In this tip I am showing you a drill you can do to switch to a body swing vs. and arms swing. If you want to learn the powerful, effortless, pain-free swing that I teach you need to hit the ball with your body not your arms. To do that, you need to change the way you think.
I say this because in golf the ball is stationary. This means that as you reach the top of your backswing you will try to hit hard with your arms. This is due to human nature telling you to hit the ball hard with your arms. This is not what pros are doing and will never work. So a body swing vs. and arms swing is the way to go.
So here is a drill you can to switch to a body swing vs arms swing. This is not a drill to hit perfect shots. It's a drill to switch you to using your body not your arms. So watch this tip and start working on it right away. You can do this at the range or at home. The more you do it, the faster you will learn a body swing.

People. My whole KZfaq algorithm is covered in golf tips and tricks from a ton of content creators . I can say w great confidence that this guy was the one that turned around my whole mindset with the golf swing. The biggest revelation for me in all of his videos was “you better have a trigger in the start of your downswing”. Focusing on my belt buckle making the first move in my downswing instead of my arms making the first move -was a stunning revelation to way more easier follow thru and consistent shots. Thank you Paul !

Paul - your Virtual Golf School video, which I purchased a couple years ago from your website demonstrates exactly what you are talking about in this drill above. You took average and high handicap golfers through the process of turning the lower body first to start the downswing and turn the arms off. I’d recommend the Virtual Golf School to anyone who wants to see proof of the effectiveness of your instruction and philosophy.

I shot a 36, first time ever, on 9 holes. Driving was great and putting was unreal with 2 birdies, and 2 bogeys. It's all in the wrists, one the first things I ever worked on that you preach, and I simply could not get, until now. Of course, my swing was already much better but now it is unreal. A guy said that is the best drive I can hit, and you outdrove me by 35 yds. He was incredulous, thinking it is some sort of fluke, but then I do it over again time after time. I feel the wrists cocking all by themselves and you want to be calm and not try to hit just swing and it works so well. This is really cool and makes me glad i stuck with it and maintained, or tried to, a calm demeanor, even when playing well. No reason to get excited nor elated, after all it is only par golf. Cheers, and thanks, as always.

Mr. Wilson, thank you for this game changing method. For over 35 years I've been trying to get a nice, smooth classic swing. You cite Els and I'll include Couples, they have my favorite effortlessly silky smooth swings that I've always admired. A couple of years ago I lost part of my leg and have to work back to playing form. Oddly enough, before the surgery, I've been trying to slow down my swing close to how you describe and I'm finding myself feeling my shots much better than I ever have. Per your video instructions I've lately been trying your technique with my irons and immediately felt an improvement. I don't have the precise mechanics down yet because I'm doing this now with a prosthetic but it clearly works. I play Titleist 690mb blades and my 2i is one of my fave clubs in the bag. With your method I really feel that ball jumping off the face of the club and whole swing is just light years easier to manage. Even with my limited balance I can still end up with great, even follow through. I love it and can't wait to get back out on the course. Again, thank you for this fantastic instruction! Cheers!

You don't have those clubs if you weren't a decent player. Stay focused on what I am saying and keep practicing it. You will be able to play great golf forever. As I always say, you don't have to be strong to be loose! I am getting power through looseness not physical strength. Couple this with a little body turn and you've got it.

