Oh, the bit about the American tourists in the bright clothes is so spot on! I've heard it said that the one way for an Englishman, an Irishman, a Welshman and a Scotsman to suddenly bury their historic rivalries and all be on the same side, is for an American tourist to enter the pub. 😂

I don't understand the kids nowadays, since we were around 14-15yrs old getting served in the pub was our Holy grail. You learn so much about life, the do's & dont's, social etiquette but most of all how much bloody fun they were. I've had bad nights too but the vast majority were brilliant and a right of passage of sorts. I still love a good pint in a good local boozer, give yourselves a shake gen z or you're gonna miss out.🍻🍺

I agree, i started at 16 in the pubs, town friday saturday night, Thats why so many 16 years olds, had facial hair in the 80's, to make us look older, there was very little ID checks, we knew the ones that did and stayed clear, for my 18th birthday, i got my workmans club card as my birthday present from my father, which was the norm back then

Boozers are very variable, in terms of who goes there and what kind of atmosphere it has. The only way to know what the different pubs in your area are like is to visit all of them. You have sports pubs, music pubs, kids pubs which are in the middle of a high school catchment area which frequently have a load of underage drinkers show up, you have old man pubs, you have pubs nearby to football grounds which are always full of fans of that team and if you aren't you better not go there, you have police pubs, where you can find off duty coppers if you need one in a hurry, food pubs which do a "carvery" and are full of families at the weekend having a roast dinner with a pint, and chill pubs where anyone can go and just have a nice chat with friends. It just depends, and seedy neighbourhoods have seedier pubs. Pubs that host live music are very important to developing bands, giving them somewhere to gig and hone their skill as performers, as part of Britain being a major exporter of pop music. So much so that music pubs even spawned their own genre at the end of the 1970s and into the early 1980s: Pub Rock, which combined blues, funk, jazz and '50s style rock and roll, in reaction against the hippies and prog rock and the kind of reggae that skinheads wanted to listen to. Highlights include Dr Feelgood, Ian Dury and the Blockheads and The Motors, plus a host of bands you've never heard of who were just solid gigging musicians plugging away without a lot of record sales.

And some of the biggest names started out as pub bands… I saw Fleetwood Mac, and their friendly rivals, Chicken Shack, playing in pubs (Chicken Shack's piano player and occasional vocalist, Christine Perfect, married Mac's John McVie and later joined the rival band). The Stones, Yardbirds (Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page), Thin Lizzy, and many other great names honed their craft in pubs and college gigs.

There are: Family pubs - a play area is set aside for the kiddies and a children's menu. Food pubs - more like restaurants. Sports pubs - pool, dominoes, darts, televised sport etc. 'Young' pubs - near colleges and unis, where they play loud music and sell 'three for one' shots. Town Centre pubs - Let your hair down, drink a lot, meet the opposite sex, then go to a club/curry house. There will be bouncers on the door. Generic pubs - cheap beer, average food, lots of gaming machines. 'Old' pubs - comfy seats, open fires, bar snacks, guest beers, dogs allowed and a pub quiz/bingo once a week. Country pub - like old pub + food + daytime family pub. Then, there are bars... cocktail, micro, craft... You can find the place for you. I have frequented each and every type of pub, in my time. Bless 'em all!

we have a 'spoons locally near Bletchley Park (Enigma...WW2 code breakers etc) that was The Bletchley Arms but is now called "Captain Ridley's Shooting Party" . The name comes from 1937, when around 150 men and women from MI6 (yes, James Bond MI6) were trying to see how the newly aquired Bletchley Park would be of use in the probably upcoming war effort. To explain away their descent onto the town of Bletchley, their cover story was that they were part of "Captain Ridley's Shooting Party". A bunch of us meet most Wednesdays, often at this 'Spoons as it does food, coffee, drinks, is kinda a bar/restaurant/coffee shop and is an eclectic mix of people. Of our group there a couple I've know almost 35 years, ex-house mates, and new friends. We talk shit, have a laugh, is very nice.

