Drifting as a means of racing only works in fiction, as in real life it would be a waste of time, in addition to premature tire wear

For circuit racing and long, wide high-speed corners shown in this video grip would work much better, I agree, but what about rally and tight and slow corners?

In these tight corners, 4-wheel drift is very fast technique. In rally for example, the speeds get high and the rear is sliding you want it or not.
@HPsawusАй бұрын
Yeah kinda depends on the circuit and the drivetrain but most of the time it only slows you down

You don’t drift rear wheel drive to be fast. Drifting rwd is slow. Fwd drifting is fast on tight corners because of the tendency to understeer, as long as you did it right. Awd drifting is good in long corners because of slip angle and can hold full throttle on a long corners without understeering. But it’s for low grip conditions only, like rally. In track racing it’s better if you grip.
@Speeder832Ай бұрын
it depends heavily on the RWD car, if the front tires dont have enough grip to overcome the rear, you get understeer, especially with a limited slip/locked diff. You can however overcome this oversteer by pushing the rear tires past their limit of traction and maintaining a very shallow slip angle, doing so will allow you to eliminate understeer and achieve a higher speed through and at the exit of the corner, this is very commonly seen in rally with RWD cars, even on tarmac. However this is only really applicable at very low speed corners such as hairpins and wears the tires far more than maintaining traction. Combined with the fact that most purpose built race cars are tuned specifically to avoid this understeer, this is the reason its better to maintain grip in track racing

I feel like that's too little angle to be classified as drifting. It's more of a slip angle / between drift and grip, which is faster than both.
@generalh104216 күн бұрын
that is very much drifting. perfect slip angle on street tires is usually around 4-6 degrees away from the direction of travel, on racing slicks it can be more like 9-12 degrees... you would not be able to notice 6 degrees of rotation in a video like this. just by looking it seems like he is turned at least 20 degrees away from the direction of travel in most corners. you are probably thinking of "drifting" as only what you see in formula drift- those cars have 800 or more horsepower and special angle kits to allow them to drift like that. they are also very slow at cornering because they are only made to look good and not to drive fast. or maybe you just watched initial d for the first time (we have all been there, don't worry). in a low-powered car like the 86, entering a corner at an angle like that would simply cause you to either spin out or slow to a stop mid-corner. also- if you are properly performing slip angle then your tires are NOT slipping. it's a confusing term that was badly named imo. slip angle refers to the difference between the direction the wheel and tire is facing and the direction of travel. when the tires contact the ground they deform so that the contact patch of the tire faces the same direction as you are moving, this stretches out some parts of the tire, and that part of the tire pulls back on the wheel and the rest of the car which is what makes your car turn. believe it or not, you use slip angle every day when you drive to work, or school, or walmart... wherever you drive to. if you want to learn more about it look up "driving 4 answers slip angle" he has a very good video (he explains it way better than i do)
@Gliese710_26 күн бұрын
The reason drifting is faster is A. It started In front, B. It isn’t really drifting, that’s more slip angle/4 wheel drifting, which is faster.

Ehh, it looks to me more like the “drift” guy is mostly “grip” driving but pushing it way harder than the supposed “grip” guy. In order to be truly fast, you must be able to utilize slip angle and to do that, you have to be sliding a little.
