That velcro trick is brilliant for two reasons... It helps with image stabilization and it pushes the camera out just far enough away to avoid the helmet being in the view finder. Brilliant! I'm going to be using that. 🙂

Genius! Thanks. Also thinking your velcro solution is safer than 3M adhesive, i.e. in the event of impact velcro likely to fail at less load than 3M, still no camera is safer obviously. I wear a camera to avoid fraudulent insurance claims which is becoming more common in the UK (twice to me). Have to say the filming quality of a Contour or GoPro is far superior for vlogging. The Ghost Drift XL has more of car cam features (memory looping and longer charge life), but comparatively a poorer sound and image quality. But I am not a vlogger so happy days with this velcro HJC helmet solution.

I stuck it on the flip up , had it for years never had a problem, I don’t drive with the helmet flipped up.

Great video buddy. Just Ordered myself one.Not really fussed about using a mic as I mainly want it to capture memories from my biking trips and as a dash cam. Are you happy with the footage it captures standard or do you adjust anything when your editing ? Also is it easy to do basic editing like adding music ? Cheers buddy 👍

Update - May 2023 - Hi all I can say that the that the Velcro is still doing its job well and I have been out in rain and sunshine and still grips very well but don't be afraid to give it a good grab and make sure it has a good grip on all sides of the sticky bits. Better to do it when off the bike rather than while riding and you lose your camera.

Thanks for the video Skip, very useful. I don't have this camera yet but am seriously considering one. The GoPro has a good rep but they just seem a bit bulky to me to mount on a helmet, the Drift XL is pretty sleek. The mike cable hanging down below the base of the helmet looks prone to failure and I was wondering if mounting the camera upsidedown on the left side would work better. I understand you can rotate the lens but not sure if this will be enough.

Now 2 years since this video, so how has it lasted ? Any probs ?

I have it on my shoei JCruise helmet - no wind noise whatsoever - you wouldn’t know it was there. Better to have it as not in the event of a biking /vs vehicle accident.

How do you fit the mount to the camera?

You could have packed it out with 3M outdoor double sided tape. Velcro loses its strength after a period of time

This guy came up with a good, lo-tech solution for the Drift using a bulldog-clip and a 1/4" screw for the tripod mount, which is actually very low profile and secure, and doesn't put any adhesive or damage on the helmet.
