What it's like driving inside a dust storm plus out of this world tornadic supercell, weird clouds and more.
On May 17th, 2021 a discrete tornadic storm erupted near Lubbock Texas. Dusty orange, dry conditions at sunset and weird cloud formations presented a spectacular atmosphere of alien color more like a scene from Jupiter than Earth.

STORM ACCOUNT:
Through the early evening, a low precipitation supercell with a twisted updraft slowly grew stronger. As its rotation intensified the storm began inhaling and coughing up copious amounts of orange dust. Strong winds circulating around the storm’s base veiled a developing tornado. In order to see the tornado, we attempted to punch through the dust storm hoping for a clear view on the other side. After observing a funnel cloud fail to touch down, a hovering mothership UFO turned its cross heirs toward Lubbock. Rather than terrorizing the town folk, It dazzled them with an unforgettable show of creepy clouds and color. Later that evening the storm produced incredible red sprites. I will highlight this special event in the next video.

In Arizona, the dust storms are probably one of the most entertaining to watch come to your house. Since I live in the valley it almost always covers both sides in a V shape and then closes in. The coolest dust storm I've seen, I was flying from Albuquerque to SLC, my connecting flight was in Phoenix. As the ABQ - PHX flight was landing, I had window seat with a great view of an approaching haboob. When I was in the terminal waiting for my SLC flight to depart, we had a wide view of the approaching storm as it slowly took over the runways and airport. We were delayed, but it was worth it to see that.

Lived much of my life in (dust stormy) Lubbock. In 1970 the F5 tornado, (before the EF scale) was super devastating. This twister had a mesocyclone that came right over my house! It was the blackest cloud I've ever seen! There were three funnels about 3 blocks down on MY street! Getting a little scary. Then a BEAUTIFUL ORANGE mammatus anvil passed by. Wow! What a twister day 😳

When I was growing up, tornado footage was so rare and precious that the phenomenon felt almost mythical. It wasn't until the advent of _Tornado Video Classics_ that I comprehended the scope of historical tornado documentation, though it proved that footage was uncommon. By the 2000s, tornado footage was routine, and nowadays one almost expects to have fresh footage available every day. Pecos Hank is the one doing the same thing for sprites and similar stratospheric phenomena. I learned about sprites in a documentary called _Wonders of Weather: Lightning_ (ca. 1996). It took _20 years_ for anything as substantial on the topic to surface, and the totality of that new information has been provided by Pecos Hank himself. Maybe in a decade, sprites will be everyday sightings the way tornadoes seem to have reached critical mass today.

Cannot wait for the second part Hank! The weather in Germany has been super interesting in the past months. I had the chance to see very interesting cloud formations for the first time, including mammatus clouds here in Berlin. It was mesmerizing! (I knew what these clouds were, thanks to you!) Of course the scale of the storms and hail in Europe is pretty concerning, since it's very unusual. Czech Republic unfortunately faced an F4 rated tornado recently. On one hand I'm excited to experience storms, and possibly a tornado, from a safe distance (fingers crossed). On the other hand, I'm nervous since I am not sure on what to expect in the future. For the time being I'm just appreciating the mother nature.

It's literally my dream job, how could I have a chance at doing what you do

Hank teaches me to be more alive and appreciative. He's a talented musical and visual artist, a natural teacher with humor and a powerful sense of wonder, a lover of wildlife, and one hell of a storm chaser. I used to get annoyed by how much he likes cereal but I got over that.