Hey Paul, was wondering if you could give any tips for a beginner on what side to hit from? Thanks!
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 2 ай бұрын
Well did you ever play baseball? If so I would hit from the same side. Visually you probably see it better that way. I do like the stronger hand as the top hand though. This means most righties should swing left handed and vice versa but try getting everyone to do that is not going to happen. What is your dominant hand? Have you tried swinging both ways? What feel and looks better?
@NathanEfstation21
@NathanEfstation21 2 ай бұрын
@@paulwilsongolf I am a natural right hander with right eye dominance. I started baseball as a power righty before being switched to a contact lefty so I wasn't having the illusion of being thrown at by the pitcher. I play hockey, which is my main sport, as a lefty, which this is the preferred way, or the "rule" since your dominant hand is always on the stick. I also play tennis as a righty with my backhand being so much more consistent than my forehand. I really lean on my backhand when possible. Im not necessarily a golf beginner, I have been playing for 12 years but have started to take the game more seriously in the past few years, resulting in a 34-36 handicap right handed. I recently have bought left handed clubs due to doubt creeping in that I may be on the wrong side, even though the "rule" says I should be a righty golfer. I have mainly come a cross tips saying to be trail side dominant, or pushing through the swing with the right hand, but now, as you're saying as well, Im starting to see a few more tips and suggestions saying to pull rather than push, which in that case would put me left sided, which is also a side that I have a lot of experience with. My right side seems to be my power side and my left side seems to be my consistency side. My left sided game in the short time I have had the clubs has progressed faster than the right side and I'm looking for clarification to which side i should devote the time to for the rest of my life.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 2 ай бұрын
Well, I don't want you using any hand to hit the ball as I teach powerless arms with loose wrists but watch this to understand the pressure: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j92enLFyvayxlGQ.html I love left handed swings and never have an issue with them learning a great swing. Not sure why but that's just how it is. I have taught a few lefties playing right handed that had a hard time loading the weight. Their left eye dominance kept them over the ball and the did a reverse pivot. I remember teaching a lefty and he had a massive slice. Did everything to get him to load and the next week he would be reversing again. For fun I told him to hit my club. Boom. Perfect little draws. Didn't want to change though. Seems like you can swing either way. Watch the video above. As you hit balls if you see one way is harder to coil and load to the back instep then I would go with the other way. Can always work on the hinging/rehinging regardless of the hand. We need power then work on consistency later.
@NathanEfstation21
@NathanEfstation21 2 ай бұрын
@@paulwilsongolf I apprecite that advice, thank you! Also, very interesting video about hands and grip pressure. In your mind do you see the golf swing, from a lower body perspective, like throwing a ball (a push off from the back foot ending up on the front foot)? Thats something I've seen circulating around forums and videos, or I guess I should say, how do you think about the golf swing in the lower body (now that the arms/hands have mostly been taken out of the equation)?
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 2 ай бұрын
There are many triggers. I did push from the right instep for many years. About 7 or 8 years ago I was getting hip pain from bending down teeing up millions of golf balls so for the last few years I am trying to change my trigger to just trying to not push hard. The push from the instep is a Hogan trigger Power Golf - page 62. This is what I read to get me to do it back when I was about 15 years old. This got me a 50 yard gain instantly so I kept doing it. I talk about hit here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kM95lbeIlpq7kac.html Since then I realized there are many other triggers. I give people a choice. So I have then do them all and we narrow their list down to 2, 3 or 4. I have them do each one about 10 times with a 7 iron ball teed up about a finger height. I am hoping one rises to the top and they choose to do that one for life. That is what you want. Be decisive and find what work for you then apply it to every shot ... forever. This is why choosing what side to hit the ball from is important.

My. daughter started swinging an iron at 4/5 and formalized swing coach at 6. What you say Paul is true from my perspective. She takes long beautiful backswings and smooth effortless downswings. Is she perfect of course not but she recruits the correct muscles organically due to your reasoning in your video.

Paul I hope this finds you well. Your videos have improved my golf game immensely. Can’t thank you enough. I’m using the body swing and loose wrists. Smooth and easy back and then body turn on the way down, and loose wrists hinge. My distance has gotten better. But I’m trying to get more. My hindrance is I have smaller hands. I already use the baseball grip. Yet I can still get wrist hinge. But I’m at the point if I ‘whip’ the club through any faster; I completely lose the ability to hold the club in any controlled way with my hands. Any ideas? And thanks for everything over the years.

Glad you are doing well. Well when you are whipping it you are still holding on tight. Remember ... secure grip with loose wrists. So you need to only work on the wrist joint while holding on. You can work on body too. Do the 2 drills below for 1 month: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/icx5gJV4vNCdc6c.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nrCVdMZ2vsjamIE.html

Hi Paul found that your method works great for irons.i dont think of anything on downswing orher than push off right foot to rotate belt to target. I always gave up on your method as i could not get it to work for driver until i saw your driver swing video swinging around and around thank you. I think driver swing needs to be much flatter/deeeper than with irons. Irons need to feel earlier wrist hinge whereas driver feels more like a baseball swing with flatter plane.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 6 ай бұрын
As you now see y method works great for all clubs. As for driver people always want to hammer it as hard as they can. In doing so they hit with the arms not the body. The harder they hit, the tighter the wrists the slower the club moves and the more they twist the face. Yes, the driver is longer. It naturally would swing flatter. I have said this for years. All swings are the same. They change on their own due to the length of the club. Shorter clubs swing steeper than longer clubs. Here is a tip on it from 3 years ago: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rpdmpMt238u0YKM.html You don't need an earlier release with irons. You need to be loose in the wrists allowing it to release. Watch: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oKuHmJx4xtXVqKM.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nbOGppmEv7SmeYU.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iLNkgrtk0piRaWQ.html So keep apply the trigger as you are but you need to work on the hinging and rehinging the club. Watch this too: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mLKjnqqqnNjZnKM.html There is no guessing on what to do.

