Use a thumbtack to start a pilot hole instead. I wound up in an ER at 2 in the morning with an entire xacto blade in my finger. Hurt like hell, bled like crazy, and it was embarrassing trying to explain to the docs what "drilling Terminator barrels" meant on my intake report.

I don't play Warhammer anymore, I just make dioramas. So drilling is essential for the aesthetic of a piece that is going to be looked at close up. But yeah always use a pushpin or thumb tack to make the starer point rather than a blade. I like to use a map pin as there is more to hold and push against when making that first indent. Can get a much better starting hole too. I have worked in emergency hand surgery for several years and one thing I learned from that is there are nerve and tendons all the way up and you do not want to damage these. Be safe with knives people.

I also use the wowstick, it is an absolute unit when you need to pin metal models. I used to dread drilling holes into the metal, it would take so long and the holes would be crooked or off centre all the time with the pressure I needed to apply to the pin vice. With the electric drill, all you need to do is hold model and drill steady and then push the button. Genius!

I dont drill my barrels. I can never get them to be perfectly centered. This makes my mild OCD twitch, so I would rather avoid the anxiety. I do paint the barrel ends black with the edge picked out in gun metal.

Drilling out Tyranid barrels is like, how do I want this guns orifice to look.... 😂

"If Games Workshop wanted you to drill your barrels out, why don't they do them for you?" - It likely would add difficulty to the casting process to have the barrels hollowed out like that, and who cares what GW thinks anyway?

If you are drilling stormbolters, there is a file for a 3d print that helps you perfectly aligns your drill bit.

The point is that the model looks better. If you don't care about that then don't do it, just let those people who like to complain about it do so. I haven't done it in like a year because all of the models I use are resin printed at home and basically all of my STLs with guns already come with holes in them.

I use a sewing pin. Heat it up with a candle or lighter and then shove it into the barrel. This provides a great pilot hole for the pin vice that I then use to make it look nice.

I just use a completely unpowered pin vice modellers drill I got from hobby craft. Perfectly serviceable, very easy to use, nice and cheap. All my barrels are drilled on my new 30k Thousand Sons army so far with this. Dead easy to do, just be careful and go slow. If you do a full squad’s barrels *before* assembly it only takes a few minutes. Generally if I even bother with a pilot hole, I would use a smaller drill bit on its own without the pin vice, but I usually don’t bother.

Drill them or not, it's up to each person individually; I completely agree with that. I don't drill mine as I have issues with my hands (loss of feeling due to injuries).

Wowstick changed my hobby. Hated fiddling with the pin vise, magnetising and barrel drilling is way nicer with it. Gonna have a super easy time pinning my big metal pegaso world models as well.

Keep the drill running when you pull it out of a hole you have drilled, stops it binding and you are less likely to snap the bit.

I do prefer a pin vice. I have a dremel with a slow geared extension for drilling but it’s far more accurate to go slow with the pin vice. Exacto is a no go! A decent pin vice with bits only costs like AU$30-50 so save yourself the pain. A simple large sewing needle for pilot holes will set you back $3 at Spotlight, wrap a bit of electrical tape around the top for some grip. Simples! 🙂

Once you get a new tool, the urge to use it on everything is very strong.

I've used some old "finger drill" for about 15 years now. It add so much to the mini to have actual hole on the barrel (I don't drill the sides) and takes so little time that it's pretty much mandatory thing to do 😆 With good quality drill bits (I use 1 and 2mm) it's easy to get it at the center too without any sorta pilot hole 👍

Use a thumbtack to create yer pilot If the hole is off-centre use an exacto blade to round it out/center it. Just place the blade in the hole and spin it to shave a more centrred circle Also dont waste yer money on one of those "stick" drills. Get yerself a small rechargeable dremel. (or other rotary tool) They run like 30-40 use and not onl will they last longer on a charge, they accept other bits for other tasks and dont limit you to drilling holes. Couple that with a set of small bits from a hardware store and yer set.

I got a sculpting tool that is a piece of wood dowel with a sharp pointy metal spike on it. It's good for starting, much easier and safer than the hobby knife.

