The 2022 Ford Maverick comes standard with a hybrid powertrain but many buyers will crave more power. That’s easily solved by going with the 2-liter EcoBoost powertrain, a turbocharged 4-cylinger pumping out 250 horsepower. If you want all-wheel drive and the ability to tow up to 2 tons, it’s the engine you need. Tom Voelk takes a closer look at the gas-only Maverick and takes an FX4 package off road.

I expect to see these trucks everywhere in the next couple of years. If you own a compact or midsize car, why not trade up to one of these? 2018 focus base model was 17,950, couple more grand and you get MORE efficiency, a bed, and more room? This is going to be a no-brainer upgrade for a ton of people. I've even read in the comment sections of other videos, people who have F150's and full size trucks asking themselves why they need a fullsize, and how sweet this little truck is with AWD and a Turbo-4. The 0-60 in these is dang close to the V8's, and 75% of people don't tow anything at all.......

The XLT FX4 is exactly how I would get the Maverick, only other options I’d get would be the 4K Tow & Co-Pilot 360 packages, the 400 watt inverter would also be a really nice option to have. For what I’d need in a truck to tow single axle trailers, hauling kayaks, loading stuff in the bed when I’d need too, getting to camp spots & light offroading on BLM Areas, Forest Service Roads, etc. this would be perfect.

The ecoboost/awd package is 3305 together. You dont pay the $1085 for the engine, then another $3305 for the awd. Your total price sounds right, but it's not $4400 for the eco and awd, it's just $3305. I know this because I spec'ed mine that way when I ordered it.

HI TOM, GOOD REVIEW!! I like this little "trucklet" and I do understand that it was built to be the lowest priced, entry level vehicle that FORD will sell in America, so I guess we can't expect it to have every option available, but you REALLY have to give FORD credit for making the hybrid engine standard equipment, which may make it the lowest priced hybrid sold here?? But, YOUR ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!! AND THANK YOU FOR POINTING IT OUT!! Why in the HELL does FORD keep saying " under $20 thousand bucks, when that's without destination charges?? Can you, or me, or any average American buy one without destination charges?? It's not like it isn't a still reasonable price with destination added, it is!! But, $1500 dollars to ship this little truck?? Even from Mexico?? Maybe if FORD didn't ship cars like the Transit Connect from Turkey or Spain, or the Ecosport from India, and then defray those costs into every vehicle they sell us here, we all wouldn't have to pay so DAMN much destination charges on every car made here!!! THANKS TOM!! CHAS ORVIS, PLAINVILLE, CT.

I've noticed how quickly Ford has shifted their marketing from the hybrid model that they can't build enough of to the 2.0T. More proof that the hybrid was always meant to be more of a marketing ploy to build hype than their main volume seller. And I think they got that backwards. Read all the comments on everything Maverick related ... the vast majority are wanting the hybrid's city mileage, not the turbo AWD version. But that's what a lot will end up buying because it's going to be the only version they'll be able to find anywhere. Ford ticked a lot of checkboxes with the Maverick, but had quite a few misses too. NOT anticipating demand for the hybrid vs. the turbo was one of them.

Beware, before purchasing one be sure you check to see they have upgraded the exhaust manifold and turbo assembly. It is prone to cracking and they come as a unit and is pricey to fix off warranty ie. $5000.00. This issue has plagued the 2.0 lt ecoboost engines that use thin gauge stainless exhaust manifolds rather than cast manifolds. Many 3rd party companies offer cast manifolds with turbo assemblies for cheaper than oem.

Ford has a winner here. I don't want the Ranger. Truck is old before it was new. Toyota needs to update the drivetrains in my favorite the Tacoma. The GM twins are out. Santa Cruz is like the Jetsons get a Maverick 20 years later. It looks so modern, but Maverick is like that well rounded kid you knew in school. Was never great anything but still really cool and smart where he needed to be and never trendy where he didn't. The Maverick succeeds in a no Jedi Mind tricks honest and great sized truck for anyone. Hybrid is just fine if you are a Home Depot stay close to home sort. I would recommend this to my parents for gardening and other chores. The Hybrid would rock their world getting mileage as good as their Honda car. Nice. I am debating FX4 myself. Also living in TN. Does it make sense? My drives are mixture of highway and city. Seldom long distances even less so off road. But having the option of AWD is nice. But the right tires for the conditions will outweigh that costly option too. A tricky decision to make here. I hate to say it but the Turbo 4 and AWD looks like the long term winner for me and my lifestyle. I like options.

I heard all of these for this calendar year are already sold out. I like it when American car companies succeed and provide products that so many buyers need and want. It's good news. For a wagon-lover like me, however, there just are no choices anymore unless I want to spend 60k or settle for an Outback or a used Alltrack. Europeans enjoy so many more types of body styles including a huge selection of hatchbacks and 'estates'. We just keep making trucks, SUVs and CUVs. Anywho, I do like the new Maverick. Nice job Ford.

