It is a waterproof (IPX7) 4K action cam which main purpose is to last as long as possible so you won't have to change batteries during your ride. That is why there is no 4K 60 FPS mode as it would drain the battery much faster. I have been using these type of cameras frm Drift for years for my KZfaq channel. I know GoPro has a better image quality but this is so much more useful on a motorcycle due to the rotatable lens, long battery life and bullet form shape.
Basically this is an upgrade of the Ghost 4K but now IPX7 waterproof and it accepts 256 GB microsd cards where the 4K stopped at 128 GB. Future videos will likely be recorded with this camera. In the samples I have used the Drift external microphone of course. The internal mic will do you no good if you ride a motorcycle. Thanks for this review. I have been using Drift cameras since they released Original Ghost. And it still works great today. I like the build quality, but I'm not a fan of not being able to change batteries on the go.

The real review (the written one) still has to be made, which will have much more information. I have been using them since the Ghost-S. You can't change the batteries but you can charge them while riding via a powerbank or USB port on your bike/car. At least now it is 100% waterproof. My Ghost-S did work in rain but it was always the question if water would enter the rear hatch when the external mic was inserted..

Het is een fijne camera, maar de audio is niet echt goed. Van de Ghost 4K was de audio beter. Het klinkt wat bedompt en je hebt sneller clipping bij hard geluid. Toch gebruik ik 'm verder graag. Mijn Ghost 4K is helaas na een jaar of 6 overleden. Ik heb nog wel 2 Ghost 4K+'s liggen, maar de audio daarvan was geloof ik ook niet zo goed. Binnenkort die maar weer eens proberen, maar die zijn niet 100% waterdicht. Iets wat ik echt kan waarderen aan de XL Pro.

Hi there, have you tried a different position/angle besides your helmet? I have a bicycle and I’m wondering if the quality or stabilization will be good if it’s on my bike handlebars or seatpost.

No, only on my helmet. Well previous I tried it on a top case and I have used a suction cup. But as I test various bikes the fastest way for me is to use the helmet. I once used a Ghost X I think on my bicycle on the steer/handle bars and it worked pretty well on asphalt without stabilization. If you use stabilization it will work but the field of view will crop to around 90 degrees. Maybe enough on a bicycle but not good on a motorcycle.

Audio is better on the 4K+. The rest is the same, except the XL Pro is 100% waterproof.

Well DRIFT messed up again, I am glad to see the stabilization finally!! Yes, it is needed on any bikes that are ridden off road. They still have the microphone plug on the bottom of the camera, so it gets destroyed by your shoulder when riding off road. On the Drift Ghost X they finally came out wit a 90 degree connector so its much better, but not perfect. On my last ride through Death Valley my new jacket managed to unplug the 90 degree connector 4 or 5 times, causing me to loose my audio, I finally secured it with electrical tape. My Ghost XL microphone plug screws into the bottom of the camera, so you have no other options for another external microphone. The straight hanging microphone connector usually last about a month then the wires bend & flex enough from hitting your shoulder that they short out. I have resorted to mounting the drift cameras upside down on the other side of the helmet so the connectors face up and don't impact your shoulder. I'm on my 5th or 6th Drift X camera and I have one Drift XL that I rarely use because the sound quality is so poor and gets distorted easily no matter what setting I use. I prefer the Drift X replaceable batteries over the built in ones. Yes you can charge them on the go if your a street biker and just sitting there but if you are off roading moving around on the bike it is impossible. Drift Bley it again with this camera. I recently switched to DJI cameras. I'm tired of fighting the broken cameras and stupid design flaws of the mic jack.

Stabilization was there at least since the Ghost 4K but personally I think it is unusable on a motorcycle due to the narrow fov (when riding on the streets). Are you aware that there is a shoulder mount available for Ghost cameras? Perhaps that might be better for offroad rides. Sound on the X and XL aren't the best, sound on the XL Pro is better luckily. And about charging, I don't ride offroad but would a powerbank somewhere on your body and connecting it to the camera to the job? Probably not safe if you fall though.

