I've been working on adding wheels to my miniature airboat, with the goal of having an amphibious vehicle for land or water. This is part one of the building and testing process, an upcoming video will have more testing!

The steering caster wheel needs to be the back not the front one. Front has to be fixed since the actual steering is done by the rudder. You don't want the boat to go sideways but change direction :)

All the weight is at the back, so if I just had one wheel back there it would probably roll over.

I don't know why, but I just had this thought and decided to google it. Thank you sir for doing this, made my day

somehow i keep thinking you could make a hovercraft out of it with some bolt on skirts....

Put two retractable caster wheels ON THE BACK of the boat as that steers direction. Two fixed wheels at the front corners helps over obstacles. Also surround the fan with a cover on the perimeter frame to focus the air more efficiently. Maybe change to TWO air rudders, SMALLER for stronger control. Study the physics.

Fixed wheels up front pivot on the rear. Your boat wants to steer from the rear

How bout individual brakes on each back wheel? Stop one side at a time to turn. Might work with the caster up front. Pretty in-depth to build though.

That would make it harder to swap the wheels on and off, but worth looking into.

You may what to make your stering router on the back larger and cover it with light weight fiber glass so it's smooth so the wind doesn't have so much drag.

First thought.... put a castor wheel on the trailer jack, it’s already secured to the trailer and it has 2 of 3 wheels already.... later my thoughts turned to turning the boat around on the trailer to pivot on the rear like my old walker lawn mower

point the fans more down, get more power, and use on the salt lake

I say use some Gator Glide and lose the wheels all together.

You've got good process there. I was thinking front castor wheel as well, but I thought that would be too imprecise for what you need it for. I also had the cable steering boat motor systems in mind. It would probably have to be a two sided system rather than one cable, arm control. The latter might not have enough strength . RC would be too much hassle for a watercraft and clutter, like you said, mythbusters had a lot of trouble tuning those things in. Simple hydraulic system with a manual pump operated by your feet maybe. You could do a video visiting your local junkyard/car wrecker, look around see if you spot something. Trucks might have heavy cable mechanisms you could get for two bucks. For someone not living in your country, videos where you visit stores and car wreckers are very interesting.

I've been thinking of a cable system like I have for the rudder, but running forward to a wheel. I just haven't figured out a good way to do it yet that's strong, lightweight, and easy to attach and detach as needed.

@@saveitforparts It all depends on what you got at hand or can get for nothing. I would say that taking a small children's bike and cutting of the front section flush at the steering post would give you something you could clip on or off. You'd need one side of the handle bar to steer it, other side gets cut off. Then you got something strong with bearings and pump up tyre, even if it's "Pink Unicorn" brand. Pushing and pulling that half of handle bar could be a detachable rod, moving to front and back to give you more turning angle. If you can get one of those house window closers, the wind up ones. They are very sturdy with cast iron case, solid chain and gears. If you put that on, to push and pull the handle bar, you could rip out its little handle and shove in a steering wheel rod. Commercial/industrial window closers, for windows high up have very solid, long turn cables encased in aluminium pipes, that could do away with steering rods. That's only if you have abandoned schools or commercial buildings around, to rip it out from.

Putting a larger motor in it wouldn't be too hard or expensive, that'd be a cool video!
@saveitforparts4 жыл бұрын
This motor is plenty powerful when it gets up to full RPMs, I don't run it on full throttle for long since it gets hard to control and it burns gas like crazy. I'll do some more speed tests in the summer when there's water to run it on!

Heyo, Have you considered adding a directional control rod and tie rod to the rear swivels? So you are not relying on air to control direction but also have some steer-ability with the rear tires using the same controls you have for the rudder?
@saveitforparts4 жыл бұрын
Originally I was going to have the front wheel/swivel steerable with cables but it's been a real puzzler for how to run that without it getting even more cumbersome than this already is. I might redesign everything again after testing this on a larger parking lot.

If you are going to be driving this over sand and marshy shores there will be much more resistance than pavement has. I don't remember if you said how heavy the boat is but technically you calculate the amount of surface area you would need and test how much area the tires you would give you at different pressures by loading them up. You might also consider doubling or tripling those wheels up if you want to be able to easily get over soft swampy beaches with sticks and things the boat has to drive over. Also what about still using fixed back wheels maybe doubled up depending on the weight distribution of the craft but like on a big round lazy susan type thing and you could spin that to turn? It would be bigger than I think you want but feel like it might have to be made out of metal to get the leverage to steer the wheels and have the same size and strength to weight ratio that is needed.
