Driving On I-5 South In 1987 (Marysville, Everett)

Back in 1987, The Washington State Department of Transportation drove south on I-5 and recorded video to document the highway. This was part of a project that photographed/videotaped the states highways every couple of years. This video now resides at The Washington State Archives who were kind enough to share it.

My goodness, this whole area has changed dramatically since then. Probably one of the fastest growing areas in the whole USA, not just Washington state.

Weird seeing nothing but trees for the first 8 miles. No Smokey Point shopping center, no casino, no Home Depot, no Walmart, no Cabela's, no Outlet Mall.

Fastest growing? 😂. There's nothing there other than what the natives have built on the west side over the last 20 odd years, and as of recently the Amazon facility and the Tesla hub on the north end. State Ave has looked the same since I was a kid 40 years ago

So neat seeing this...back before they cleared out all the trees between 116th and 88th where the Outlet Mall and Tulalip Casino are now. I remember when it still looked like this, I even remember that small weigh station on the side of the freeway at 7:32 (I believe that's roughly where the 88th street exit is now). Hopefully you have some videos of State Ave. in Marysville and Smokey Point Blvd. in Arlington.

At about 7:02 from Milepost 201 south to about 200.48 or so now exists the 88th Street interchange built in 1995-'96. I was a WSDOT surveyor & inspector on that project (Contract No. 4655) and have some good memories from back then, including lots of overtime from working the temporary scale shack on the northbound side. Simpler times back then, for sure :)

Do you have SR-531 (172nd St.) in Smokey Point? It would be a trip to see that back in the 80s.

No, but I will make a note in case the Washington State Archives is able to send another batch. Looks like the WSDOT only began filming that route in the early 90's. Before that it was not an official highway.