Wouldn’t it be easier to mount on left side of helmet so you can use your non throttle hand on the left to push the buttons then to try crossing your left arm around to your right side of helmet to push them? I was just wondering.

I start recording before my ride and I stop recording when I'm done riding. No need to push buttons while riding.

Yes, all Ghost cameras have the 1/4 inch thread. At least since the Ghost-S model. Probably even before that.

For as far as I have seen you can use 140 degrees at least in 4K UHD, 2.7K, 1440 and 1080. I haven't checked below that. Where did they crop on the Ghost 4K besides when stabilization is enabled?

@@MotoSnax Thanks for your reply and I have found the reply I sent to Amazon when I had to return the Ghost 4K back: Zoe you asked for feed back on the item I bought from you and it is this. The battery life says 3 hours I was lucky to get 2 hours. What the instructions don't say when you have the camera in 1080p at 60fps with stabilization on is that all you get as a FOV is 115 and not 140. What is also crap is when its in that mode the video quality is terrible compared to the Ghost X's I have which are half the price! Pretty poor all round really when I was so looking forward to have the ghost 4K to add to my other cameras.

With stabilization on the FOV goes back to somewhere around 90 degrees or so. That is why I don't use stabilization. So that is no failure. But that it had 2 hour battery life, that is not good.

I understand that Event Protection will record if theres a punch or sudden stop. Can I manually trigger and save the event by pressing some buttons? On the Ghost XL

That would be 'Tag' mode. It buffers a certain amount of minutes of video, if you press the button it will write them on the microsd card. I don't use those features, I just record my entire trip.

It depends. The quality is better on the microsd card itself. It also depends on what the license plate looks like. Over here you have black on yellow, but I used the camera in the USA and it was more difficult to read them. Unless they are really close.

It might be something! Had to get used to it the first 10 minutes or so, probably because I have been riding my motorscooter and not my motorcycle. And no, it is the full power version. Not sure if I will be testing the A2 version this year but I will upload the exhaust video soon. No top speed or 0-100's.

There is a manual online. It has stabilization but it will narrow the field of view to about 90 degrees. I don't use it as I can't use it riding bikes. I need to have a higher FOV. I think stabilization goes up to 2.7K.

Thanks! Check 1:55 to see how I've mounted it. Using the live view in the app you can see where to place the mount so you won't see the helmet.

They will probably release a firmware update for those lines at night. This was a pre-preduction camera. I have the retail one but have not used it at night yet to see if it has the same issue.

Goedemorgen, what will be the best settings for the microphone? Have at at 2 now but most of the time there's no sound at all....When using it as a car dashcam there is sound, weird he?

It depends on what you are recording and how loud that is. I have set it at '2', if needed I will gain in post edit. Do yo use an external mic while riding? And how about when using it in your car?

That is really weird. Though I always use an external mic when riding. Even with internal mic you should still hear something, like you do when you ride a car. The only thing I can think of is that your exhaust is so loud that the mic just can't handle it and records nothing (well, the way too loud sound, if...)

Yes it has stabilization but only in 2.7K and lower resolutions. Check 6:33. Via app or camera you can switch it on or off. But in my opinion it is completely useless on a motorcycle as your field of view is limited to 90 degrees whichi is way less than 140 degrees which you normally can use without stabilization.

@@MotoSnax Thank you, you have anwsered one of my questions. Drift haven't sorted out the stabilization to degree angle. That's one of the reasons why I had to send the Drift 4K back. It is a shame as I wanted to go to 4K. The 1080p ones are good so shall stick with the 6 that I have!

If I’m using an open face helmet, how do I get sound of the bike without wind noise? Is it easier to plug in the external mic ? I’m not worried about my voice being heard, just want bike sound without wind, any suggestions?

Then you must use the external mic. The internal mic(s) will be shut off.

I put the external mic in a pocket on my back. Most jackets don't have that, so I went to a tailor to make one. That way most wind noise is gone.

