Drivers’ reaction times, awareness of hazards and ability to sustain attention can worsen, the drowsier the driver is.
To address that, select Kia models now offer Driver Attention Warning, or DAW.
Here’s how it works:
Driver Attention Warning is designed to monitor inattentive
driving practices and, when certain conditions occur, it gives
you a warning that it may be time for a break.
To turn on the DAW system, switch on the ignition and go to
User Settings in the Instrument cluster.
Then select Driver Assistance…
Select Driver Attention Warning…
And, if equipped, set DAW to normal or high sensitivity.
When DAW is activated, the DAW information will appear on
the LCD when you select Driving Assist mode.
When you select Normal Sensitivity, the Driver Attention
Warning system alerts you if it detects inattentive driving
practices.
A message - “Consider taking a break” - will appear on the
LCD display and a warning sound can be heard. This message
will not appear if the trip is less than ten minutes.
If you select High Sensitivity, DAW alerts you when it detects inattentive driving practices sooner than Normal mode.
When the system is off, Driver Attention Warning is deactivated.
However you set DAW, your Kia will maintain that setting when you cycle the ignition.
Also be aware that DAW will enter a “stand-by” mode if the forward camera does not detect the lanes and/or the driving speed remains under forty miles per hour.
Remember, Driver Attention Warning is not a substitute for safe driving and may not detect all instances of inattentive driving practices. Always drive safely and use caution.
So, if you see a coffee cup icon appear in the instrument cluster of your Kia, you’ll know that DAW is encouraging you to get off the road and take a break before continuing your drive.
