Drivers Betrayed! Tories Claim They Can Reverse ULEZ - Why Didn't They?

Thought I was done with ULEZ? Maybe not. It's been making waves yet again - the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in London. The Tories are claiming they can reverse ULEZ if they win the general election. But here's my question - if they could reverse it, why didn't they do it already?
In this video, I break down the recent election promises by the Conservative Party, including their vow to reverse ULEZ, stop Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs), and end blanket 20mph speed limits. As we edge closer to the election, it's crucial to understand what's genuine and what's just political spin.
I get into the history of ULEZ, the impacts on drivers, and why these last-minute promises seem more like a desperate attempt to win votes rather than a real commitment to change.
Join me as I unpack the Tories' claims, share my frustrations, and provide an honest perspective on the ongoing war on drivers. Don't miss out on this heated discussion!
Topics covered in this video:
- Tories' election promises and their impact on drivers
- The history and expansion of ULEZ in London
- Analysis of LTNs and 20mph speed limits
- Why the Conservatives didn't act on these issues sooner
- The potential future of motoring under Labour

The only promises they will keep are institutionalised racism (yes, you will be able to beat up foreigner's) Get rid of the NHS in favour of a US style expensive insurance scheme that 90% of Farage devotees can't afford and give massive handouts to private schools, like the £30kpa school Farage went to.

As far as I am aware, few years back a meeting of the World Economic Forum of which the UK is part, agreed that a big contributory cause of "Global Warming" is the Private Car. So the way forward on this topic was to reduce the ownership of private cars in the countries that support the WEF and that means worldwide. This is now a tricky situation for the politicians who have caused all the trouble they are giving honest citizens and as we all know, these people speak with forked tongues. We must also never forget it was Boris Johnson who first put so-called Low Traffic Neighbourhood schemes on the political agenda in 2014, and then supplied the funding for them in 2020 during the insane and pointless lockdowns. We must also not forget that the various Conservative transport ministers have endorsed Mr Khan's transport policies since he was elected in 2016, along with the Dept. of Transport.

My private estate road has been recently made a 20 zone. Not one person has driven at 20 since the signs went up. I’ve tried to, but it feels like I’m walking! It’s ridiculous and as you say, people shouldn’t be in the road to get run over anyway! If you’re doing 30 and a kid runs out, then you shouldn’t be doing 30 because you will have already spotted the kid well in advance and slowed down! Thats basic hazard perception and forward thinking. As for 20’s on a big main roads, well, that’s where it gets really ludicrous! I agree, past schools at certain times of the day and playgrounds etc, absolutely and the private housing estate roads like mine, fair enough. But hardly anyone takes any notice, as I say! No child has ever been run over on my street, or indeed on my entire estate and I’ve lived on it for over 40 years! For over four decades, it’s been a 30 zone and not one child has ever been run over! So why now 20 all of a sudden??? Mindless decision!

The other thing I also want to know, is Labour’s plans for Tax and MOT Exemption! I have the feeling they will put a stop to it, if they get in! My daily driver turns 40 in September, so should be tax exempt in April 25, but if the scum bags Labour get in, I’m so sure they will stop it, like they did in 97 with the rolling 25 years exemption as it was back then!!! I’m pig sick of paying so much fucking car tax and having to constantly drive on crap roads!!!

Two points come to mind. Since the change in the highway code, I'm finding many cyclists and pedestrians seem to be taking little or no notice of their surroundings in relation to other road users, apparently taking the attitude that they have priority and motorists have to take evasive action or stop regardless of the circumstances. And two, I doubt they will rescind the cash cow that is ULEZ, as in my own city, where the charge is "only" £9,I had to pay it two days running, and judging by the serial numbers of the two, I estimate they made over £65,000. In one 24 hour period. They aren't going to give that up.

We shouldn't forget that ULEZ was Mayor Boris Johnson's idea and that when he became PM, he threatened to withhold funds from the Greater London Authority unless Khan agreed to enlarge the scheme to cover the whole of the capital. I happen to think it's the only good idea Johnson ever had. But I would say that as I'm asthmatic and so is my grandson. We like clean air.

What about rural people? We have to visit cities as most services and many jobs are in cities. Lower income drivers, the retired, carers etc will be completely screwed if a version of ULEZ is rolled out nationwide. And one question to think about. Why was the national town speed limit originally set to 30MPH? There's an awful lot of research into speed limits and consequences. 20 or 30- research has shown it makes practically no difference. Even 5MPH limits result in the same injuries and deaths as at 30. Over 30MPH, sure things change.

In Wales following its implementation in September 2023 according to Esure Insurance said it had seen a 20% reduction in damage claims. The change to 20mph speed limits applied to restricted roads, which are usually in residential or built-up areas. You know what that may be a good time to ask for reduction in Insurance for motor vehicles. That is a possitive thing casue most people don't want to see people get hurt.

just as California, and many US districts abolish Jaywalking laws. The Dutch way is more effective at reducing deaths...Drivers are automatically liable for damages when they hit a pedestrian. Pedestrian walks out from behind a car? No excuse, the driver should anticipate and drive as if that will happen. In cities, pedestrian rights of way should always trump the right of drivers to go where they like as fast as they like.

Offering to reverse a policy, which 95% of daily journeys already comply with, suggests that it's a non issue in the first place for the vast majority. Let me put it another way, probably 95% of people are affected and this isn't an issue for them. Yes i know that the number of journeys isn't the same as the number of people but the data clearly shows that ULEZ affects a very small minority for which better solutions exist. They might as well start suggesting other things like making coal fired boilers legal in blocks of flats. Just no point but someone it there will be demanding this no doubt.

After listening to Liz Truss’ interview last month on the Triggernometry channel, I can now appreciate a little more about how many politicians and PMs cannot get most of their promises through. She openly stated that she had no power behind closed doors to get the things done that she promised to do. In short, the unelected departments and private groups blocked her from doing so. I am not a huge fan of Liz but she is correct in stating that the system needs to be completely overhauled. We should also be demanding full transparency. When we have politicians in a party that were voted in to do certain things and those politicians, behind closed doors, help to block those from occurring then they should be publicly named so that we can demand their resignation (for not representing us as they promised) and know not to vote for them again. Other groups and organisations should be named too. Until that occurs, they will continue to overrule whatever we vote for with impunity and without consequences.

The international markets saw that her tax cuts for the rich were unfunded. They saw her plans and realised the UK was a bad bet, collapsing the economy...Now I agree with you that uncontrolled capitalism is a terrible system that needs overhauling...But the answer to that is socialism not Liz Truss.

Agree with some of what you say. Big changes do need to be made but not so suddey and so punitively that ordinary families cannot afford to drive anywhere or have to sell a perfectly legal car that is non-compliant with ULEZ but otherwise completely legal. The cameras are very emotive by their insane numbers and their invasion of privacy. And ULEZ should be ONLY for positive reasons, not a taxation/profiteering scheme. I disagree with your view on 20mph on major routeways as uneccessary. Yes, 20mph is for safety near schools, but 20mph also reduces pollution and thereby contributes to reduced asthmatic attacks. A great example of traffic causing asthma is Rainworth in Nottinghamshire. This is a small former coalmining village on the main road out of Mansfield for traffic to the coast. This tiny village was until fairly recently the Asthma Capital of Europe. A Bypass fixed the problem, by moving the pollution away from the village. Pollution destroys people"s health and Khan is genuine in wanting a healthier London, although he has been so very heavy handed in his approach that public outcry is unsurprising.