Tricky spot on the model to repair if you mess up, and if you don't have a good set of steps to get it dead center, it's very easy to look super wonky. As with painting freehand for the first time, or trying NMM, or any other slightly advanced aspect of the hobby, it's up to you if and when you wanna give it a try, don't let anybody tell you you have to do anything. With growing experience in the hobby you'll be exposed to more aesthetic choices and styles, and your tastes will change continuously. I didn't think removing the flash lines on models was worth the hassle, now I don't wanna skip it because I enjoy the end result better without visible lines on the side of my models. I didn't care for elaborate (or really any) basing for my models, now I actually enjoy doing it. I didn't use to drill my barrels, now I've found a method to do it the way I like (drill bit same size as the bolter barrel or a little bigger, triangular tip at about 100° angle and nice sharp edge to just dig out a fairly shallow cone shape, gives a more believably industrial sort of inset look if you don't go too deep and leave a bit of a rim on the outer edge of the barrel, then carefully drill out the center of the cone shape with a much smaller bit like the one shown in the video, or a thumb tack. Also works for plasma pistols etc, if you just do the cone shape you'll have a surface to indicate plasma glow shining out of the front of the barrel). These little hurdles can definitely stagnate the hobby enjoyment, especially if your first exposure is "Why aren't you doing this very nitpicky thing you've never heard of and should know about? Your fun is wrong!" I didn't need anyone to berate me to do it, I just one day felt confident and experienced enough to try it. If you're starting out in the hobby, learn the basics, find creators you enjoy watching on youtube that'll expose you to new aspects of the hobby, and grow at your own pace.

There are a bunch of cheap 15-20$ rotary tools with rechargable batteries on Amazon and everywhere, use one for a year with no issues, they are a bit bigger (but still small enough), but also more universal, you can buy many cheap accessories like cutting disks, polishing etc also they usually have a few speeds

Thumb tack to mark a pilot hole, not used the WOW Stick but if it can go in reverse you can push in while the bit is going in reverse to create a pilot divot aswell before going forward with the hole, do it drilling into framing of homes all the time

An archemedies drill is a good alternative to the classic pin drill. The wow drill looks good though.

I back the wow stick on a whim and was very very happy with the product I would recommend it

Rather than use a hobby knife, if you're into RC vehicles, there is a took called RC body hole reamer that works great for creating precise pilot holes. It's brutally sharp and pointy and makes it far easier to get a reliable centered hole than wiggling around a hobby knife.

I wonder if some sort of mini drill press could be made to accurately drill out guns. maybe something using a DC 6V Mini Metal N20 Gear Motor and an appropriate drill chuck and with an adjustable clamp that would hold the gun upright. A left-right back N-forth kinda deal so you can get it centred.

I use a thumbtack as well. I learn my lesson drill bit in my thumb and 23 stitchs I learned.

I prefer drilled barrels, but I'm absolutely terrible at centering holes. The last time I tried it, I ruined a bolt pistol because the barrel was too small and the smallest drill bit I had still nicked the side. I was very lucky that the plastic cement weld was weak and that I was able to rip it off. It was for a kitbash, so I can replace it with any other bolt pistol, preferably one with a larger barrel. Grey Knight stormbolters are the worst though. There's no reference for where the holes should be, so I drilled mine all over the place. I might fill them with Green Stuff and try again at some point.

I find it funny that the solution to not having aluminium craft material was to use folded up foil as opposed to a drinks can.

Could also get a pin chuck for other electric screw drivers such as the es121, which would be more useful than just a tiny baby drill.

Tip for any other pro-drillers who find the newly drilled barrel edges too "sharp": - Whip a tiny amount of plastic cement into and around the barrel hole, to slightly dissolves and smoothen out any harsh edges.

Having been through some dental technician basics in my first semesters of (unsuccessfully) attempting to study dentistry I learned that the rotary tools on the workbenches in the workshop were awesome. Combined with the bits meant to be used on crowns, prosthetics (we all have ones only used in these training courses and they were never to be used on stuff that gets into people's mouthes just on stuff done for training dummies) and I secretly drilled out my barrels with these tools. The bits can be used on a normal dremel or similar tool so yea... With some practice it's quite easy and unless you have shaky hands it is perfectly fine to hold on to the piece your working on. As there isn't really a way to practically fix a dental crown to something so you can work on it without holding it we learned to work with drill bits, polishing bits and grinding bits on small objects while holding said tiny object. And yea... Using a SHARP scalpel or hobby knife blade to do the pilot hole works. Yes, this involves care and cautioun but it's not rocket science and not russian roulette... Yes, there is a small chance of poking oneself... But unless you do stuff forcefully which isn't necessary unless your tools are blunt it's really unlikely to poke oneself and even if it happens it's oftentimes just a superficial little sting as without force one can stop a slip up pretty quickly. Have some respect for the capabilities and sharpness of your tools but don't be afraid of them. Same thing with kitchen knives. I really think that people are to afraid and overprotective when it comes to sharp objects. Learning to use such things in a controlled environment as a kid is possible. There always is a small risk for cuts but when done with proper supervision it will never be anything truly terrible. Learning new skills always involves slip ups and as kids will fall learning to walk, will fall learning to ride a bike and will make mistakes learning to write they might get a cut learning how to cut vegetables or hit their thumb while learning how to put a nail in the wall. While reasonable safety measures are definitely a good thing I sea no reason in sheltering kids by never ever allowing them to touch certain things. I believe that teaching how to use things in a controlled way at an appropriate age (that can be individual as each kid ages and matures completely different) is better than all over bans. I learned to light candles, how to cut several types of groceries, how to split small pieces of firewood and how to carve off the bark of a branch to turn it into a walking stick and other simple woodcarving as a kid or very young teenager. I cut myself. Never ever even close to something that needed professional treatment. But I also never felt the need to secretly use a lighter, secretly cut up stuff etc. as I knew that there would be occasions I would be free to light a candle or to cut an onion or to sit around whittling sticks into arrows... Safety measures are good but overprotection can lead to a lack of proper understanding of the real potential for dangerbin objects and situations.