Billy Connolly has a fantastic routine about Pubs. It's about how the poor and working class folk are more in common with the upper class folk. It sounds strange but how Billy explains it really makes sense and it's things I've seen with living in a small country town where we have the country pubs. I do have issues with that. I'd say that the small town country pubs are the traditional pubs. And what they refer to in the video as a traditional pub is more like a pub chain franchise. But Billy has this great story about how the poorest people in the pub and the richest people in the pub always get along and the middle class people come into the pub and order expensive drinks to try and show that they have good taste and a disposable income. While the very rich and the very poor are all drinking the same cheap beer. they're playing darts, they're playing dominoes, they're playing cards together. The middle class folks are drinking Pimms and watching the tennis on the TV. The poor and the rich are together watching the football making fun of the Middle class... Billy explains it a lot better than me, obviously.

Oh ladies' night... there's always that one friend who cries either when she sees a bloke she fancies, or a song comes on that reminds her of an ex, the ladies traditionally go to the toilets in groups of two or more - usually to share makeup, but they all pile into the same cubical (stall) together and whilst trying to maintain a conversation whilst their friend takes their turn to pee. Eye contact whilst peeing is not a problem!

The smoking ban had a terrible effect on non-smokers like me. I would be sitting with my friends (mainly smokers) when they'd all decide to go outside for a puff. "Look after our coats" they would say, leaving me sitting alone and forlorn at the table while they stood outside having a great time chatting. Sad days. Now i live in Tokyo I have to deal with a complete reversal, where it is illegal to smoke on the street, but legal in bars, and given Japanese bars are tiny you are often enveloped in smoke. I've had to get used to the odour permeating my clothes all over again. Still, at least no-one is asking me to keep an eye on their coats!

A big change was the democratization of pub spaces. In the past (pre-1980s?) pubs often had two sections, the 'public' bar and the 'Saloon/Lounge' bar. The public bar was usually for the working classes and would often have a darts board and sometimes bar games. The 'Saloon' bar, on the other hand, would typically be for the middle classes. Having said this, it was always self-selecting. Some pubs (including my brother's small town pub) still retain a little of this division.

Pubs/Taverns/Inns are like churchs, the focal point of gatherings in any community. Was easy to find the pub, just look for the church spire/tower, and it would be nearby. Urban development has made this less easy, but nothing that a quick Google doesn't resolve.

I have to agree with the comment about local pubs and how "old folk" eye newcomers with deep suspicion. My mum told me a story how just after she and my dad were married, she and my dad took my Granda and Nanna (my mum's father & mother) down to my dad's local. My Grandad took a seat and they were happily chatting for about half an hour when this old bloke comes up to him and taps him on the shoulder. The conversation went sort of this way.... Him: "You're sitting in my seat" Grandad: "Pardon?" Him: "You're sitting in my seat" Grandad: "Is your name on it?" Him: "No, but your sitting in my seat" Grandad: "If your name isn't on it, then that's not my problem Him: "Your sitting in my seat" Grandad: "Tell you what mate, once I have finished having a drinks. You can have my seat when I leave. Apparently the old guy wasn't too happy and walked away in a huff. He spent the rest of the evening sitting at the bar eyeing daggers at my grandad. As soon as my grandad got up to leave, the old guy litterally jumped into the seat. Not sure if that territorial thing is still around.

You could walk into a good pub in the morning and still be in there at 2am the next day. Tip: Don't be fake or people will avoid you, just be yourself and the locals will be more likely to accept you there. A good way to start is befriending the Barperson, as locals come in they'll often be the ones to get you talking with them and breaking the ice.

I've been to 12 different states in the US - You dont have anything close to a pub. We also have bars in the UK, including sports bars, they are very different to pubs. Bars: We have sports bars, wine bars, cocktail bars, music bars, lounge bars, airport bars. Pubs: We have local, chain, country, family, gastro (more like a restaurant), town, city, sports, village , micro breweries. As a rule of thumb - Can you bring children and dogs to this place? If, no - It is a Bar

When I was in my 20s, the local pub would be busy every night (despite there being five others within a five minute walk), and at the weekend would be jam-packed with 18-35s. Nowadays, despite four of the other pubs closing, on the rare occasion I go in it's virtually empty, no atmosphere, no lads playing pool and darts, no groups of girls having a few before heading to a club. Mostly due to the cost I assume, the prices have tripled and wages most certainly have not, but I do wonder exactly what people in their 20s actually do on a friday night nowadays....

