Excellent video as usual. I made the soaker hose mistake once. The first 10 feet flooded, the next 20 feet provided moderately consistent watering and the last 20 feet did nothing but sweat. Never again. It was completely useless. Don’t fall for the soaker hose trap, folks!

The Millennial Gardener lol I had the same problem! I bought a 50 soaker it actually flooded the first 5 feet but down at the end was sweaty... I did buy a shorter 20 foot and it seems to do better

Absolutely agree that soaker hoses should be avoided. Variable pressure and flow rates across the hose with no consistency. I learned this the hard way. I had to change all of my soaker hoses to drip tapes. Highly recommended.

What about coiling around a tree? Does it have to lay flat?Do you put mulch over top as advised for soaker hose. How many seasons does it last? Please answer all my question.
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 жыл бұрын
You can't coil around a tree because it will kink. It lays flat when the water is not running and inflates when the water is running. We just run it alongside our fig trees and it works fine. You can cover it with mulch or soil -- it works much better when buried and out of the way. The 8 mil tape will usually last 3-4 seasons, while the 15 mil tape is good for at least 5 years.

Never even hear of drip tape before. Was going to go with soaker hoses. That said I have NO water pressure as mine is all gravity fed from a water tank as I am off grid. Any thoughts on this folks? Many thanks!

Is one row of drip tape sufficient for say tomatoes, eggplant or peppers or do you need a row of drip tape on each side of the plant?

I have well water, on a very low pressure system. Can the drip tape be directly attached to a garden hose? That black supply pipe and its connectors don't hold up well in this extreme desert. Is the tape made of the same material as the supply pipe?
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 5 жыл бұрын
The mainline ("supply pipe") is much thicker than the actual drip tape. The mainline is always "inflated", whereas the drip tape lays flat unless water is running through it. You need the mainline to feed the drip tape because it helps reduce the pressure so that the tape lines don't blow.

@@gardeningwithhoss how long does drip tape last? Is it better than using regular half-inch drip tubing with button emitters as needed, or 1/2" drip tubing with inline emitters (spaced @ 9, 12, 18", depending on the tubing)?

how does drip tape work in a freezing temprature. does it crack or burst in freezing temprature as compared to hose. what can be done to prevent it
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 4 жыл бұрын
It drains almost completely when you turn off the water -- so there's nothing inside the tape to freeze.

Good day from Puerto Lopez, Ecuador. It is a desert here, with 250mm precipitation per year.I have 20 hectares to plant with something, maybe Cocao. My question is, how big should the Header Feed pipe be to Drip Tape when the tape uses 47gpm total. The Head Feed Pump can produce about the same, but cant have over 10 psi. to the Tape. I read an Engineer say the Header Feed should be twice the diameter of the Drip Tape. I know I need to regulate pressure to 15 psi. at the Head. How big a pipe do I need to feed the Drip Tape? Or, was this Engineer thinking there was no pressure regulator installed?
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 5 жыл бұрын
We use the 5/8" header line (some call it 1/2"). It can only be used for rows less than 100 ft. If you're doing 20 hectares, you'll probably need a much larger header line, like the lay flat hose that looks like fire hose.
@Indanao1
@Indanao1 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. We will do a hectare at a time...400ft rows. If we use 2" blue flat tube, is it too big to work?

Which mil do you recommend for a 100 ft x 10' raised bed garden? Also, how can I use rain barrel water with this? I must need some kind of pressure gauge?
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 4 жыл бұрын
We like the 8 mil for all vegetable crops and the 15 mil for perennials. You can only use a rain barrel if you get it way off the ground to generate enough pressure. Our kits include the filter and pressure regulator you need to reduce the pressure down to 12 psi.

It depends on your flow rate. Time how long it takes you to fill a 5 gallon bucket and divide that by 5. That will give you the flow rate in gallons per minute. With our system, you can water up to 1,250 feet at one time if your flow rate is 5 gallons per minute.