Just to be an agent of chaos... use a hobby drill.. with a stand.. to side drill Into aluminium tube.. sat in a section of v channel to find center.. cut off the barrel on the model and replace :p

to make the pilot holes please get a scratch awl believe me so much safer and so much easier

One of the biggest helps, is getting GOOD drill bits. Makes such a difference.

The best drills for this are PCB carbide bit/drills, they go from 0.1mm to 2mm so you can have varied barrel bores.

Why are you not spinning the blade to mark the pilot hole. Center the blade tip to the middle of the barrel, give it a quick twist and, boom, ready to drill. Wowstick is awesome. I love mine. Never going back to my pin vise.

I'd use a hand drill for anything bigger than a model, although maybe a low power one or a dremel.

Aside from drilling barrels it seems good for drilling holes for magnets, if it has a bit big enough to make a hole for one

Having jammed a pin vise into my hand, I respect her fear. Still drill all my barrels but wish GW would model this for the ridiculous prices they charge. I've also seen plenty of barrel drilling mistakes GW has made in their promo photos. So if I'm slightly off center on my holes, I don't worry about it if GW can't be bothered to get it right. Something I do in addition to what was mentioned in the video, is actually carve out the guide hole. I move my exacto blade in a circular motion that ends up making a conical hole. Making changes to how you rotate the blade makes it much easier to get a centered hole and leaves a steadier starter hole. The drill seems unnecessary. I've never had to turn a pin vise more than a few times and the slow control it offers is more advantageous than speed.

There are different bits depending on the material that will be drilled.

Different colored "muzzle flashes" on little wire to just slide into the barrel to show different DoT affects or etc

Maybe you have little fingers, but the Citadel pin vice looks enormous. I got a much smaller one off of ebay or amazon that's about half the size with about 20 bits which instinctively seems like it'd be easier to use on tiny models.

I drill bolters and flamers and but I will never drill plasma, lasguns or particular xenos weapons like drukhari splinter weapons, particularly in the case of plasma I don't think it's necessary, youre going to paint the gun glowing with energy anyway and lasguns actually make no sense to do it, but some things are just far too small to accept a drill bit and compromise the shape of the item (like splinter weapons, or skitarii stuff)

the biggest issue with those drilled barrels is that the bolter ammo is too bit to get through that tiny little hole you added

Tons of reviews for the Wowstick say it has a bunch of runout (the bit doesn't stay straight but wobbles back and forth as it rotates) and you can literally see it happening to her as she tries to drill in this video, and I've seen another video someone posted in a review for a different drill where he shows you how much it's wobbling, because the part that holds the bit is cheap plastic. Also apparently you can't get replacement bits and customer service ignores you. Thing sucks. I bought a Nogarmy. We'll see how it goes.

Hot damn I was using the traditional pin drill to drill out barrels and it slipped and went right through the tip of my thump in the right side out the left just missed the bone, I assume. Be careful.

Best not to have so much drill sticking out, the longer it is the more wander you get and you end up with off centre elliptic holes, if you want a 3mm deep hole, expose 3mm of drill, and mark the centre with a pin instead of the exacto blade which is imprecise and also fraught with danger, Use a finger to slow the rotation of the electric drill so it does not go bunta on first contact, all in all a piece of piss 😆

i have a hilarious and fun story about drilling, i was drilling a hole for a magnate and the drill bit snapped shattered really, and the drill slipped and the drill bit went in one side of my little finger and out the other side of my finger, and through several nerves, and i had to pull it out myself, there was blood everywhere, i still do not have the the feeling back, also the shattered bits shot off and shreded my other figures

I dont see the point in using a drill at all tbh, if you stab the tip of your craft knife into the middle of the barrel and spin the knife round it cuts a perfect circle without any risk of it travelling.. obvious not as deep but you really dont need it to be to get the right look
