In this tip I show you a golf transition drill that will help you make the switch from an arms swing to a body swing. Start using your body to hit the ball and you will hit solid irons and longer drives.
This drill is designed to switch how you think on the way down. While doing it, you're not even thinking about the ball and hitting great shots with your irons and driver. You are thinking about the movement.
Start out doing this golf transition drill with irons first. Then gradually move up to driver once you get a feel for it. Also, start out slowly. This can be tricky at first especially if you have had an arms swing for a long time.
If you don't know a body swing is powerful, effortless and pain free. This means you can literally use it forever. This is why I teach this type of swing and on of the most important elements of it is the transition. Give this transition drill a try and start turning off your arms and start using you body. If you do, you will hit the ball better than ever.

I’m 75, and I’ve been using Paul’s swing methodology for over 12 years now. I play my best golf when (1) I’m totally relaxed and tension-free, and (2) I pause slightly at the top before starting down. I need that slight hesitation at the top to engage the “from the ground up “ kinetic chain that Paul teaches. If I try to blend the top of the backswing with the start down, as many players do, I tend to slide laterally and hit the ball with my arms. A slight pause at the top allows me to fire the legs and hips first. The point is, do whatever you have to do to let the lower body initiate the downswing and be the engine that whips the arms and club through impact. This is such an easy and pain-free way to play the game, it’s well worth the time and effort to learn it just as Paul teaches it. This is a great drill and, in my opinion, the very best way to learn the downswing in the proper sequence.

Yes. I used to have a slight pause and I played decently with no lessons a poor grip a cupped wrist and a sway! Now 30 years later I don't do any of these things but have a more " modern" swing. It is very accurate but tough on the body staying in the side bend through impact. I've been trying out Paul's swing and am pleased with the results thus far. Ball flight a little higher and distance is better on the good strikes.If I do use the arms first the results are dismal. The pause seems to work wonders. As well as shaking out the tension in the shoulders and arms at setup.I will stick with it because I'm not getting any younger and want to play as long as I can stand on two legs. Even one leg if I had to!

I have been trying to improve my golf game by watching KZfaq videos. After watching quite a few over the last year or so I discovered your videos. I have been studiously watching your videos for a few months, using my outside golf net to hit balls. I have been able to easily understand each of your videos. Today I played in the local scramble, having to pull 15 points. I decided to put your loose wrists, hung and unhinge and using my body to store energy techniques to the test. After 18 holes I had 26 points, plus 11 points and won my flight. As I was standing there waiting to receive my money I mentioned that I had learned from KZfaq videos. A guy standing by said he also had learned from KZfaq particularly from a guy named Paul Wilson. I said me too. And then we both simultaneously said “loose wrists”. I want to thank you for your videos, keep up the good work.

That "stop at the top" (i.e. hesitation) to make a mental switch to the lower body is a wonderful thought. Also helps to slow things down and to get the arms out of the swing. One can easily do this on the course. Brilliant!! (Similar to how you teach pitch shots on your Ignition site.)

In each tip I explain it in a way you can understand and at least try it. Don't expect miracles. Working on your swing is work. Some things you get quick. Others may take days/weeks/months. The fact you play hockey is a good thing. Use your body (slap shot) wrists (wrist shot). I too was a hockey player as a kid.

Awesome, easy, muscle memory drill Paul. I can hang out in the back yard and do these reps off and on at any time I feel like, and they translate to a smooth transition. Doesn't hurt to have a little lag in there at all, like these young kids you talk about. This tip really clicked for me. The two tiered approach you so clearly discuss here is intuitive to me and easy to execute mentally. I think that is important for me, because it will quickly lead me to the physical turn.. The other great visual was that you start the swing by shifting the weight by turning through a circle and not a sway. Guilty of that. Elvis would be proud of my swaying, rocking and rolling.. I will continue to work on this and I know I will see results by the beginning of next season. Thank you so much for sharing!

Just tried this out at home and it really opened my eyes. Starting the downswing with a hip turn is the key to power in the golf swing. I was taking slow and deliberate swings using this method and I still generated clubhead speed with no effort other than ensuring I was using my hips and lower body on the downswing. I've watched every one of Paul's videos and will continue to rewatch for as long as I play golf!

