Inside Audi Tradition, where all of Audi's race cars and rally cars go to retire. The secret storage facility located in south eastern Germany is not open to the public, a rare view inside at the collection - including the Silver Arrows.

I like the fact that JF loves Audi so he does these videos with passion and he has his own interest. That's why the videos are so interesting, even if I never used to have huge interest for this brand but /DRIVE does a good job of showing that history to us! Thanks.

JF - I need you to do the same investigation / tour into Honda's history. How they came to be, their collection of racing automobiles, and smack them to wake the heck up and go back to their mid to late 80's mentality.

I've never appreciated nor understood the audi cars and neither the company itself, and still don't, but that's just my opinion. But the quattro itself, it brings every man (including me) to his knees, because that is and will always be the roots of our every racing car. The technology these monsters posses is just outstanding. Oh, and I don't mean to offend anyone with my first statement.

I have never owned a car that pleased, excited and makes me want to go for a drive every day! I have a 2011 A4 Premium. I am 80 years of age. the only thing that I possible could want more would be a S4 Prestige (or equivalent). I will probably never own another vehicle - I am pleased, happy and satisfied. Audi Quattro - what an exciting car.

James May BMW? Better check the record books. Audi currently has the most wins for a race car, previously it was Porsche. Where were the Group B BMW's? Or how about DTM? Remember the Audi V8 dominated the series while the BMW M3 and Mercedes AMG chased.

LSG Drizzt But it's usually used to describe a racing Mercedes both new and old, hence their logo. Even according to your source above, the term was first used to describe a Mercedes: "In 1958 Alfred Neubauer's biography was published, and he described the origin of the Silver Arrows as being accidental. In 1934 the international governing body of motor sport prescribed a maximum weight limit of 750 kg for Grand Prix racing cars, excluding tyres and fuel. Neubauer said that when in spring 1934, the Mercedes-Benz team placed its new Mercedes-Benz W25 on the scrutineering scales prior to the Eifelrennen at the Nürburgring, it allegedly recorded 751 kg (1,656 lb). Racing manager Alfred Neubauer and his driver Manfred von Brauchitsch, who both later published their memoirs, claimed that they had the idea of removing all the white paint from the bodywork. The story continues that the next day the shining silver aluminium beneath was exposed and scrutineering was passed. After the 350 hp (260 kW) car of Von Brauchitsch won the race, the nickname Silver Arrow was born, according to this version.". Audi were the ones who later followed suit and removed their paint to save weight. Just google search it again and see how many results will appear as Mercedes related.
@banddude121
@banddude121 10 жыл бұрын
***** Just because it started at Mercedes doesn't mean it is limited to just Mercedes. Every German car is a silver arrow. Silver=Germany, Green= England, Red= Italy.
@CJM44.41
@CJM44.41 10 жыл бұрын
LSG Drizzt Yeah I understand that much and it does make sense, but for the most part silver arrow is perhaps simply just a slang for referring to Mercedes in general (most significantly today in F1). Just look how many show up as Mercedes related. Hard argument, we're really just splitting hairs here. I get where you're coming from. Just trying to help clarify.
@Mikab61
@Mikab61 10 жыл бұрын
Where do you guys get your info from? A beer hall? The Mercedes in 1934 were never painted white and never had to be stripped. It was a lie. Both Audi and Mercedes were polished Aluminum as early as the 1934 Avus race which was before the Nürburgring race. These cars were never white because both teams knew their cars were overweight so they built them in polished aluminum to meet the 750kg limit. Mercedes referred to their cars in a press release as the Silver Arrows and this was applied to both cars by the newspapers. So from then on both Audi and Mercedes were the Silver Arrows. Germany previously used white for their national racing color. See the Mercedes SSK race cars. Read Dog Nye's article on how Neubauer's biography was wrong.

The Type D is the real story, here. Modern Audi's started with the NSU-Ro80 rotary Wankel.. The failure of which let DKW buy the tooling for the car. Just as their two strokers were banned world wide... along with SAABs.. From out of the ashes! Combing WITH Porsche was a stroke of genius.. Just as the 917s were dominating LeMans.. 924s and 928s REALLY were Audi's ditto 944's.. 959s.. Badge Engineering from the board room.. Piesch & Co.... Family ties.. So it goes..
