be done with a mismatch. - Also, you'll want to run the generator frequently...and under load. When they are not used, they become problem children... and expensive ones. So use it at least every couple of weeks, and turn on some high draw electrical items to "exercise" it. Have a friend "in the know" show you how to set your electrical panel so as to draw from it. Have fun!

Hey my friend, your doing great on your start on the boat. Removal of mold and repairing water damage are two major things to approach on restoring a boat. Mechanical items and electrical should also be gone over because they to are susceptible to damp or wet environments. I would also recommend insulation and sound deadening wherever possible while doing your restoration. Looks like your getting good advice and heading in the right direction as you get your boat ready for some fantastic adventures!

Love that boat. Don't get discouraged if there is still some smell after all of your cleaning, fogging, and replacement of the soft goods. All that wood will be the last to let go of the smells. But the more and longer it is left open to air out, the sooner the wood will have released all the smells and your boat will be nice and fresh smelling again.

If you decide to make that trip to Mexico, make sure you have a very experienced crew member with you, someone who has made the trek several times before, because there are areas that are very hazardous along the coast that you want to be avoid. Also be advised that bringing the boat back, you’ll be going against swell, and the waves are a lot bigger. I wish you the best.

I run Lithium on my sailboat with no problems. Most boat owners do...especially if you plan on doing a lot of off-grid. Use AGM for your start batteries, but Lithium for your house bank. The biggest problem with lithium on a boat is not fire or explosion of the battery, it's your alternator overheating. Lithium can accept a much higher charge rate. That combined with trawler speeds mean your alternators don't get enough cooling and overheat. You can use Balmar alternators (which are really expensive), or you can run a 12v to 12v dc converter. Basically, connect your standard alternator to your start bank only. Install the 12v to 12v dc converter between your start bank and your house bank. Remember to install an on/off switch to the converter. When your engines are running, it will charge your start bank. Turn on the 12v to 12v and your start bank will charge your house bank safely. Easy peasy, now your main engines are charging your house bank. The other thing to remember is you will need to install a lithium charger to charge your house bank while on shore power, or on the generator. That charger will burn up your AGM start bank. I disconnected my start bank from my house bank battery disconnect. I just went to Walmart and got a 4 amp trickle charger with a float option. I ran a 120v plug to the start batteries to power the trickle charger. My system works great now. The youtube channel "RVing with Tito" has a great tutorial that explains all of this. I use the Rengoy 12v to 12v 40A converter. It works great. Balmar alternators can run up to 1k depending on model, the Renogy will cost about 120.00

Always keep holding on to something while on the boat, in rough water & while the boat is on. If it’s just you on the boat it’s safe to have a safety line when cruising for a long trip so that you won’t fall off, & can’t stop the boat. There are throw lines & life vest that have different things like strobe lights, a whistle, a knife, or gerber pliers, flares, Navigation system & radio & hand held radio or satellite phone, usually our subscription for the GPS needed to be renewed. Just like a vehicle, if your nauseous when your engines are running, you have a leak & fumes are around you, open the windows and doors till you can patch it or turn that engine off & use the other till you get into port.

That adjustment to the rocking is called "getting your sea legs" as any sailor can tell you. Myself, being an old US Marine, I've been on ships across the Atlantic and Mediterranean, and through the Caribbean as well so my sea legs are well trained. Even better, I served on amphibious armored landing vehicles doing beach landings... I spent a lot of time on the waves. I know about that transition back to dry land too and it's a strange feeling to say the least.

I suspect a survey is, did it work at the time, was it clean. The light fixtures should be inspected and likely replaced, they likely get condensation and corrosion, use a anti-corrosion gel. Do crimp and solder connections, use all tinned copper multi-strand wiring and tinned copper lugs, put heat shrink on for electrical and chemical isolation, GE Glyptal after connection is made for electrical and chemical isolation. Always put 2 hose clamps on engine water hoses, including water cooled exhaust if present. Always have spare clamps. Replace all hoses and hose clamps, unless they are new. Replace drive shift boot if present, these always look good except where they start leaking. My experience is 32 to 40 ft ocean--going racing boats and personal 18 ft deep V on Lake Michigan. A boat owners happiest days are the day you buy the boat, and the day you sell the boat, in between the boat is a money pit.

To the west you can watch the sunrise as the first morning lights touch the tops of the Bitterroot mountains to the west and progressively moves down the mountains until it reaches the valley floor... then it marches across the valley floor till it meets the sunlight finally as it crests over the Sapphire mountains to the east.