I am a mental midget. Started playing golf seriously at age 59 when I retired. I am 72. I went from trying to break 100, then 90, then 80. I was an arm swinger. I bought new drivers every two years because of the promise of more distance. No joy. I also sliced the driver a lot. I applied lots of band aids to my swing in order to get my handicap down to a 12. But I knew there was a "secret" to hitting my driver further than 180 -200 yards and not having to use fairway woods to reach every par 4. About two months ago I started watching Pauls videos and using my body to swing the club. Wow. No shit. Not saying I have it perfected - but I can now effortlessly drive the ball at least 20 -30 yards further - and almost always without slicing! I play 3 or 4 times a week at the same golf course, so the improvement is very obvious. Thank you!!!

Paul - thanks so much for the "easy to understand" instructional videos. This "uncoiling" move that is initiated by the lower body makes such a huge difference. It helps me generate smooth acceleration through the hitting or perhaps I should say the "impact" zone. This concept is not easy as you have stated but once you get a hang of it, it is very "liberating." I know I will have to work to engrain the sequencing action (the separation of the top from the lower body) but it will happen in due time. Thanks again Paul for the straight-talk videos. I love your occasional sarcasm and gestures. Lastly, who was the single person who gave this video a "thumbs-down?"
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you like the tips. I just try to keep it simple so people get it. Glad you felt the hips. If so, you can keep doing it. The more you turn off the arms the more you turn on the body. So relax the arms as you do it. There are idiots out there that gives thumbs down to everything. You can never get rid of them. I just have to keep making people better. The snowball is rolling downhill no. Just a matter of time.

In the last couple of months, I've followed so many golf coaches to try and improve my game and get the basics of my swing. You are by far the best teacher and the only one I admire. You've made so many things simpler for me, and my swing never looked so good. I particularly love the wrist hinge instructions. I don't even care if I hit the ball further (which I am now :-) ), I only care that I hit it well. Thank you for all the tips. Keep up the good work , Paul.

Thank you for you kind works. I truly appreciate it. Simple is the name of the game. You need to understand what you are even trying to do. This is half the battle. People work on things and have no idea how they fit into the big picture. So they try something and it doesn't work so they stop doing it. If you see the importance and if I can make it simple enough you will do it and get some success. See some good shots and you will want to do it. You sound like you are definitely getting it. Keep up the good work and keep working on it throughout the winter. Next season will be great.

just joined.....great drill/will try. I am predominantly RH i.e. play tennis/write RH but golf/play hockey LH so there is very little, if any, instruction that deals with this issue. So in this example where u throw a golf ball w your right hand as a RH golfer to engage the lower body, that seems natural. However, for me to throw the golf ball w my LH would be pretty funny!
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 3 жыл бұрын
I have taught countless people in this same scenario. There are advantages and disadvantages. The right hand is the stronger hand which is great for the grip and arm unit. It's bad for the body swinging left handed due to not being able to fire properly and hard enough. The key is moving the head as you coil back. This will allow you to load the weight on the instep. Then you need a left sided trigger to uncoil. This would be turn the right hip back, lock the right leg. This uncoils the lower with a right sided trigger in a left handed swing. The tricky part will be moving your head as you coil back. Easy way is to look at the label or dimple on the back of the ball as you coil back. Keep looking at it as you fire the lower with a right sided trigger. Need to be angled behind it as you hit the ball. I usually don't have a problem with lefties. They pick it up pretty quick. I also prefer lefties to draw it which they never usually have a problem doing.

I found it useful to get set up and then imagine that my arms were paralyzed but i still had to play the shot Only way to do that is to use your body, both going back and coming forward. Some how the hit always manages to occur despite the "paralysis". It's kind of fun actually.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting thought. Keep in mind though you do need to set the top. If you are not a great position then you would be working on getting the position. This would mean you would be feeling your arms as you work on it. Paralyzed arms in this case would be in the downswing not hitting or helping it.

Hey Paul, I've been watching your videos for a while now, as soon as I saw your videos something clicked for me and I realized how I was doing things wrong. Now I consistently hit the ball straight. However shot-shaping and hitting the ball far are still an issue. (Yes I am using my lower body and instead of using my arms. Also I learned by you how to finally rotate/coil properly, I haven't put in practice yet, that was probably one factor.) I came across something in golf where pros slightly squat in the swing, and so far everything you've taught lines up with what they do. But I have never seen you address squatting slightly and or how to do it in the golf swing and using your hips and legs along with it , is this something you approve of, or mentioned, if so where?
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 2 жыл бұрын
The squat will happen if you are firing your legs and hips properly. I wouldn't say it's a squat on purpose. It would be a lowering due to your body tilting behind the ball more in the downswing and your head lowering to look at the ball. Keep in mind you have a quarter second from the top to impact. You think squat and you've already hit the ball. So forget the squat. Choose a downswing trigger and learn how to fire your lower body to hit the ball.