Glad you are working on it. The body is a huge key. This needs constant and consistent practice. You do this in practice swings daily until you train yourself to fire your hips. Here are the 2 drills you need to practice to hit it longer than ever. Need to do these daily for 30 days as much as you can: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/icx5gJV4vNCdc6c.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nrCVdMZ2vsjamIE.html As for over the top. I have tons of tips on this. This is the person hitting with arms. This leans them left as they start down. Lean left and you will swing left. So you need to lean right. Overdo it at first. This means you will hit pushes and push fades but this doesn't matter because you are trying to get the tilt. To fix the push'push fades you simply turn more then you won't over tilt and hit it straight. Watch these: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o552q7aLuNOvdas.html (secret tip) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iMqgm9eZqLedhoE.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qch1YMurub7LfqM.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aMmAgMJ3uNWsfoE.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gdKWma2rx9nPnYE.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ppyJisxztdS1oX0.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hd-onsV1t7_bhqs.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/faxnfbR515jMmKs.html That should keep you going for a while.

Glad you see it. It is not about hitting. That will never work. Slow and easy will keep you loose. The looser you are the more speed you will generate. Once you get it you have it for life because you don't have to be strong to be loose. Keep this thought. If you want a little more in the future then fire the legs and hips a little faster. I want to give folks a bit of a tip that might help if you have naturally tight neck, back. If I'm doing something wrong Paul please let me know. In the bodyswing setup you lift the chin. I have found the chin up retracts my shoulder blades. Feels great and very athletic but because they retract at setup there is just too much tension because the neck is pulling the traps up and the blades are retraticing down. It puts too much tension in the back. What I am wondering what might be better is doing the setup and then relaxing the neck, blades. Even turn head slightly trail side to align with tilt. I find the biggest thing is making sure the arms stay away from the body because if you go to far forward your trail arm slams into the ribcage.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 9 күн бұрын
Sounds like you are lifting it up too much. Lift it enough you can clear your shoulder coming around. You certainly don't want to be tight.

Paul, have you ever seen students who have the following problem? I think "turn the shoulders, keep the lower body still" to coil back and I feel the tightness in my left side. My takeaway and top of the backswing look fine on video apart from the takeawy being pretty slooow. I get to the top with a really good hinge in my wrists (I've had to fight too long of a backswing but have been really working on that and it's now getting to the grapefruit size gap and the club is parallel to the target down the line). Then I pause at the top (sometimes this feels like an eternity to be honest cuz I'm scared I won't think lower body first so I really concentrate there) and then in my head I say "touch the legs/turn the belt buckle", but from there the results are really inconsistent lately. When I look at videos I see that my arms at the start of the downswing seem to be defying gravity and staying up far too long and going along with my shoulders and torso. If a statue was made of a golfer at the top of the backswing and he had no joints in his limbs and you turned him a little, that's how my hands and arms look during the first part of the downsing. They just stay up there. My arms are doing what your arm does when you do the "powerless arms test" where you stick out an arm and then turn the body to show how the arms move when the body does. The arm stays sticking out and not dropping as you turn in that demo. My arms follow my upper body like that (staying up in the air) during my real swing instead of falling down from the weight of the club. They eventually drop down but way too late. I'm definitely not thinking about the arms in the downswing, but my over the top look is off the charts. I've been working on curing that like crazy but nothing has stopped it even when that's all I'm working on. I don't know if just the weight of holding the club up at the top is causing my arms to tense up there and grip on too hard or what but maybe? I'm sure not thinking hit or help with my arms at the top but it's driving me nuts seeing my shoulders and arms turning in unison and going over the top instead of the club just falling down and shallowing out naturally when I turn to touch the legs. If I try a swing with just my right arm only, it drops fine. But when I put both arms on the club my hands just stay up there and don't drop until it's too late. Any drills on getting that same right arm only feeling and result once I have both hands/arms holding the club? Thanks, Paul.

This is you firing the lower way too hard. You need to start with 7 iron. Literally hit 5-10 hooks in a row. This will speed up the release. Then you go back to adding a little legs and hips. Watch your ball. This will tell you exactly how much legs and hips you need. Watch this tip. It explains it all: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mLKjnqqqnNjZnKM.html Also, stop waiting too long up there. @@paulwilsongolf Thanks, Paul. I'll give that a shot. I played a round the other day asking my playing partners to keep an eye on if I was shallowing the club or going over the top and finally heard a bit more "that was on plane" positive comments than usual. The problem was that I hit a lot of push fades just like you said might happen when working on swinging from more in to out. At least I knew that might happen so I wasn't super frustrated. I'll try hooking 5-10 at the range first at the range before adding the legs/hips like you suggested to see if I can straighten that ball flight out.