So glad I bought a hybrid over these crappy eco boost versions. I’ve had my hybrid for 3 weeks now, gone on some road trips and work everyday. Still haven’t refueled my gas tank yet. I test drove two fully loaded eco boost models and they surprisingly felt slower than my maverick. Almost bought the eco before I learned it requires premium 91 octane gasoline. The maverick is not a camper towing truck either way you look at it. Even at 4000 pounds your limited. And besides.. if you have the money to buy a camper trailer nowadays.. you probably have enough for a truck that can actually tow it properly. With the 1500lbs on my hybrid that’s plenty enough for my dirt bikes on a small trailer and to help move my house furniture.. and that’s all I need. I only need to change oil every 7500-10000 miles whereas the ecoboost leaks gas into the oil requiring sub 4000 mile oil changes. Put a tonneau cover on my hybrid and now I’m getting close to 50mpg having the best time of my life turning heads.
@langhamp8912

The user manual recommends 87 octane fuel unless you're towing 4K, but even then it's a recommendation. I did go with the AWD after going back and forth with the hybrid; I think for most people the AWD is best for most of the time. Now I did test drive a hybrid versus an AWD truck before placing my order, and really enjoyed the turbo and the nice handling of the AWD. For two vehicles that look exactly the same, they handle so differently as to be two entirely different classes. The hybrid is an honest truck whereas the AWD is a tall Subaru WRX. I feel the AWD can be hustled around a racetrack pretty quickly without much drama. As for mileage, the AWD is extraordinarily fuel efficient; 32 mixed and 38 highway. The key is not to be in turbo mode, and once turbo is active then you must lift the throttle completely to get it to shut down. However, once you drive entirely without turbo, the AWD gets crazy good gas mileage. Not 50 mpg, of course, but not too bad. The actual decision to go with AWD was simply an IIHS government study that looked at fatality rates between AWD and FWD versions of the same model; the death rate for FWD cars is nearly three times greater than AWD. From IIHS/Torque news. "The data show that almost across the board, the trims that power all four wheels have much lower drive death rates. Let's start with the single most popular non-truck sold in America, the Toyota RAV4. This is the vehicle with the largest data set. The RAV4 AWD has a driver death rate of 10. The 2WD version of that exact same vehicle has a driver death rate of 28. Nearly triple the likelihood (however small) of being killed while driving the vehicle. Make this comparison with the Nissan Rogue or Honda CR-V, the two next-best selling vehicles in that huge segment, and the results are the same. The AWD trims have a markedly lower driver death rate."

@@langhamp8912 the hybrid and 2.0 feel almost identical in terms of handling. One thing I will mention is for some reason the hybrids have this issue where it automatically has “trailer sway” feature enabled in the settings from factory making it feel like a boat when driving. The 2.0 versions come with trailer sway setting disabled from the factory for some odd reason. So if you did notice a dramatic difference in the way they drove, it was likely due to the weird settings ford puts on them. Also the awd doesn’t get 38mpg lol. It can get about 30-32 tops. It’s rated at 28. Not to mention the ecoboost motor requires very frequent oil changes due to the turbo and having problems with leaking gas into the oil. I would recommend every 3,000 miles. The hybrid requires changes every 7500-10000 miles. Also fords user manual quite literally states 91 octane is required for the ecoboost motor, 93 recommended. Can it drive on 87? Yeah probably, but your motor isn’t going to last long if you do
@langhamp8912
@langhamp8912 11 ай бұрын
@@Flockingtheherd I find the hybrid and the AWD to be dramatically different in handling through turns, and especially off throttle and trail braking. The hybrid does indeed exhibit sway and bump oversteer under both brakes and throttle. The AWD is "honest" in that it predictably and very slightly understeers under all conditions. This is on smooth roads, mind you. On bumpy roads the difference is to be so stark as to be two different classes of vehicles. Like I said, the AWD is a poor man's enthusiasts car, while the hybrid is a competent truck doing truck things. I've done a LOT of trackdays in my life, so I'm not a typical pickup truck driver; I would take my AWD to a trackday but I'd never trust the hybrid to do so. Page 175 of the 2023 Maverick owner's manual states 87 octane under most usage, but 91 or high octane when towing or when performance is needed. What does your manual on page 175 say? I get 32 mixed and 38 highway but I'm extraordinarily skilled in getting great gas mileage from all my vehicles. Again, with this vehicle, it's trivial to get well above 32 mpg in mixed usage by staying off the turbo but staying out of turbo can be difficult because it's counterintuitive.

No it doesn't. Batteries are expensive and the hybrid drivetrain is smart for where we are currently with battery tech and current electrical grid capacity. We had blackouts in many areas of the us last year to due people staying hole and running their a/c constantly. Imagine what would happen with mass adoption of electric cars plugging in.

For the price I think it’s a good fit for the right buyer, but do not expect anything luxurious from this vehicle. It’s mostly hollow aluminum and cheap plastic, but the markets needs a cheaper smaller suv/truck that’s not pushing 40k. I would be more concerned about Ford‘s ability to service these these when things break, and they will because of the build quality. Fords track record has not been that great with the Mach E/Bronco. I owned a 2021 ranger and it was one of the worst built vehicles I’ve ever owned and Ford‘s warranty service was absolutely terrible even taking it to several different dealerships for service.

So close Ford, so close. The dealbreakers: 1) Bed is too short. Beds need to be 5' minimum, 6' is ideal (for compact pickups). FYI, the Tacoma offers it's crew cap with a 6' bed. 2) No manual option. Because people who drive trucks also like to feel engaged, just like sports car drivers. FYI, the Tacoma offers a manual. So does the FORD Bronco. So does the FORD Mustang. So it's not like FORD doesn't know Ford drivers do like a manual option. Really can't believe Ford is letting Toyota be the only manual in the small pickup game. - This breaks my heart. Otherwise, this is an ideal replacement for my 2011 Ford Ranger. My Ranger is essentially perfect, but it's very long in the tooth. I was so hoping the Mav. could be that replacement. (And yes, my Ranger has a 6' bed AND a manual...)

Great time to bring back the crossover truck but ford failed on this in some big ways. That interior is awful! And they have been doing so well I love my new f150 but that egg shell crap and the seats and all the colors in general are terrible who are they trying to attract? I was thinking about this for my wife but after this hell no. They need to shapen up the exterior like the f150s and blacken up the interior a lot! And give selectable transmission for Christ sakes, even a Subaru or Toyota gives you that on base models
