Nicknamed the Boss 9 by true Mustang devotees, Mustang offered a 429 cid engine option in 1969. It was intended to compete with the Chrysler Hemi that was dominating the NASCAR circuit. Partnered with a single Holley 4 barrel carburetor it was rated at 350 horsepower but realistically developed over 500 hp. Air conditioning was not an option because there was no room for the a/c unit under the hood. The hood boasted the largest hood scoop ever offered on a Mustang and the next year was painted black. The car was available in 5 colors all with black interiors. This one is Royal Maroon. Only 859 Boss 429 car were built in 1969. This is an early edition with the NASCAR “S” code style engine that is numbers matching. The lone designation for the Boss 9 was a single decal behind the front wheel. Bill Elliot of NASCAR fame is a previous owner.

This car and the whole collection is really something to see. Truely one of the finest collections in the country and wonderful people that actually get the cars out and drive them as well as display them. Personally a 69 Boss 429 is hard to beat.

When I was a young boy my neighbor had a 1970 Mach 1 Red over Black. I loved watching him idle down the street with that loping Cam & that killer exhaust note.

Yea, so I was a Ford mechanic back in the day, and worked on the Boss 429's on occasion. My brother had a boat with a "Boss 9 and I can tell you first hand the cam in the car in this video is not an OEM camshaft. Sounds good though. By the way, the Boss 4's had a real problem with rocker arm shafts.

Always wished Ford would have built these to run on the street at their full potential rather than choke them with crappy cam, small carb & intake, exhaust manifolds.
@Epik-hm8ws
@Epik-hm8ws 3 жыл бұрын
I politely disagree. Exhaust manifolds were always crappy on all cars. All other performance engines with hot cam and big carb weren‘t that reliable. Bad cold start and street/idling manners. Would overheat in traffic etc. The step from the basically race spec 427 in passenger cars to 429 had a lot of pros for non car people. They could actually enjoy the car all year long without worry. Car people who can handle those downsides can just swap headers, cam and carb and have a beast of an engine to enjoy. The 429 semihemi is a bad example because it was such an expensive option. But imagine a lot more detuned performance engines with forged steel crank, connecting rods, high flow heads and high rpm valvetrain which are just hindered by exhaust manifolds, cam and carb. A lot more people would have bought it because they wouldn‘t have to be afraid of it being a hassle in day to day life and car people who will eventually put performance parts on it anyway would have a great basis of an engine.

@@Epik-hm8ws well Ford could have provided a decent cast iron exh manifold on a hi po engine much like they did with the early hi po 390, 406 and 427 engines. You can also provide a decent cam and carb as well thats not too wild. These Boss engines were just too tame from the factory. I just disagree with Ford putting a supposedly hi po street engine out there that is so civilized it doesnt perform. Just look at what Chevy did with their engines like L76, L79, L72, L78. I have an L78 Nova and that motor is a beast from the factory. You could get two “Mild” versions of the 396 if you just wanted to be “seen”.
@Epik-hm8ws
@Epik-hm8ws 3 жыл бұрын
@Kim Morrison You unintentionally proved my point here. If you go on roadtests.tripod.com you can see all recorded 1/4 mile times from back when those car were new. No super tunes or modern tires. The fastest L78 Nova (megacool car you have, love solid lifter big block chevys) was a 3 speed 3.55 with a 13.87@105.14mph. The more comparable bodystyle camaros fastest time was a 14.09@99mph (4 speed 3.55). Good times but the like you said tame Boss 429 put down a 13.34@107mph with 4 Speed and 3.91. All that performance with a all day usable cold start friendly engine which everybody could use daily and find more buyers because of that (yes the boss 429 was to expensive for high sale numbers) Now imagine yourself back then trying to improve your time stuffing in a hotter solid lifter cam, intake, bigger carb etc. It gets better performance with those parts and still be as usable as a L78/solid lifter all forged steel big block street engine from the factory.

I don't know the history BUT Ford should have given the designers of the 1969 mustangs a hugh bonus. Maybe they did? If so, well deserved. I never cared for the GTOs, Firebirds, Camaros, etc. and I love the 1969 Mustang Mach I and, also, the 1969 AMC AMX. People smile when I express my love for the 1969 Mustang Mach I BUT they look at me oddly when I also state my love for the 1969 AMC AMX. Some say they don't even remember the AMX but ALL remember the Mach I.

Driving it really ❓ If you don't drive it like McQueen you're not driving it . Wimp driving and poor shifting. I had a 69 1/2 Mach 1 Super Cobra jet fully loaded. If I ran in against this driver he'd leave it in the garage. I got everything out of my car that it was capable of . The chin piece really ❓ No traction bars ❓ You don't have any clue until you know the weaknesses of a big block Mustang.Steve knew and had a small block to do the real driving. I made my car prove itself to the point of me dying. I lifted it full air at 115 and put it into a spin at 95 . The anchor up front almost killed me. The only Boss worth seriously driving is the Boss 302 😎

Nice car but please stop with the 500 hp bs. These engines stock never made that. The main problem was the mild cam. And even with a better cam you are then going to be limited with the cast manifolds and stock exhaust. I've seen them run on the strip and they could barely get in the 12's stock.
