Most cab drivers take a coffee or newspaper to work with them, but Hardy Hudson brings a knife. This seems normal when you're a cab driver in a danger zone like Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
The college graduate turned taxi driver took REV on a wild ride in one of the world's most violent cities, where he battles for a living with 5000 other registered and unregistered taxi drivers, all while enjoying the buzz of the betel nut.

I think you chose the perfect person to be your guide. This is quite realistic of how things operate in the city through the eyes of one of our cab drivers. He was friendly and hospitable. Made me chuckle at some parts realising how typical some things are of PNG :)

Enjoyed watching this. What an honest guy. Gave all accurate information about port Moresby city ONLY. Other provinces around PNG would have their own reviews which would be mostly positive. Port Moresby is not as dangerous as it was described, crimes happened but mostly at a petty level. That's a smile of someone who is not constantly working in a very dangerous environment.

Sliding door moment ... 1983 ... my Dad got the family together, our choice RAAF posting to PNG or USA for four years. As an 11 year old I chose PNG, living in an enclosure and having two Alsatians, sounded good to me. My Mum, older brother, and sister, chose USA, so that is where we went. They thrived living in USA, I hated it, still wish we had gone to PNG.

Hardy is a hard working friend, i know him very well and we living together at the same street. Your safety in Port Moresby is quite complex, meaning it's the way how you see yourself when you are in the country. Many foreigners coming in to PNG thinks it's a very risky place and you choose to travel with escorts/body guards and avoid certain hotspots. The locals here are very friendly, if you walk around with locals and interact with them, supporting the local informal economy, they will really appreciate you and even protect you if you feel unsafe. You have never experience the kind of generosity they will offer. Its the way how you act towards locals. If you are in the country, be simple and enjoy the place.
@kap849
@kap849 2 жыл бұрын
This is what I always say. It boils down to how/if you interact with locals. It will cost you some cash people in these kind of cultures giving a local even £2 could go a long way in "building" a friendship and if you are lucky, that friendship will yield a lot, including protection. One's the local says "he's with me", boi ain't nobody gonna touch you. Of course, it could go a bad way, these things are 50/50.

I spent 3 weeks in PNG few years ago. Went to a wedding in the Highlands. We flew into Port Moresby and then flew to Mt Hagen and then drove few hours to a small town and then few more hours to the village. We had 2 cars full of people with us just for protection, It was all family but they went with us everywhere we went. It just felt unsafe to go to shops or ATM etc. They made us feel very welcome and not scared but there was always this tension in the air that anything bad can happen anytime. On the way back to Australia, we spent a night in the capital and went to a restaurant right opposite the hotel. The hotel had 4 armed guards at the main gate and one of them walked with us to the restaurant that was only 1 minute walk. The restaurant door was locked and there was an armed guard that opened it. On the way back from the restaurant , we got approached by 2 men and by the time the hotel security saw it and came to walk us back to the hotel, they were already demanding money etc. I gave them the bag of food that was left over from the dinner and they left us alone after they saw the security guys coming over. Overall, I wouldn't recommend going there as a tourist unless you have proper protection.

@@seanbenoza5355 it's the urban areas in the highlands that have unsafe spots.. most areas are safe though, similar to the coast. Hell, I feel safer in Goroka than Lae or Madang

Deserves a kind title than the negative depiction of the country mate. If it was dangerous, your ass wouldn't have had the chance to see another day to upload this content. C'mon! Thumbs up to the brother though.

Yo, I’m a white guy and a foreigner, could I serve in PNG’s defense force? Your army is one of the best in the Pacific, if I learn tactics from you I could stand to accomplish much for PNG.

It is just as same as any other countries in the world. We all have good and bad people. You just have to be careful when moving around and with a tour guide.

@@christopheralbert9353 "It is just as same as any other countries in the world" - No, it's not. E.g. Japan and Honduras are NOT the same. They are as different as Mercury and Venus. In fact, every SINGLE country in the world is unlike any other.