He says that, in a country pub, the locals will look at outsiders with a bit of 'scorn'. There might be an element of that, in some pubs more than others, however I would say that 1 of the big differences between British pubs and American bars is that when you're out in the middle of nowhere, in the UK, 1 of the 1st places you should look for is the local country pub and you will almost certainly find hospitality. In the US, when you're out in the middle of nowhere, I'd probably think twice about wondering into the 1st, isolated, little bar I find, lol

If you went back 100 years, the local pub was a warm welcoming place, When the working class city dweller lived in a " 2 up 2 down" terrace house. With a coal fire in one room and an outside toilet. The last time I looked up my local pub, it had turned into a restaurant with a bar attached. Where you are not allowed to sit down at a table if you are not ordering food.

I'm a wetherspoons mystery dinner. The chain of pubs is massive. They generally open from 7am till 11pm or later at weekends. They serve food most of the time from breakfasts to traditional dinner foods like sausage and mash. The meals are cooked from frozen. They do a meal and non alcoholic or alcoholic deal throughout the day. They have unlimited hot drinks from a machine (tea, coffees and hot chocolates) during the day for like $2. This attracts the retired and remote workers (as they have pretty fast free wifi) They have daily specials on food and drinks. At the weekend you often see the 20 somethings sharing a pitcher of some cocktail! Pubs nowadays embrace families and dogs! (Many pubs are dog friendly and have water bowls and maybe dog treats available!). Some pubs even have a pub dog that the landlord owns and can usually be found at this time of year sitting in front of the open fire that some traditional pubs still have! Btw. I met an American associate in London for the first time a few days ago and she confused the bar staff by leaving a couple of pound tip on the bar. Eventually they brought the coins over thinking she had left her money on the bar! I had to explain that tipping bar staff or indeed most staff in the UK is unusual.

There are plenty of people who never set foot in a pub. We are also part of British culture. Pub people ignore us and pretend we don't exist.

Could of been longer and put more into that but otherwise, its a pretty accurate video about British pubs so maybe good to keep it shorter and not get bord, usually these type of videos have incorrect information but guy that does these videos is pretty good at what he is doing.

WOO! 1st comment! You've got to react to Al Murray's sitcom 'Time Gentlemen Please' originally shown on Sky back in 2000 - all episodes are on his KZfaq page. The first series is the best.

I am afraid this post is not very accurate look at British pubs, generally they are not that noisy I am not saying that they cant be, but vastly different to what is portrayed in the video, they are more relaxed where you go to meet friends and catch up, the traditional pub has a nice atmosphere. Wetherspoons is somewhere to avoid, very clinical atmosphere usually for younger people to go and get a tank full of cheep beer before heading to the night clubs, so not the best example. More like your bars.

not sure about that. I went to the one in Guildford and paid £2.79 for a Budweiser. The San Miguel is still pretty low at £3.77 i believe. Then there's the IPA's for barely 2 quid!

My local Pub is the Bell in Walthamstow North East London, it’s been there for years in fact the Corner it’s on is known as Bell Corner. It’s busy during the day with locals such as parents with babies, social groups but turns more traditional in the evening.

Until 1982, it was legal for the proprietor of a British pub to refuse service to a woman - and not because she’d had enough alcohol already, but simply because of her sex. Back in the day some pubs were entirely ‘men-only’, but even those that were not exclusively male generally wouldn’t allow female customers to go in alone. Instead, they would sit in a dedicated snug - a separate room with frosted windows - to wait to be served or for drinks to be brought to them by their male companions.

After the smoking ban came in the UK causing customer numbers to dwindle, pubs diversified into the Gastro Pub ; mixing traditional pub grub and restaurant food creating more of a family environment.. hence having a Sunday Lunch or weekday meal.

Makes me sick looking at my local town and area now . There's only like a quarter of the pubs and bars left than when I was in my late teens and 20s . And my parents say back when they was young they was more than double the pubs they was than when I was going out 😢❤
