Thanks for this. quite nostalgic as I did that trip many years ago in RM51 and 52 Vulcan railcars. I came from Inangahua Camp and later the Junction. hard to visualize that there was a place called Rahui where there were 3 or 4 houses and a sawmill. The other was the Mackley where there was a Hydro camp when they felled all the trees for the Hydro transmission lines back in the 1950s.

Company is KiwiRail. Not certain what the locomotive is but the DX class (GE U26C) is usually used in that part of the country.

The Track Control Lights were for the Track on the left, not the one on the right which the train was on. The train also had a Proceed Light on for that track, beside that track. For safety reasons Track Control Lights are located on the outside and/or directly overhead on a Gantry in the event that there are more than 2 tracks in a side by side configuration. In addition, Track Operations Controllers are required to provide stop/go permission via lights/radio communications as well as written Train Movement prior to departure. Matters related to safety are very stringent, and include data on weather/track maintenance/staff movements and even reports of wildlife seen near/on the entire Trunk Line Sections. Both the Locomotive Assistant and the Locomotive Driver are required to verbally confirm Track Control Lights status, especially Track Control Lights at Railway Crossings, which can be seen flashing by the crew from special lens windows on the sides of the Crossing Lights. These lens windows show if the Warning Lights are actually on, and flashing, or not. Backup systems for any failure in the power/flasher/bulbs/barrier arm movement controllers are also in place, and that is why you see 2 flashing red lights, not one. All Train Operations are covered very extensively during ongoing Safety Operations Training, done for initially 1 year as a Locomotive Trainee, then 3 years as a Locomotive Assistant, before being able to sit for your very extensively checked and considered, Locomotive Driver's Licence. To date, no Locomotive Driver's Application has been turned down on any safety reason. There has been a small number turned down due to health problems that developed when working as the Locomotive Assistant. All Locomotive Assistants and Drivers are required to pass stringent Medical Assessments on a regular basis. The rocking motion of the train movement can cause the crew to feel sleepy, and it is the Locomotive Assistant's responsibility to press the Emergency Brake Over-ride Button every 30 seconds. If not done within that time, the horn automatically comes on to tell you that if you do not activate the over-ride, then the Emergency Braking will be automatically engaged within the next 5 seconds. The Locomotive Assistant actually has to lean forward from his seat to hit it. Or the Locomotive Driver has to cross the Cab to do it, and believe me, they do not like having to do that. Any such incident must be reported. The main reason that Locomotive Assistants leave the position and work doing something else, is because they are unable to counter the effects of this motion. Despite having other duties which helps to fight off this sleepyness feeling, some people just cannot fight it. I have provided this information so that you know and understand that under no circumstances whatsoever do anyone associated with any Train Operations ever take any risks, especially one that could ( and would ) lead to manslaughter charges if necessary. This information comes from my own time spent working for the NZR and then KiwiRail, in all of the above positions. I am now retired.