Paul - Sorry been blowing up your youtube pages but this information is really good. One item I wanted to mention, when you take the longer back swing with the relaxed arms, when you swing with the lower body first it solves the weight distribution issue and allows you plenty of time to get into your lead foot and strike the ground correctly. I see a lot of high cap AM's take short swings and they can never get into their lead side and they make that choppy old man swing, even when they are 30 and 40. I try not to look because I don't want to visualize that ugly short weak swing in my minds eye. Just curious if you look away when you are playing with horrible golfers? One of the items I find difficult is when they asked me did I see where their ball went. Of course I didn't I refuse to watch their swing.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 9 ай бұрын
For sure you need to do a decent backswing. This Jon Rahm swing is tough. Not to say I don't give this as a drill for some people as the shorter swing can get their body moving but people already doing a short swing and not using their body is a problem. I would lengthen that person for sure. I don't care about other golfers. Doesn't bother me at all. I am really in my own world. I see what they do but it doesn't register. Well to get the effortless swing I would be starting with the grip and loosening the wrists. Everyone wants to hit hard. If I can at least get their wrists looser they are on their way. They will hit some good shots etc. From there you add body. Not hitting in the downswing is really the last step. In colder climates you do practice swings working on these pieces all winter. No ball means no distraction. So you will start out the season playing great instead of taking a break and having to work on it all summer when really you should be playing and having fun.

You were doing it too much. This move to the left would happen on its own as you fire the lower body as I suggest. You are 80/20 into the back foot as you near the top. You then go to 50/50 as you are coming down then 90/10 into impact and through swing. If you were 80/20 on your back foot and you went to 50/50 would your head not move forward? So stop thinking about and learn to coil and uncoil. People are watching slow motion swings and trying to teach these moves that happen in nanoseconds to people to are average golfers. Never going to happen. Keep it simple and stop watching other tips and listening to other people. This will only make you confused.

When I use the body and turn the arms off I seem to pull a lot more left more often. Maybe I fire the lower body to fast and hands are too far behind?

You are leaning left as you do it. Probably shifting everything on top of the left foot right at the top. You need to stay behind it as you fire. Watch: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eOBymsyGzd_Wcmg.html and: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qch1YMurub7LfqM.html

Great!! It’s difficult for hack golfers NOT to use their arms...I tell myself “My arms are wet noodles that just follow my body!”...Thanks Paul

There is certain the understanding of how that is going to produce distance. There are new feelings so you have to trust it is going to work. Then it is telling yourself not to hit the object sitting in front of you. So it does take work. You have to see it enough in practice that you want to do it. Then when you play you start off hitting every shot at 50% and build it up. Start off swinging like a maniac and you will never do it out there.

How long do I exercise this drill until it’s there?

This would vary from person to person. Just keep doing it until you feel you are at least thinking down there. If you are thinking about it you will probably do it. If you just keep hitting then you will never get it.

I’ve struggled with handle driving the club thru the hit zone which makes the club head deloft and leaving club face open. I can’t get myself to rehinge I’m hinging but not rehingeing. What video would help me the most?

Sometimes I can even hit the ball. Sometimes body and hand no sync together. Hand too fast or slow. So hard!

So you need to work on your swing. Work on the arm unit first. Hinge and rehinge until you rarely ever hit the ball with slice spin. Once you can do that you know what the ball is going to do before you do it. Then you would be working on your body to power the swing and hit it straight. So grip, setup, hinge/rehinge first. Then body. Grip: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oLeKf9Npx6yRh6s.html Hinge Rehinge: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bMCVh9SU35jUnXk.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oJedhph82p61YWQ.html

Yes, one swing all golfers. Anytime your back hurts you are hitting with arms. This is a violent move. If you try to do that all locked up it can and will hurt your body. Stand taller. Allow your head to move back. Keep it too still and this will hurt your back too. You are coiling in circular movement. Couple this with loose wrists and you basically have the swing.