I use pxg irons. Just switch to titelist driver. Callaway 3 wood. These are clubs I like to play. Taylor sand wedge. Cameron Putter. It's all about what you like. I tell people to go to a store or fitter and try a bunch. You need to absolutely love them. The get the right shaft etc. Any negative about any club do not buy it. People who are beginners or on a budget I would know what I like or want and buy a set a few years old off of ebay then into the future get a new set as a treat once you get to a certain level. So a lot of it is personal preference. The look, feel, sound of the clubs. Then shaft. Also get fitted once you have worked on the set up.

Well that's unfortunate. What you need to do is hinge your wrists to you maximum. I have taught many people with wrist issues without a problem. What I don't like is when someone doesn't hinge to their maximum. So hinge going back to the point you can't hinge anymore the fully release it into the through swing rehinging as much and the wrist allows. Keep working it back and forth loosening the wrists but getting used to hitting those points. Then once you get the arm unit working you switch to body coiling and uncoiling.

@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 6 ай бұрын
Club companies know you do a chicken wing. They put an offset on them to get you to do a stronger grip so you hook it. Once you do you think they are the greatest things slice sliced bread (most people slice). To understand what I mean just move the butt of the grip way forward then try to do your grip. You will never do a neutral grip. You will have to put your hands on in a strong position. So if your clubs are offset you need to make sure your grip is neutral. Then hit the top and fire the lower. If the lower moves first you will hit it dead straight. Watch this one too: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mLKjnqqqnNjZnKM.html

Hey Paul, I can incorporate this pretty easily with my swing (the pause at the top was my key). It looks great on video, but the results have not been great. I hit maybe 1 in 5 good. The rest are thin, toe, or pushes. Contact is not great either. I have less confidence on the course than with my normal hand, arm and body swing. If this is the best method to power a swing, how come it does not come easily? Again, on video I look great, but results are not good. I play to a 10 and thought this would help me go to the next level, but the opposite has occurred. Paul
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 8 ай бұрын
This is a piece of the swing. If you are working on a piece how can you expect to hit great shots. This is also a drill. When you do a drill you go into "drill mode" when you don't care about the result. You care about the move you are trying to learn. It's hard to hit great shots when you stop at the top. So tee up a 7 iron and do the drill hitting 50 yard shots learning to switch to your body not hitting with your arms. As you keep doing it you get good at it then you try it in a real shot. This doesn't come easy for people because they have whacked at the ball with the arms for 30 years and they think they are going to turn them off and hit amazing shots in 5 mins. It is new and different and takes work. For me, I get people to work on the arm unit first. I get them hinging and rehinging and hooking every ball consistently. Yes, you are doing this on purpose with your arms. Once you do this you are now doing half right. You have the spin mastered. Now you switch to body rotation to straighten it out. So you hit the top and turn your belt buckle to hit the ball. Watch your ball. Pull or pull hook it means you need to turn faster. Push it turn slower or stop sliding laterally. Once you are half decent at it the last step is to turn your arms off completely not hitting or helping the shot in any way with your arms. Also, the fastest way to get this is doing practice swings. I tell people this and they insist on smashing balls as hard as they can so they never change anything. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i7ici5pzp6zTmJc.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a8V_Y6tjtrSqn2Q.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bMCVh9SU35jUnXk.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bMCVh9SU35jUnXk.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jtFnp5yqramzXX0.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b9Gnos2i27q1e5s.html Then: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iMqgm9eZqLedhoE.html

Hey Paul, I love your teaching, but I don't understand a couple of things. When studying your swing I see indications that you are adding right hand torque/uncocking during the downswing. The two giveaways are, first, the bending you get on your shaft at start of the downswing. This can only happen is you apply a counter clockwise torque at the handle (left hand down, rt hand up). Powerless hands an not create this torque. Second, the only way you can get your right hand to turnover your left just past impact is to intently do this. Powerless hands will not cross over so quickly. Perhaps there is no arm power but maybe hand and wrist input?

