Staying hydrated is critical in the field. Today let's collect and try Drinking Water from Coyote Wells, also known as Gypsy Wells, and do a Brown Bag Filter demo. This will give you another additional way of how to filter water for drinking. The Brown Bag is a nicely made version of the widely used Millbank Bag water filter. When collecting water from a coyote well system, the water will usually be turbid with silt and other sediment therein. The Brown Bag water filter from Browns Bushcraft does an amazing job of filtering water and removing these unwanted materials. The Brown Bag water filter is the perfect pre-filter to use when disinfecting water by boiling. It is also a great device for preserving the life of your Grayl Ultralight, or any other water filter device you choose to use because it filters out the course particulates that tend to clog up your water filter. This is one of the wild camping tips anyone who goes afield should know! You can find the BROWN BAG FILTER and other gear below at the Self Reliance Outfitters Link.

Three observations: that shovel looks amazing (gotta get one!), the canvas pre-filter bag does an amazing job of removing sediment, and I'm a huge fan of the Grayl Geopress. Been using the Geopress for a year now and it's great. Thanks for demonstrating the use of the Brown Bag Filter.

Where I live on the high desert plains, Texas panhandle water is a premium resource and harder to come across, a coyote well is the best bet for water but the well will have to be deeper even in a dried up river bed. Some cactus can be used but you have to know which cactus is good and which could make you sick or kill you. Great video Matt keep em coming.

for the last several years I've been carrying the bottom portion of a plastic cat litter jug (top portion cut off) to insert into the gypsy well with the top rim just below the surface of the water and allow it to fill up dipping out all of the particulates with my sierra cup once the water is clear I fill up my mill bank bag and drain it into my water bottle which will go on the fire once its full. after its boiled and cooled it goes into a canteen.

I really appreciate this knowledge, I grew up in the mountains of the southwest and I could usually count on clear and clean mountain springs 99% of the time, however moving to the midwest there's plenty of water but 99%of it is contaminated with farm waste and pollution in general, prefiltering is definitely the key to making your primary filter last, a hard lesson from basic class last year, I should have done a better job when collecting water for the final, and used a prefilter, my second bottle took way to long to boil...

Great presentation. I believe that you covered all the bases. You might consider a personal practice of mine over the top but when I'm dipping from the well I tie a bandana over the top of the cup. I've also been known to use water treatments instead of a Sawyer or some other filter.
@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 4 жыл бұрын
Definitely not a bad practice to have. At some point I will add another video in this series to address chemical treatments as well. In all honesty, it is something I have less experience with in recent times due to using filtering and boiling as primary means. I know people have different preferences based on location, environment, etc so it is good to cover all the bases. Thank you for watching and sharing your ideas! Take care.
@viewsandreviews180
@viewsandreviews180 4 жыл бұрын
Black Hat Bushcraft Thank you for your response. My first use of chemical treatments for water was in the military and to be honest with you it’s my fallback in most situations these days. I usually just use a Sawyer when I’m in the mountains (cleaner water) and rely on the coyote well and the system you taught in this presentation when I’m in the valleys or lowlands. In some conditions I’ve resorted to tapping trees or vines for fresh water. Trees and vines usually have an additional benefit of a pleasant flavoring (personal favorites are wild grapevines, muscadine vines, birch or maple trees) that I believe has an additional caloric value in addition to the water which needs no further processing. In both trees and vines it’s important to tap them in a way that allows the outer covering to be put back or the tree or vine will suffer. Another thing to be mindful of is not to get into the poisonous stuff. As an aside I’ve enjoyed all your content that I’ve watched. You’re an excellent instructor. You present every topic in a logical and comprehensive manner. I’m always excited to see what you have to say.

The Grayl is a great concept, and I do keep one in the car for emergencies, but I think it has a big design flaw. A big part of the filtering process involves putting your (dirty after digging a hole) hands on the rim of the bottle to press down, thus contaminating the container with the same critters you are so careful to filter out. If there is a work-around for this, other than using hand sanitizer, I haven’t heard of it yet..
@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 3 жыл бұрын
The part you touch to press down isn't actually the part that you drink from. On the Geopress you press on the lid but do not touch the mouthpiece. On the Ultralight, you can keep the lid unscrewed but in place so that you never touch the rim. Do you have the Geopress or Ultralight version?
@4StonesHandcraft
@4StonesHandcraft 3 жыл бұрын
@@blackhatbushcraft I have the ultralight. I tried leaving the lid on unscrewed but it still seems to almost seal when pressed down. I will have to refine my technique, haha.

I have had the same idea with some burlap wine bags my wife bought years ago that were left over from a project she did, you think those will work? The weave is more of the old flour sacks pretty tight but not like the canvas water bags you sometimes saw if you were in the service in the 70s to 90s.

@blackhatbushcraft
@blackhatbushcraft 4 жыл бұрын
Hi James, you can make a bag filter like this for sure. I made one myself that I used in a recent video showing the Grayl Geopress. I used a heavy cotton canvas and it worked well. You could even make one out of an old pair of denim jeans. The leg would be a good piece to start with. If you don't have any old ones to sacrifice, stop into a local thrift store and you can probably get a pair for a couple of dollars. That can give you a couple of filters and some extra material to make char cloth with too :) Just stick with material that is 100% cotton for best results. Good luck! I would love to hear how it turns out! Take care.

For me, I turn the bag inside out and wash it well when I am at home. If I get it very dirty, I will do the same in the field and rinse it out in the local water source as best as possible. You can actually run it through your washing machine at home, just leave out the detergents.
