Drip system vs. overhead watering - which is best, and why? Dad explains his garden watering setup and best practices. There's a lot of information in this video I think you might find helpful! Drip system tips. Overhead watering tips.
Here's an Amazon link to the drip tape we'd recommend;
P1 Drip Tape 15 mil. 8" emitter spacing USA made - amzn.to/44fZzHD
Great soil health tips from Dan! Make the your soil the best dirt it can be by focusing on feeding the soil microbial biology, instead of feeding your plants. The reason this works best is because the soil microbes themselves are what actually feeds your plant's root system through mycorrhizal symbiosis!

This is great. We have fought for years with either squirrels or rats chewing on our drip irrigation tubing. I think they are trying to get water. My husband is so sick of it and doesn’t want to fool with fixing it all the time. Which means I have to water by hand every day practically all summer, for years now. I’ve got quite a bit. So I’ll try to get him to watch this when he gets home….on the sly🤣 and maybe we can learn something new to fix the problem? Thanks!!!

Thanks for watching! This system is very simple and very inexpensive, sometimes I dump ash from the woodstove on the beds in the wintertime and end up melting a hole in a drip tape but it's so easy to repair or replace,I usually just replace the line as it's so cheap,it costs around 150.00 for the 4000 ft. roll. Hope it works out for you! If you need further help you can email at biscuitridge2004@yahoo.com

I really love your videos, thank you both for teaming up together and mixing technology like youtube with good old fashion knowledge and experience. This is exactly what young homesteads like ours needed. Just to have an opportunity to learn from some of the wisest when we didn't have someone in our lives like that to learn from is amazing. Again thank you guys!!

I will try the drip tape, first timer with that. I'm all for distributing water equally and having more control. I've tried many ways, many saying these are best but studies and great growers like Dan tell Truth and I'm convinced. I really like the way Dan is practical, brings things to a more nuts and bolts level. He also explains what's really needed. I like how Wes narrates and brings any questions that he may think growers have. Fantastic ! Don

I would say maybe one on what kind of a crops might be better than others and what varietys you pick and why, wether it be the best for nutrients, flavor, or just the shear volume u get by growing that variety and what your seed lineup looks like.

thank you. I have a question. Do you use the valves as a flow regulator and only open it half way for some sections, so that it still provides some water (maybe to adjust water to rows of plants that may prefer less). Or do you just use them as all on or all off, and just completely shut water off to that section of tape.
@GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork
@GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork Ай бұрын
Good question! I use the valves as all on or all off,I doubt that it would water evenly if used as a flow restrictor. Have a blessed day!

How would this transfer to setting up in raised beds? I have never used irrigation before but as I add more beds watering by hand is wearing me out😂. Also I’m wondering about how to store it during the winter- I live in northern Alberta where we can get -50 on occasional winters. Does the pressure come out the same on the tapes furthest away from the main tap?

Have you seen setting up grid systems for raised beds, there are a few videos on making your own using poly pipe and also one you can purchase (very expensive).

You also said that you would have like to get the 15mil 6inch emitters, do you think that you may have to switch the drip tape out or will 8 inch work for the most part? Also I found the 6 inch 15mil drip tape at OneStop but they only sell them in 500 foot not 1,000

@GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork

I'd definitely go with drip because it being much easier and less expensive and much more flexible in many ways. With drip hooked up to a timer your watering is pretty care free! Have a blessed day!

What is your water source? I have well water, but it runs through a softener system. I’m always worried about the salt content.
@GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork
@GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork 4 ай бұрын
Are you sure that your irrigation water is actually routed through the water softener? Most systems don't, if they're designed correctly.

We're using well water,if you are using city water you'll need the let it sit out in the sun for a day or so to gas off the chlorine.

@GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork
@GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork 26 күн бұрын
The filter is 3/4" and so is the pressure regulator,the regulator is a high flow unit so I can water my whole garden at once. Regulator is a Nelson brand and I'm not sure about the filter, I'll see if I can find out. Blessings to you!
