this ending is so, so bittersweet for me. they both wind up (mostly) safe in the end, but both irene and the driver are left heartbroken and alone. the driver drives off into the night, alone, and knowing that he finally did something that was right, and irene goes back into her apartment, alone, knowing that she just lost what was potentially the love of her life. they both go back into their own darkness, irene before she met driver, and driver before he met irene. driver’s life is emptier without irene and benicio, and irene’s life is emptier without driver. the things that always get me about this scene, though, are the tears welling up in driver’s eyes despite his stoicism, and irene’s hesitant final knock before she walks back into her apartment. they’ve both accepted the inevitable, their fates without each other. but it still hurts.

This songs first popped up when the main character had reached its happiest climax. I believe it's meant to give the audience a hint of a second character climax. He "died".. he's in pain, he has to leave for good, but he knows shes gonna be fine.

That's one way to look at it. I always believed that "Driver" was just going thru the motions of life surviving _as a zombie_ ("you look like a zombie, kid, you getting any sleep?") and that doing good things for Irene and Ben made him feel like alive _and a real hero - real human being!_

Earlier in the film, Bryan Cranston's character says "the kid just showed up out of nowhere" I like to think something similar made him have to pick up and leave and arrive at this point, so its like he has to go through it again

These endings are so painful but so true and right. Life isn't about happy endings. Sometimes you never contact the girl again even when you want to. You break it off and disappear. It's the right thing to do even if it hurts, just like this ending.

It took me awhile to realize the beauty of this ending scene, as I thought it was stupid how The Driver left Irene despite going through all that bullshit. However, I now realize he did that not in spite of her, but to protect her.

I often heard or read of people wishing to be a hero of some kind, but felt they lacked the grit or mettle to be one, to be too flawed either physically or mentally to make a difference But the truth is... Being a hero doesn't mean wielding a sword and slaying a dragon, or having a cape and being able to fly. Being a hero means, time and time again, to do what it is right, put yourself on the line, for the sake of others, especially when you have nothing to gain and everything to lose We often focus on aspect of heroes like their powers (hercules' super strength and superman laser eye sight) to the point we forget they are human (or human-like). They look like us, act like us and are flawed like us (hercules' arrogance, superman's unflexibility on his moral code), and that in fact they CAN be us As George Lucas said " _Heroes come in all sizes, and you don't have to be a giant hero. You can be a very small hero. It's just as important to understand that accepting self-responsibility for the things you do, having good manners, caring about other people-these are heroic acts. Everybody has the choice of being a hero or not being a hero every day of their lives._ " And then here, the Driver himself, in spite of his criminal background and violent ways, managed to save the life of a woman and a kid, at cost of being (potentially mortally) wounded That is why I will love this movie forever: because it shows what truly makes people heroes. It's not superpowers or fancy gadgets or skills: it's our humanity. Loving others unconditionally and striving to do the right thing because we choose to is what truly makes us heroes: by being real human beings

Yes, but a REAL hero?: Electric Youth frontman Austin Garrick, along with David Grellier, who performs as College, have cited separate inspirations for producing the song, Real Hero. Garrick was inspired to write the song by a quote from his grandfather, who spoke of airline captain Chesley Sullenberger after the US Airways Flight 1549 water landing incident.[3][4] Garrick's grandfather referred to Sullenberger as "a real human being and a real hero", which became the song's refrain. The second verse of the song, which includes the line "155 people on board", refers to the 155 survivors of US 1549. Grellier, on the other hand, took inspiration from cinema, in particular the character Max Rockatansky of the Mad Max franchise. Grellier has stated that he "wanted to give a homage to that lonely hero that we see in movies like Mad Max. People who make their own choice and try to save lives. I want to give an homage."[4] The first verse of the song is more along these lines and could be taken to be about Mad Max himself, although it could also be about Sullenberger.

He tried being a good guy after meeting Irene, he wanted to sort things out and get out of the business, but just like the story of the Scorpion and the Frog, the former always sting because it's his nature, but at least he is good enough to know about his true nature. If they are for each other, they'll meet again somewhere, sometime again, I think when that comes around the driver already sorted things out especially after Irene, he got a motivation to move forward to a new and hopefully a better life.

I see it as he died and we see his ghost driving off. Ghosts that died with blood all over themselves can still be visibly showing all that blood and the wounds that killed them. He seriously doesn't blink for an entire minute and then suddenly he's okay. He symbolically dies and drives off, never to return because he's just going to drive around L.A. for all eternity now.

"The Driver" ...aka the driver with no name. Homage to The Man With No Name (Clint Eastwood) -- westerns (3 films) by Sergio Leone. Both characters are 'anti-heroes'. Heroes, yes, but not sanitized ones, without any human shortcomings themselves, violent at times ....... more 'real' (human) than the perfect, faultless heroes.

Love this film and Ryan he's a phenomenal actor. The only part I didn't like was leaving the money behind. He could have used ot somehow or gave it to someone in need. Other than that I loved this film

I assumed he died, like he didn’t actually physically drive off that was just like his spirit, so the money was left there literally because he couldn’t have moved it while dead and metaphorically because it was a part of his life, which is now over because he’s resolved all the plot threads involving it and then left all the problems that money created behind by dying, and ultimately that money was the most impactful thing he left behind besides his neighbor
