Driving an Airboat to Kmart (almost hit a semi truck)

Testing out various wheel arrangements on my amphibious mini-airboat. We used the wide-open parking lot at the local abandoned K-mart. Well, it was mostly open, I did almost run into a semi truck... oops! It seems like I might have a viable setup for wheels on this thing if I use three pivoting caster wheels!

I think your best bet for a steerable system is to not use the rudder at all. If you take two kid sized bike wheels and mount them on either side of the rear with their original brakes and attach those cables to a simple pivoting foot bar (or your current control lever) it can independently brake each wheel pulling you around in that direction with a limited rotation caster front. This is how older US Navy aircraft like the A-4 Skyhawk worked. You would have to rev up your engine and then hit one of the rear wheel breaks to get it to start turning that direction and the caster would turn to align and hopefully not take you off the side of the carrier. It would be pretty easy to make it detachable if you had two front forks and the frame head tub with a pin through the fork and head tube to lock them forward and hold them in. The front wheel could be another kid sized bike setup sticking out from the prow a bit to climb obstacles. People junk kids bikes all the time in my experience.

I would have lost the all-casters bet as well. Very cool.

I just thought of a solution that may work far better than what you have, plus it would provide more direct control. This would be good for when you have side hills that would "suck " you down the hill. You could connect the rudder to castering wheels at the back. If you take a look at a tail wheel airplane, you will see exactly what I mean. On a plane the rudder cables attach to a bracket at the bottom of the rudder. That bracket is also attached to the castering tail wheel. If you had this arrangement, then you should probably go with the non-steerable wheel in front.

Steering the front wheel linkage with your feet, I've seen this application used to steer ice boats and think it would work well.

Those inflatables on the back are good, but I still think you need a steerable front. If you use a bicycle front end, you should be able to use its little brake to slow you down on cornering. Toilet paper zombies would never forgive you , if you took out one of their supply trucks in queue. Those things are loaded with toilet paper, and probably some kind of canned gruel; bovine brains and beans!? Who knows. I'm not a marine biologist or anything. Good luck with the project.

@@saveitforparts Something similar to this cargo bike: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iaqcoad2vdLKnWw.html There's a drawing of steering rack at 2:25. Maybe you could just latch the steering rod to your existing steering lever. The front part could be clamped on with clamps like they use for small fire extinguisher bottles in cars or boats. www.westechrigging.com/fire-ext-vbrkt-466400.html Metal retention strap, that's the name of the bugger.

Front wheel steering certainly. I have ridden, driven a few three wheelers and one front and two rear is far best. Easy to work too, simple linkage. Use your feet to steer !

One possible solution is to steer it like a tractor. With the breaks. A break on either side in the rear would allow you to stop and steer... Just a thought. Keep up the killer work. Cheers-

I am new to your channel and I have not seen the conclusion to this thing oma jig yet but just seeing how it all worked with what you tried, (I know next to nothing about boating lol) I would be tempted to but brakes on the rear wheels like tractors brakes work because that would give you the steering you need from what I can see and maybe you could invent some sort of brake system like on bicycles but use other wheels or something to put resistance to the wheels you want to steer/brake with...

Is it possible to connect the rudder to the rear wheels and use them as steering wheels like on the back of a forklift?

I think two rudder fins would be better on land because when air flows around them they create certain opposite forces that help stabilize the currents that provide movement. Adjust the trim of both to tune the control.

I think I would have the rudder fixed straight for land use and have two wheels in the front that I could steer. That way even if you let off the gas or kill the engine, you would still have steering control. And put some brakes on the beast. Can have all the bells and whistled, but if you can't stop it, then what good is the rest? No good if you end up in the hospital or worse. And if you had run into that semi, I am pretty sure that there is no insurance on that contraption!

Maybe if you used a tie rod on your rear wheels and have them work together not separately it would give more control ! Where abouts in Minnesota are you ? I’m north of the cities ! Looks like your down in St. Paul off of 35E . I’m thinking about a car running on an airplane engine pusher ! A small car rear wheel drive like a metro just something really small ! I have a WW2 target drone engine and propeller !
