Hey man I'm from South Africa and this is one of our biggest local tournaments called submission kings. This was a special tournament based on quintet style. The biggest and basically best grapplers take part in these submission kings comps all year round, this was a basic quintet with the added rule of heel hooks being allowed here. Dricus is an absolute monster solely based on the fact that he went against some of the best our country can offer in terms of bjj and mma. SA also obviously produced Luke Griffith and these two men are only the beginning. There are more beasts on their way both male and female from SA💪🏻💪🏻 Awesome video man and great input!🍻

Grappling for MMA is much more direct and rudimentary. But in that, it can be frustrating for a player that is used to competing against other pure Grapplers.

Slow down here… coming from a wrestler his wrestling is trash. If it was straight wrestling match against a D1 caliber guy he’d get shutout tech fall every time. His mma wrestling is decent bc of his timing mainly. Real wrestlers stop getting caught in head and arms when we are like 9 years old

This is a Quintet format match. 5 vs 5. Rules are simple: 1. submission only 2. winner stays on 3 draw means both players are out 4. if the last fighter loses, the team loses Team total weight may not exceed 950 lbs. Matches are eight minutes. For matches where there is a 44 lb or greater weight difference, the lighter fighter can choose to fight for four minutes.

Don't be unhappy that he's adapted his BJJ for speed over style. MMA, he has to be prepared to get back on his feet and strike and kick. He can't spend 10 minutes playing handsy. What hurts, to the point that they tap, fast. Just about efficiency, and MMA means you are vulnerable to strikes and elbows the whole time, so spending time in transitions getting that perfect, technical hold... oh, look, you lost. He has a very good understanding of what matters and what doesn't.
@bane3991
@bane3991 4 ай бұрын
Yes, his physical attributes work very well. But the issue is, you can't teach this. It's largely genetic. Sure, you can lift weights and do strength and conditioning but you're at the mercy of your own genetics. So that's why technique is heavily focused on.

Every one of those guys would have been a white belt after one elbow from Dricus. Training to pull guard in any combat situation is not practical, and should be avoided at all costs. I understand this is a sport with rules, which is why it is so important to not practice bad habits. Top position... Top position... Top position... if you're not there, then everything should be focused on sweeps and scrambles to achieve top position. Can somebody point to the submissions that people are securing from the bottom in high level MMA? I love AJJ, and all aspects of training are geared towards self defense. I'm always trying to maintain top position. I'm a regular scrub in Jiu-Jitsu, but with good striking and a wrestling base I will smoke most black belts in the reals. I enjoyed your analysis btw. 14:50 is almost the Roger Gracie bread and butter closed guard pass... it's highly effective and you will love it... no flower sweep either.

Even if you put him up against the current top level grapplers and its straight grappling, he would get humiliated. It's a diff sport. I guarantee little Nicky Ryan would beat him easily. Nicky Rod? Commentary kinda sucks. If a guy reaches back like that you are just deadly. Sure. If you actually price the position of the bottom man he did it with great timing, bottom man had no grips (so there is no close arm bar or triangle), and turned sideways proper with good defense. Strength alone means you lose, so that is called good technique. I am sure YOU would not have got caught with the one arm guillotine cuz you are awesome. It’s “not a move but you make it one due to strength?” Ugh.

Highly doubtful. I was one of the people that were killing ppl with the leg locks you are describing when others were skeptical. He looks like a very physical blue belt by the way he moves and his preferred attacks. I’m not saying that it is not possible I am wrong. I’ve been wrong before and inevitably will be wrong again. Judging from what I’m seeing here though, I believe my statements to be correct.

I think this shows a lot of BJJ has become watered down. That’s why there are basically no BJJ MMA champs anymore. It’s kind of like, why learn a z guard when a good athlete that is able to can open your ass dominates your whole squad. BJJ needs a renaissance man! It needs to purge a lot of nonsense.

Hes a physical specimen. I understand why hes giving up some position so he can get triangled. Its because if theyre attacking you, they leave themselves vulnerable to get passed. I used this technique all the time. You have to time it correctly. Its like Roy Jones Jr. Leaving his hands low. Sure, hes not blocking with his hands up but it comes with benefits. Your opponent isnt used to it. You can land from angles youre not familiar with. You give the incentive to throw punches since your hands are down which leaves you vulnerable to counters. But you need go head movement and reaction times. His squeeze is unbelievable so he can hit submissions in spots you wouldnt expect. It plays to his advantage because hes strong enough to do that and youre weak in those positions because youre not taking them into account and youre not used to it.

That is very odd indeed. But a few things that tells me that Dricus is an undercover BJJ blackbelt - (1) He does BJJ submissions on them (2) Dricus has typical cauliflower ears from years of grappling training, I don't know if doing some judo can give you that. MMA nowadays is like catch wrestling in that they can grapple but have no belt rankings. Also MMA imploys other grappling techniques also. BJJ will have to evolve if they want to be the kings of grappling again.
@bane3991
@bane3991 4 ай бұрын
But Dricus is 100x more physically superior than them. Look at when Dustin Poierer rolled with Brian Shaw. Brian knew nothing about jiu jitsu and Dustin still couldn't do anything to him. Physicality matters. Anyone can get cauliflower ears. You can get that on your first day. True, you don't have to be ranked and you can be a black belt in terms of skill but that's what he was seeing here, what his actual skill was like which didn't point to being a black belt. What techniques do they do in MMA grappling that they don't do in BJJ grappling that would have made the difference here? The top grappling guys in the world aren't ufc fighters they're actual grapplers.

I think some of this is in old school BJJ. I learned a lot of principles that overlap with your footage. For example, my old school Rickson/Pedro Sauer gym doesnt really teach structured passing (in general, they will do it for very apecific acenarios or if you ask). Instead they teach principles and I think youd like them. The biggest one that is one I've named "dick in front of your nose". I always keep this hips forward posture with my head back which keeps a posture like you're promoting.