Sorry for the late reply. Mine shows the date stamp when turned on. Try the latest firmware update and see if it shows then? Perhaps it also differs per resolution. I only tried it in 1080P.

Heb hem ook besteld de ghost drift xl pro. Dit nadat ik eerst de 4k+ heb gehad, een prima camera en perfect beeld. Maar helaas na 3 keer filmen was hij stuk. Kan hem niet meer aan krijgen en dus ook niet de update installeren waar de firma mee kwam. Ook de meegeleverde batterij was van zeer slechte kwaliteit was in een mum van tijd leeg en ging zeker niet de tijd mee die drift aangeeft. Hopelijk heb ik meer geluk met de xl pro. Vind het een makkelijke camera en heb ook gelijk de remote control mee besteld

Vreemd, heb hier 2x een 4K+ liggen. Ze werken goed, de XL Pro is wel beter in de regen. De audio vind ik wat tegenvallen, maar bij de 4K+ was het ook al niet perfect. Bij de 4K was dit het beste, maar die van mij is na een jaar of 6 overleden. Als de camera niet aan wil, wil het soms wel eens helpen de reset-knop in te drukken. Ik weet niet of je 'm al hebt weggegooid of niet, maar bij de 4K+ onder het flapje van de microsd, zit ook een gaatje van de reset-knop (er zitten meerdere gaatjes, even kijken in de handleiding). Als je die indrukt, heb je nog best kans dat de camera wel weer aan wil gaan!

@@MotoSnax nee helaas werkt niet, heb van alles geprobeerd, en na heel lang contact te hebben gehad met drift krijg ik met een kleine bijbetaling een xl pro toegestuurd. Ook heb ik een nieuwe 4k+ erbij besteld omdat ik hier eigenlijk heel tevreden was over de kwaliteit. Het geluid vind ik minder belangrijk, omdat ik er met een programmatje er een leuk muziekje onderzet, gemixed met het geluid van de camera.

@@MotoSnax resetten lukte helaas niet, camera gaat helemaal niet meer aan ook niet op volledig opgeladen batterij. na heeeel lang zeuren bij drift omdat hij nog in de garantie viel, tot elkaar gekomen en met een kleine vergoeding van mijn kant sturen ze een xl pro op. had ook nog een nieuwe 4k+ besteld en die doet het tot nu toe nog goed. de kwaliteit van het geluid vind ik van minder belang omdat ik van de motor ritjes film maakt met een lekker stukje muziek eronder. hoop dat ze ook de remote control meesturen waarom ik gevraagd had, ander bestel ik hem zelf wel erbij. lijkt me toch wel handig, helaas was de optie bij de 4k+ niet mogelijk.

Als je er inderdaad een muziekje onder zet, is het niet erg. Ik wil toch wel gewoon het uitlaat geluid laten horen in mijn korte video's. Wel jammer dat die eerste dan niet goed was. Gelukkig zijn ze hier altijd goed geweest, ik heb aardig wat Drift camera's liggen ondertussen. Alleen dus jammer dat de 4K van mij kapot is gegaan. Maar nu heb ik dus vooral de XL Pro op de helm, omdat ik dan geen zorgen hoef te maken om het weer. Bij de 4K+ weet ik niet of het echt een felle regenbui kan overleven.

After 9 months my DGX just stopped. I did the usual stuff to try and get it started and contacted customer services. No joy there . I then bought the DG XLPro and that wouldn't even charge up or turn on !

You can reset the XL Pro by pressing the ON/OFF button for 20 seconds. That is the reset button. See if that helps.

Image quality on the GoPro's is much better. Too bad they don't have the rotating lens and loooooooong battery life.

What does the rotating lens do?

To level the camera horizontally. So you can record with the camera upside down but if you turn the lens it is the right side up. It can turn for something like 330 degrees. Drift says 360 degrees but I am not so sure of that. I don't understand that other manufacturers use this feature.

Depends on the resolution. In 4K@30 I can do 4 hours and 20 minutes, in 1080@30 6 hours and 12 minutes. Still a LOT more than any other camera out there on a single charge.

