Over the last couple decades, I’ve found myself trying to outrun some fast tornadoes. But what exactly is considered a fast tornado? And how fast can tornadoes move? The majority of tornadoes I encounter track roughly 25-30 mph. For me, anything slower than that, I consider slow and anything faster than 39 mph, I consider a fast tornado. But tornadoes can move much faster than that. Ride along with this scientific mission to uncover how the fastest tornado yet documented was discovered and how we calculated its ground speed.

That would certainly be a problem unless you have a very fast car. But many rope tornados/subvorties do this, however. Most larger tornadoes hardly go that high, but the Tri-State Tornado, a huge F5 going 73 mph, to me, is much scarier.

Great footage, as always. I was rather confused at first, though, closed captions kept replacing "tornado" with "Burrito". Especially since I've experienced a few fast moving burritos, and at least one I couldn't outrun. Very dangerous, those.

@@kabo0m I thought it was storm chaser slang e.g. rope, stovepipe, wedge. In my defense, it kinda looked like one, and you could totally flop a burrito around on a table as a talking aid to demonstrate the behavior of a tornado. Especially if there's debris flying out the bottom. Extra credit for making slurping noises with a soft drink at the same time.

@davidroyer5049 Definitely science if you have to resort to 'math death' to do the proper calculations for several of the things that Hank and his group do. In fact that's why I especially like Hank. Sure I'm absolutely Blown Away by (no pun intended) by the hideous power and frightening beauty of tornadoes (and have been for 40 years) but after a while as a scientist (chemist) I began to want to understand some of the more esoteric and complicated facets of the incredible phenomenon we call tornadoes. A lot has been learned in the last 30 years mostly thanks to the efforts of certain more diligent Storm Chasers.

My grandmother survived the tri-state tornado of 1925. She was 10 and talked about it the rest of her life. They had NO warning. She said the common person didn’t know what a tornado was. She also remembers watching her town, Murphysboro, IL burn throughout the night. Those horrific images were always sharp in her brain to the point that even though she is gone now, I can tell her stories.

Man the science behind this is amazing. 94.6 mph. Incredible. Also - what the Pilger EF4 did was to kind of prepare for becoming a satellite of the East Pilger EF4, and once that one decided to become obsolete, it just went "Nah, there's another tornado developing to the east, let me just scoot over there so I can become a satellite for that one."
@goodguyguan3412
@goodguyguan3412 10 күн бұрын
Satellites orbit and inevitably get consumed by the anchor rotation because they don't have the forward momentum or power to break free while they're also losing energy to the anchor, this one didn't orbit, mostly stayed on path, and eventually roped itself out after being near two other tornado paths. The circulation of the 90mph was way stronger than the other two inside the mesocyclone to the point it had to reach the end of its cycle JUST to get slingshot like that. Which is prob why they proposed it as the fastest

My ex-wifes mother was 9, and in grade school in Murphysboro on the day that storm hit. She survived, and as a kid would, climbed out of the rubble of her school and just stood there a minute trying to understand what had just happened to her world. She was standing on wood and bricks when she heard painful cries. Underneath the rubble and her feet was the head of her teacher! Who was in additional pain from being stood upon. Thankfully she was dug out, and as I remember, survived. Pretty beat up though.

An honorable mention, and possibly the actual record holder, would be a very obscure F4 tornado that touched down in Germany in July of 1891. It was said that the tornado covered a distance of 20km (just under 12.5 miles) in only FOUR MINUTES, making the *average* speed of the tornado nearly 190mph. At full song, this thing was probably hitting somewhere in the ballpark of 240mph, and it still completely destroyed the town of Anrath on its way.

The most "extreme" tornado in recorded history was the Tri-State Tornado, which spread through parts of Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana on March 18, 1925. It is considered an F5 on the Fujita Scale, even though tornadoes were not ranked on any scale at the time. What a great video! So fascinating and educational at the same time. Nice job! As a Nebraskan, living in tornado alley can be quite terrifying when strong storms roll through. I have thankfully only seen funnel clouds up close and not any fully developed tornados. In the Midwest we have a primal fear of tornados and even have tornado related nightmares. Often seeing dozens of tornados surrounding us in these hellscape nightmares. I used to think I was the only one who had such dreams but later learned, as an adult, that they are quite common.

My uncle lives in a good chunk of property somewhere between El Reno and Moore. In the last 20 years that man has lost his home 7-8 times. He has military insurance, so they just keep rebuilding it, in the same spot. In fact he lost his home in 2011 and as they were finishing the rebuild, he lost it again in the El Reno tornado. I feel like maybe after rebuilding once or twice, I would move. I think my uncle really wants to go in a tornado. I mean, why else stay? @DEFKNIGHT
@DEFKNIGHT 3 жыл бұрын
@@alanwayne7643 Yeah but that subvortices was also the size of an F3 tornado. What's worse it wasn't the only one. The main wedge was so strong that it just kept ramping them up one right after the other. The fact that that whole circulation including those giant subvortices around the wedge Was the Tornado itself is mind boggling. 2 3/4 miles wide moving over 60 mph!!! That's insane!

What excellent work by a dedicated consortium of citizen scientists and academic scientists! If anyone ever accuses storm chasers of simply being thrill seekers, I will send them to this impressive video to straighten them out. Well done, Hank!

Pecos Hank, I hope you read this! Your my favorite chaser by far! So would you please break down the "parts" of the tornado in your videos? Show us what the wall cloud is. The mesocyclone, super cell, inflow jet, ect!! Explain what we are seeing for those of us not trained in this field. That would be awesome!! Love ya from Ohio. And please be safe chasing!!❤❤❤❤💯

@@courtnayhayhayyy Tim and Paul Samaras and Carl Young all died in the El Reno tornado, yes. They were known for being incredibly experienced, and El Reno currently holds the record for biggest tornado ever recorded, with wind speeds over 300mph. They are the only chasers to have died actually by tornado, and if you're on tornado youtube for long, every time they're mentioned there's usually folks in the comments praising their work and mourning them. We know roughly what happened mostly from Robinson and the fact that the Samaras' video camera was recovered and some footage was able to be analyzed - we know that they thought they could outrun it east, not realizing that they were already in the tornado itself - and Skip has a good video on his channel analyzing what happened. (It's his Safety Lessons from El Reno video, about an hour and twenty minutes long.) They died doing what they loved best, and the chaser community honours them for it, and learned a lot from their lives and their deaths.
