Upon rewatch, I was surprised at how little romance is actually shown between driver and Irene. Like In my mind I remembered driver being a total homewrecker. But he doesn't actually make any advances on Irene (except the elevator scene) moreover I forgot how much he cares for not only Irene but also her son, and maybe to some extent standard, though that ones up to interpretation (though there's a closeup of drivers face during the car chase after standard dies and I swear that his eyes are all glassy from holding back tears)
@KoOkiEzRoCkz
@KoOkiEzRoCkz 2 жыл бұрын
@@monkeydad47 Yeah I agree. To Driver, helping Standard helps ensure Irene and the boy are safe. But its also implied that Standard genuinely wants to turn a new leaf for his family. It makes it all the more tragic, when a 'simple' job ends with him dead.

That is an interesting take. I also wonder if the smiles are a common admiration, and realization of their fates. I also feel like there is some sorrow in Bernies expression at 0:43 when the driver sits down and is noticeably weary from the struggles he's faced,. This fits with the theme of them both being 'scorpions' who are doomed to fight to the death. They seems to both realize it.

Both were mistaken if they believed they had the upper hand. I like the ending but the only reason Driver is alive is where Bernie put his blade and I don't know that I buy that for such a blade obsessed character he wouldn't have got him where it would kill or just took him from behind while he opened the trunk or was handling the money. Straight to the kidney and he wouldn't survive or to the liver either one.

What a perfect ending to a brilliantly written arc. Driver’s psychotic nature makes him truly believe that he is a real hero, only to contrast with his brutality. But how he does everything for Irene, and how he chooses to leave the money behind knowing she’s safe truly makes him a real human being and a real hero.
@miked1869
@miked1869 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I like that. He's a deceptively complex character - not actually heroic for altruistic reasons, but fulfilling a fantasy. I think we're supposed to understand that he sees his life as though it's a movie and he's the star of it. He casts himself as the stereotypical strong, silent hero. "A real human being, and a real hero" is the soundtrack that plays in his head. He's not quite living in the real world.

I just love this scene. It fits with the whole "Frog and Scorpion" tale in the movie. The frogs are good guys and the scorpions are the bad ones. It's just that way "because of their nature". These are both bad dudes, who have problems of their own and all they want to do is just leave their bad lives behind for better ones. But they're scorpions, they can't, it's just really not who they are. That's why they both stab each other, it's just what their nature was telling them to do and they followed through. The Driver saw this, and realized he was gonna get stabbed by Bernie, exactly why he let him and why he just stabbed him right back. Not only that this is what the Driver(Ryan Gossling) wanted all along: The girl is safe, you're out of this bullshit, and most of all you got proper vengeance on those who wronged you and the one's you loved. The scorpion who was still the hero at least when it counted.

The frog/scorpion thing was a total last minute addition. The scorpion on the jacket was just too look cool. When filming the phone scene between Driver and Bernie, Gosling suddenly mentioned the idea of putting it in the scene and they did. Refn didn't plot it as symbolism throughout (in fact his two latest films have suffered because of really blatant and loaded symbolism).

BERNIE: *extends hand* DRIVER: "My hands are a little dirty." BERNIE: "So are mine." There's no frog in this clip. Driver fantasizes about becoming a frog. Tries to become a frog. And then he realizes that he can't become a frog. Because it's not a choice. He's not a frog. He is a scorpion. And Bernie is a scorpion. They are what they are. That's why they do what they do. That's why we see the two shadows struggling against each other in the final fight. These are both bad guys. But at the end, one of them is changed. Upgraded to an anti-hero.

Finally found this scene! It is best scene in the whole movie IMO. It really represents the sacrifice Driver is ready to do for his feelings against Irene. Leaving them behind for their own safety and giving them a chance. This really shows what he felt on them. Beautiful scene overall and the soundtrack is also great. I've always loved this scene particularly. I know we all can identify ourselves in this situation once in a life, giving up someone for their own good, for their better future and for their joy. So it really is not just for the character, but for all of us.

