After arriving in Salalah in southern Oman, I set out on a unique adventure where I’d get to try some fresh camel milk, directly from the camels themselves!
These are domesticated camels owned by farmers. The camels venture across a road to a water hole close to the beach and then walk back across the road to their farm. There were dozens of them, including lots of babies!

My guide Khalid from Salalah Fast Tour and I drove down a dirt road to the home of one of the camel farmers. Once we arrived, we laid back and relaxed a bit and chatted with the farmers before going to see some of the babies in a pen.
We had to be careful around the babies, as the mothers can be agggressive. They have to tie her legs so she can’t kick them while they’re milking her. The milk comes out hot and frothy! They’re beautiful animals!
They have two female camels that he milks, and the entire milking process takes about 15 minutes. The milk was frothy and very unique. I usually stay away from milk, but this was amazing!
It was fresh and unpasteurized, and tasty. It was thinner than whole cow milk. It was a nice change!
Then, we enjoyed some tea over some nice conversation. As the sun started to set, we saw more of the camels. They were so cool! Then, we drove to Salalah to get some food.
As we drove, Khalid told me that most of the locals are from India, Pakistan, and Bangalesh. I dropped off my bags at the Muscat International Hotel and headed to the local fish market to get some dinner.
There were lots of mid-rise buildings with restaurants on the lower levels in the city center. Also nearby is the Sultan Qaboos Mosque, the city’s main mosque. It’s massive and has lots of beautiful minarets.
I arrived at the fish market and checked out a Bengali restaurant before heading outside to the fish vendors. They had lots of fresh fish, mussels, shrimp, octopus, and more. They bake everything!
The restaurant closes around 8 or 8:30 p.m., and I arrived at 7:45. I ordered a fish and a salad with arugula, tomatoes, and cucumber. The fish was covered in Bengali masalas!
I didn’t know what kind of fish I ordered, as there was a language barrier between myself and the cooks.
I loved the fresh greens and the tomatoes, as well as the spicy chutney. The fish was bony but very meaty. The masalas were very tasty. Dipping the fish into the chutney was the best!
Of course, because it was a fish market, there were also cats there. They always want some food! Finally, I poured the chutney over the fish to finish it up!