@@MotoSnax That's why I like the drift cameras! To and back from work 3 times before charging and I can even get a small trip in to the shops and back at a push. GoPro? I would be lucky if I could get to work and back on one charge!!

Yep GoPro runs flat in no time. But the image quality is superb for GoPro.

@@MotoSnax Yes I like that one (LOL quailty!!) but the quailty on the Ghost X is fine for me as this is the way I look at it is. If a vehicle hits me then the cameras are going to capture the number plates and what not. So that is good enough for me. Even at night the Ghost X have capture number plates that I thought would never get in a million years 😉

Yeah the Ghost X isn't that bad. I use the Ghost X in my car. 4K and XL Pro on the motorcycle. Currently only the XL Pro on the motorcycle as I don't have to worry about the weather.

@@MotoSnax yeah disabled. New SD card should arrive tomorrow. I went for the SanDisk Extreme this time, and bought it from memory cow rather than Amazon, just incase it was fake. See how that goes. Fingers crossed, otherwise I send it back

@@MotoSnax my new SD card arrived today. Went for the SanDisk Extreme 64 GB. Tried recording in 1080p 30 FPS as I did on other attempts and it once again switched off completely. So I decided for the first time to change to 4k 25fps and it's amazingly working. Been recording for over an hour and 10 mins as we speak. Is this a coincidence or is it the lower FPS and higher resolution?. I thought it should work in 1080p but never recorded past 22 mins

Shame it can't pick up number plates clearly even when you are literally a metre or less from it

Can't understand what you mean. If you stream the video in max. quality and stop e.g. at the point where he illegally overtakes the cars at the red light it is possible to see every detail of the license plates. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aNigm5aY2dyYqqs.html

The FOV is to narrow in today's market. 170 should be minimum.

The Ghost-S had 160 degrees which was fine. I agree that 140 is a bit narrow but I've got used to it as I have been using the Ghost 4K for about 5 years now.

The more narrow the higher the speed and lower corner angle!

It would have been nice to know what you were filming in - 4K or 1080? What was your frames per second? What was field of view setting?It might have been a useful video if you showed different results.

Why would I be showing samples in 1080 with a 4K camera? The title mentions '4K ride'. FPS is 30 (as mentioned in the short specs in the video and on a PC can be seen with the 'Stats for nerds' option). The stabilization video is shot in 2.7K@30 as there is no stabilization in 4K. FOV I did not mention (except in stabilization sample) but it is 140 degrees in all examples but the stabilization one (~90). You don't want to have a smaller FOV on a motorcycle than 140 degrees. I'd rather even have 160 or so like the old Ghost-S. All camera specs can be found in the link in the video description and the pinned message. In basic it is the Ghost 4K but waterproof. I will update the chapter names to make it more clear. Thanks!

If you think my video is useless and boring and yours is much better; perhaps you have missed my written review. The KZfaq video functions as a supporting role for my written review. If you need to give negative feedback to lure viewers to your channel, you start off on the wrong foot. Good luck with your channel!

But to get good and complete information from a high-quality video, distributed specifically on playlists to simplify the search for specific information. Maybe someone can become useful and help. If your video was good, I would have written "The video is good, thank you for the review" I am not angry, I do not humiliate colleagues in the shop to elevate myself. The video is bad and boring, so I wrote that your video is bad and boring. Note that I didn't leave any links, so I think this behavior is also not correct. There is a translator on top, also to Russian. I don't do video reviews, I use KZfaq to support my written reviews. Don't tell me to be kinder, you are telling me the video is bad and made by an intern, without giving proper tips how to make the videos better or what you are exactly missing. You should be kinder in the first place. This video was made to show people what the footage is like for those who read the written review. I bet you didn't know how big of a written review I made about the camera.

@@MotoSnax The article is really not bad, even good. But there are moments in it that do not correspond to reality. This means that it does not give a complete understanding of the product. The sound and picture quality is different from the earlier 4k+ model. The picture has become more stable, the colors are clearer and the recording is better in the dark.