YOU BOUGHT A VERY NICE BOAT. IT SEEMS TO BE IN VERY GOOD SHAPE. CHANGING THE WATER PUMP IS NOT A BIG ISSUE BUT LIKE YOU I WOULD CHANGE ALL THE OIL AND FILTERS ON BOTH ENGINES. NOTHING IS CHEAP BUT IT IS DOOABLE TO GET IT READY TO RIDE. THE VOLVO ENGINES ARE VERY GOOD. I WOULD ALSO ADD A COUPLE OF QUARTS OF SLICK 50 ENGINE OIL TREATMENT WHICH WILL CUT DOWN ON 90% OF THE WEAR AND WILL COAT THE ENTIRE INSIDE OF THE ENGINE WITH A FRICTION PROOF PROTECTANT. I WOULD ALSO DURING THE SERVICE REPLACE BOTH THERMOSTATS JUST FOR PEACE OF MIND. YOU MADE A VERY GOOD INVESTMENT. I HAVE TWIN VOLVO ENGINES IN MY BOAT SO I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DEALING WITH. EXCELLENT VIDEO YOU MADE. SERVICE THE GENERATOR ALSO AND ADD SLICK 50 TO IT TOO. IT WILL COST ABOUT 175.00 FOR THE SLICK 50 BUT IT SURE MAKES THE ENGINES QUITER AND RUN COOLER. NOT A KEYBOARD WARRIOR HERE. BEST OF LUCK FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS BTDT MANY TIMES. SORRY FOR THE CAP'S BUT TYPING THIS FROM THE FLIGHT DECK THE KEYBOARD IS ONLY CAP'S FOR SAFETY MEASURES.

Also, check with someone that knows more about it than I, but it is my understanding that lithium ION (Li+) batteries are bad around water, whereas lithium IRON phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are fine for boats. Almost all of the newer lithium batteries now used in RVs and boats (such as Battle Born) are of the LiFePO4 composition, which should be fine for your boat.
@kenmcclow8963
@kenmcclow8963 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are right that LFP batteries are fine for boats, whether it is for a power bank for solar, or to supply an electric motor. The NMC batteries which are mostly used in cars have more power, but also have the risk of overheating and catching fire. I have Battle Born batteries and they are fine, although expensive, but the LFP last longer and can draw deeper than AGM or FLA batteries.

@@G-ra-ha-m I disagree. You can only take lead carbon to 60% discharge and only get 20-40% of the life cycles of lithium. Even with their cheaper initial cost, this results in paying about 10 times more per kilowatt hour over their life.

@@GaryNichols50 If you discharge lithium too much it's life is also reduced, for a boat it's totally unsuitable. No idea where you got 60%, probably from a max cycle test, they can be discharged far more and still give a very good life - check out the Leoch and Victron brand specs. There are plenty of articles online comparing lead carbon to lithium.

Boric acid (white roach powder) mixed with hot water or rubbing alcohol kills all fungus and mold. And it is safe for people. I have used a pump sprayer and sprayed all over the inside of my bilge before. It also kills most bugs.

I’m really liking this boat, and the video about the boat. That was a nice touch to feature the plans. I had to stop the video and study them. The Pacific coast of Mexico is wonderful. What’s also wonderful is the Inside Passage up through B.C. into south-east Alaska. Good Vibrations

Consider changing the wet cell lead-acid batteries for AGMs. Sealed, zero maintenance, lower self-discharge rate, and not as costly as some of the other alternatives. I put AGMs in my boat and have been very pleased with them. WRT the oil change pump - since the engines are often the lowest thing in the boat, draining them like a vehicle can be impossible. A pump is used to draw the old oil out of the sump into a container. Since you have a breaker for an electric pump there may be one in the engine room that is used for that purpose. If not, West Marine and other marine supply outlets sell manual pumps that look like ginormous syringes.

A boat is a lot of work, but it is so worth it. It just depends on the person whether the pros outweigh the cons.

If you do find a switch that actually changes engine oil let me know - I'd love to have one too!! It's awesome you have the original drawings for the boat - great find. Be aware that if they are true "blue prints" they can fade when exposed to certain kinds of light for extended lengths of time (if you frame them). Don't want to lose your "treasure find"! Great adventure! Best of luck with all of it!

I am a skipper for 20 years. Volvo Penta are by far the best engines you can get and you can get parts anywhere in the world, for that fact they may be a bit more expensive, but the money you safe on parts, because they last longer easily makes up for this. I actually ask all the time which type of engine the boat has and if a tech is also hired and if it has Volvo I agree faster any day.

It,s a very beautiful boat. Back in the days Volvo 165 engines were some of the best ever made. Tuff strong and reliable .The pump is an easy fix just change the seals they don,t have to be original parts. For the batteries get the same you have there . Probably deep cycle ether two 6 volt or one 12 volt. Love your boat.

As a new boat owner something you may want to do is get a snorkel and fins and inspect the outside hull and bottom to see if it needs scraped or close to getting to be time to go into dry dock for sanding and painting.