What you are forgetting is simple physics of mass swinging around an axis. Mass will always swing to the widest point. So once hinged at the top and you do not do anything the mass (club) will always stretch out to the widest point 100% of the time. This widest point moves ahead of the ball due to the tilt of the spine in the downswing. So yes you can release the club without purposely releasing it. Need loose wrists though. Here is my actually grip pressure: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j92enLFyvayxlGQ.html The shaft bend starting down due to my body starting first and mass following which bends the shaft so no this would not indicate I am using my arms. Once you see the video you will see my pressure and what is happening. Also, here his surprise when he sees my right hand numbers as I hit the ball.

I understand that in the downswing the lower body needs to fire first because it's slower than the upper body. The intent is for the fast upper body to catch up to the slow lower body. But with the hips firing so early, is there any concern about them clearing out too soon before impact?

My teaching is based on Iron Byron since 1999. My first concept for the 8 years before that was that I was going to make my students look like pros and I can do that within a few moves. 1999 I saw a looping video of Iron Byron. All pros match Iron Byron so I was making people copy the machine when I was making people look like pros. After the machine came into the picture I started using the machine to explain the swing as it only does 3 things and hits it perfectly. This is why my teaching is simple. So Percy was on the right track with his teaching.

Good afternoon Paul I have a broken body but still get out and slap it around on a regular basis. The problem I have is on practice swings I have a full follow thru. But when I hit the ball I have a super sawed off follow thru like older Palmer.. is there any thoughts on this?? I know this is causing me to be tense. And I can not smoke a lb of pot to get limber and loose before I plan..lol. Thank you for your help.

I am a left-handed golfer with a very dominant right hand. Do you see any disadvantages to your teaching?
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 7 ай бұрын
Nope. See this as an advantage. Most people want to hit with the dominant hand which for most is hard to turn off. Watch this video of my grip pressure then think of your right hand being dominant. It's a long video but about 1/3 through we go through my numbers: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j92enLFyvayxlGQ.html Once you see them think about your own swing. Now for lefties I like them to draw it. To do this I get them manually rolling the wrists to get the spin then switching to body once the person can hook it. To do this you need to manually roll it for a while until mastered. This means you will be feeling your hands and arms to do this. Once you can put hook spin on every shot and you are using the body the last step is to turn your arms off completely. So focus on the steps. Start with these: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g55ma7SkudKrpGg.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ppqmdLaetODPgJs.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hJOeerBn3rSbaWQ.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r651qZp4nsCZXWQ.html

In slow motion of your downswing, your hands are coming down to address position as fast as your hips unwinding. It took me so long to understand. I bet most of the high handicapper their hands are still on top as u r unwinding. Can you please discuss about grip end position in relation to unwinding hips ? It is very critical move not to hook the ball.

This is 80 to 90% so they literally are only turning their hips 45 degrees which will never generate any power. This is from hitting. They move the fast arms before the slow body. I am moving the slow body ahead of the fast arms.

A question Paul. My average swing speed is 84 mph. Sad know. I have never swung hard even when I was a 2 handicapp when I was younger. I'm 57 now. My instructor and everyone I play with says my swing is "so pretty" and smooth. Problem is no power. I use my arms more than my lower body. I have to be careful due to previous back surgeries not to over rotate but I can turn as long as everything is moving at the same time. Do you think doing what you say in this video can increase my swing speed? I'm small also. 5'8 155lbs. Thank you.

I like the fact that you were a 2 hdcp and have done this before. Someone along the way you must have taken a break from golf. I have helped countless people who have done this. When you take a break you come back to it and because the ball is stationary you hit with arms. This is due to human nature. So all we have to do is get you using the legs and hips again. For me, this is never an issue to get someone who has done this in the past to do it again. The problem is people who have never done it getting them to do it. So watch this video and think if you can swing this hard with no pain: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h8V8ipqf0prXo58.html So, if I can do nothing and get it to 100mph you can too. Now lets say both of our arms and wrists are super loose. We would both be doing the same thing so why would my ball travel farther? I am turning faster. Not so fast that I would hurt myself but enough to get the body rotation ahead of the arms. This is the key. When you hit with the arms they outpace your slow body so your hips are not open at impact. Instead you are facing the ball as you hit it. So I need to you to turn the arms off completely then on a daily basis you need to do practice swings doing the drills below: Turn off arms and get lag: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zs1_qK6C1bvQZWg.html The Feeling of Letting Go: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gqeVndl1x93DkXU.html Get Your Body Moving kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iq6dabac2azNlp8.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nrCVdMZ2vsjamIE.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aa6liZqTsr6mZJc.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g5toqclksbPbgmQ.html So start with those. Just see it differently. You have done this before. You are just getting it back.