Love Driver's little smile there (@ around 2:22)-- he knows what's about to happen, Bernie. Also, that sound the knife makes as he yanks it out of himself.... *shudders*. Anyway, just an all around great scene. I love the music (other composers would have some kind of tense, action-y bullshit, but this is actually the same song playing when Driver and Irene kissed and I think the best soundtracks do things you don't expect) and that's some great editing and acting, too. I love the focus on Driver's shadow too for reasons I can't really articulate. Great movie in general and one of my favorites for sure. One problem though--it bothers me that there's no "blood" on his skin when he's lying back against the car.... weird detail to miss and kinda messes with the suspension of disbelief for me.

I believe Drive evokes strong emotion because people instinctively sense that it represents the last breaths of a way of life that can no longer exist. Throughout all of history, you could ride off into the sunset like Shane on his horse, or the Driver, in his car, and escape the life you had. In the age of internet connected smartphones filming and tracking every one at all times, there is nowhere to run to where your past won't follow you. Being able to disappear into the cityscape like the Driver is a liberty that is gone forever. I think this is what causes a sense of nostalgia to come over me when I watch, or reflect on, the film.

Man what a movie Drive was and it's one of my top 5 favorites of all time. Of course the ending was very sad when Driver couldn't stay in L.A. anymore after the ''paying debt'' screw up he had to deal with because of Bernie and other bad guys who planned the assassination on him and the close to him like Irene. Still everything in it was great especially the song A Real Hero and the acting of Ryan Gosling even Carey Mulligan, Bryan Canston, Ron Pearlman and Albert Brooks (as really scary he was as Bernie.)

The only thing I disagree with in this scene is, how ON EARTH do you turn your back to a certified killer like that guy. He would’ve never left my sight. And he most DEFINITELY would not have been walking behind me. But, this is one of my absolute favorite movies. Leave Fast & Furious for the mouth breathers.

I'd like to take a moment to point out the car the Driver uses in this movie. This movie was clearly set in contemporary Los Angeles (noting all the ordinary city cars you'd see present day) whilst Ryan Gosling drives a classic Chevy. His character in of itself is strange and socially awkward and he doesn't seem to fit in very well with everyone else. His car also doesn't fit in with other cars, and unlike some classic cars like a Chevelle or a Mustang which are praised for being different, his car is a Malibu. Malibus as far as I know were pretty overlooked when this movie debuted and I believe still aren't sought after like some other vehicles. I thought his choice of vehicle in this movie was a nice touch.

Driver's primary interest wasn't romantic, so people disappointed that he doesn't "get the girl," are looking at it wrong. Driver is a real-life criminal who also plays criminals onscreen as a stunt driver. His primary wish is to be a hero, not just onscreen but in real life. To be somebody who helps innocent people, and not just people who hurt and steal and kill. The triumph, at the end, is that even though he is unsuccesful in saving Standard, he is able to get Irene and her child out from under his mistakes. He is able to protect them from the things he has done by running away. If he survives, he will probably need to seek a new identity. Even if he dies soon, though, it will be knowing that he did something good. Driver isn't a romantic meet-cute. It's a story of redemtpion.

Unusual (and refreshing) that the final boss that the two Gentile lovers must overcome is a Jewish usurer. The writer Amini is a Persian no less! At least one Jewish producer so I guess it's a Kosher film. The ethnic semiotics is fascinating. There's always a subtext to be read for those who have eyes to see it but I'm still surprised to see this one got past the gatekeeper. Great film.

Fun fact: In this scene, we can see the driver is not dead because of him blinking his eyes at the last moment. He is alive, but just like the tales of the frog and scorpion, he lost his "frog" to his own nature. In contrast, in Bladerunner 2049, his character replicant (android) officer K, dies at the end of the film with his eyes open. Eyes in that film often symbolize true humanity, so we can say that he died as a real human being and the real hero.

Shoot I just realized the painting on the wall at 5:22 is water, resembling the river that the frog and scorpion in the story were meant to cross. Irene goes back and forth, but Driver never goes to her room besides in the beginning before Driver knew about Standard. Driver knew he was a scorpion and could never cross without taking out the frog.
